Aura Satellite Mission: Oxford/RAL Spring School in Quantitative Earth Observation

The four instruments on Aura are providing new and exciting measurements of stratospheric and tropospheric ozone, species that contribute to ozone production and loss, and long-lived gases such as nitrous oxide and methane that provide information about atmospheric transport. These discussions of atmospheric chemistry will start with the basic principles of ozone production and loss. Aura data will be used where possible to illustrate the pertinent atmospheric processes. Three-dimensional model simulations will be used both to illustrate present capabilities in constituent modeling and to demonstrate how observations are used to evaluate and improve models and our ability to predict future ozone evolution.

High-Temperature Knitted Spring Tubes Improved for Structural Seal Applications

To meet the needs of current and future space vehicles, the NASA Glenn Research Center is developing advanced control surface seals. These seals are used to fill the gaps surrounding actuated structures, such as rudders and body flaps, to shield underlying lower temperature structures, such as mechanical actuators, from the hot gases encountered during atmospheric reentry. During previous testing, the current baseline seal design, which is used on the space shuttle as a thermal barrier and was selected as the rudder-fin seal on the X-38 crew return vehicle, exhibited significant permanent set following compression at 1900 F (see the following photograph). Decreased resiliency (springback) could prevent the seal from contacting both of the opposing sealing surfaces and allow the ingestion of damaging hot gases during reentry, which could have detrimental effects on vehicle subsystems.

Forty-Year-Old Foam Springs Back With New Benefits

The most recognized and widely used NASA spinoff is at it again. Temper foam, whose origins date back to 1966 when it was developed to absorb shock and, thus, offer improved protection and comfort in NASA s airplane seats, has paid its dividends to Earth repeatedly, and in many different ways. It has padded the helmets of the Dallas Cowboys throughout the 1970s and 1980s, protected bedridden patients from bedsores, and comforted the feet of thousands wearing stylish shoes that incorporate the cushioning material in their insoles. Four decades later, the world has come to realize that there are no bounds to temper foam s benefits. Though the rights to the technology have been shared amongst various manufacturers, the original product maker is still going strong, pushing temper foam into new arenas, including automotives, amusement parks, prosthetics, and modern art.

Winter and Spring Thaw as Observed with Imaging Radar at BOREAS

In the boreal forest region and for coniferous forest species, the summer frost free period bounds the growing season length (Walter et Breckle 1993). For both coniferous and deciduous trees, their grown potential is further limited by their mineral and water uptake.

ET Toxic Metals Replacement Review SEA Spring Face to Face

The information contained in the presentation covers development work carried out under SDS projects. The intent of the effort is to find chrome(VI) free alternates to our current chromated processing solutions. The information presented reports progress in work aimed to replace our alkaline cleaner (Turco 4215), conversion coat (Iridite 14-2) and chrome (VI) compounds used in LOx tank hydrostatic proof test solution. To date we have found candidates for use in the proof test solution and alkaline cleaner. These candidates are in the final stages of testing. Lab data is reported in the presentation.

Electrostatic spring softening in redundant degree of freedom resonators

The present invention discloses an isolated electrostatic biased resonator gyroscope. The gyroscope includes an isolated resonator having a first and a second differential vibration mode, a baseplate supporting the isolated resonator, a plurality of excitation affixed to the baseplate for exciting the first differential vibration mode, a plurality of sensing electrodes affixed to the baseplate for sensing movement of the gyroscope through the second differential vibration mode and a plurality of bias electrodes affixed to the baseplate for trimming isolation of the resonator and substantially minimizing frequency split between the first and second differential vibration modes. Typically, the isolated resonator comprises a proof mass and a counterbalancing plate with the bias electrodes disposed on the baseplate below.

Isotope Variations in Terrestrial Carbonates and Thermal Springs as Biomarkers: Analogs for Martian Processes

Stable isotope measurements of carbonate minerals contained within ALH84001 [1] suggest that fluids were present at 3.9 Gy on Mars [2, 3, 4, 5]. Both oxygen and carbon isotopes provide independent means of deciphering paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of carbonate mineral precipitation. In terrestrial carbonate rocks oxygen isotopes not only indicate the paleotemperature of the precipitating fluid, but also provide clues to environmental conditions that affected the fluid chemistry. Carbon isotopes, on the other hand, can indicate the presence or absence of organic compounds during precipitation (i.e. biogenically vs. thermogenically-generated methane), thus serving as a potential biomarker. We have undertaken a study of micro scale stable isotope variations measured in some terrestrial carbonates and the influence of organic compounds associated with the formation of these carbonates. Preliminary results indicate that isotope variations occur within narrow and discrete intervals, providing clues to paleoenvironmental conditions that include both biological and non-biological activity. These results carry implications for deciphering Martian isotope data and therefore potential biological prospecting on the planet Mars. Recently, Fourier Transform Spectrometer observations have detected methane occurring in the Martian atmosphere [6] that could be attributed to a possible biogenic source. Indeed, Mars Express has detected the presence of methane in the Martian atmosphere [7], with evidence indicating that methane abundances are greatest above those basins with high water concentrations.
