SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria User Manual (V.5.0)

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process %1Cows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number (Re < 1) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newtons method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton-Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h-adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Arias more advanced capabilities.

Minimum switching network for generating the weight of a binary vector

Vector is divided into three variable sections, and each section is processed by unary-to-binary decoder or adder. Resulting network performs on iterative collection process; all outputs of same kind are collected in same manner. In combination with simple comparator gates, weighting network can also be used as majority network.

Applications of remote sensing in public health.

Current research concerning the determination of the habitat of mosquito vectors of disease is discussed. It is shown how advanced interpretative processes have enabled recognition of the breeding areas of salt marsh mosquitoes and the breeding sites of the mosquito responsible for the transmission of St. Louis strain of encephalitis and of human filariasis. In addition, remote sensing data have also been useful in the study of the habitat of endemic strains of Venezuelan encephalitis virus in Florida. The beginning of the application of remote sensing to such public health aspects as air, water, and urban degradation is noted.

Remanent magnetization and structural effects due to shock in natural and man-made iron-nickel alloys

Explosive shock or meteorite impact are significant remagnetization processes. The mechanisms of remagnetization associated with the dynamic processes depend on the peak shock pressure, the nature of the shocked materials, and the behavior of the shock in the material. Magnetic measurements can be used to classify products formed during a shock process, and magnetic measurements can be used to investigate the process itself because of the special characteristics of the remanent magnetization vectors. The magnetic coercive force increases more rapidly in quenched and annealed iron-nickel alloys as nickel is added than it does in the alloys which have been shocked.

Precision geodesy using the Mark-III very-long-baseline interferometer system

Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) has been used to make precise measurements of the vector separation between widely separated antennas. The system for acquiring and processing VLBI data known as Mark-III is described. Tests of the system show it to have millimeter-level accuracy on short baselines; measurements of baselines longer than a few hundred kilometers suggest that accuracy is limited by the uncertainty in the calibration of tropospheric path delay to the level of a few centimeters. VLBI experiments conducted between 1976 and 1983 have demonstrated the stability of the North American plate by showing that there is no change in the distance between eastern California and Massachusetts at the level of a few millimeters per year or greater. Experiments made from 1980 to 1984 indicate that the distance from Massachusetts to Sweden is increasing by 1.7 + or - 1 cm/year where the quoted standard deviation includes the estimated effects of systematic errors.

Cloud-drift wind estimates during PGGE

Cloud drift winds constitute an important component of the First Global Atmospheric Research Program Experiment data base. Data was generated by far different centers, using somewhat different procedures. Image data transformation to wind vectors is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the differences between the processing techniques employed in each system. The use of cloud drift data by global data assimulation systems is reviewed, including quality control and relative weighting.
