Development of a two channel linear discriminant function for detecting and identifying surface water using ERTS-1 data

A method for detecting surface water using ERTS-1 multispectral scanner digital data is described. The several computer programs for processing multispectral data are described, along with the manner in which these programs were used. The use of the LARSAA program to test and demonstrate the discriminant function is explained. The discriminant function itself was later implemented in an operational program which performs only those specific operations necessary to test each data point for an indication of surface water in the scene. Several possible sources of difficulty in the use of the function are identified, and suggestions are made for avoiding or correcting those difficulties.

The use of Landsat-3 thermal data to help differentiate land covers

Landsat-3 Multispectral Scanner Subsystem (MSS) digital data of the Baltimore, Maryland area gathered on May 24, 1978, are examined to show the usefulness of thermal data in providing better discrimination between agricultural and residential areas, certain types of urban/industrial areas and water, cloud shadows and water, and bare-extractive areas and bright urban cover types. High altitude aircraft imagery taken on May 3, 1978, provides ground truth and training site verification. Two classifications are made for each training site: the initial one using bands 4, 5, and 7 and a second in which the thermal data are included with the visible and near infrared data. This permits a direct comparison of areas spectrally similar with and without the inclusion of the thermal data. Commission errors determined from selected subsets of the data show reductions of 95% for the urban/industrial versus water themes, 84% for the residential versus agriculture themes, 64.0% for the bare-extractive versus bright urban themes, and 24% for the cloud shadow versus water themes when the thermal data are included in the signature.

Digital optical tape: Technology and standardization issues

During the coming years, digital data storage technologies will continue an aggressive growth to satisfy the user's need for higher storage capacities, higher data transfer rates and long-term archival media properties. Digital optical tape is a promising technology to satisfy these user's needs. As any emerging data storage technology, the industry faces many technological and standardization challenges. The technological challenges are great, but feasible to overcome. Although it is too early to consider formal industry standards, the optical tape industry has decided to work together by initiating prestandardization efforts that may lead in the future to formal voluntary industry standards. This paper will discuss current industry optical tape drive developments and the types of standards that will be required for the technology. The status of current industry prestandardization efforts will also be discussed.

Development, refinement, and testing of a short term solar flare prediction algorithm

Progress toward performance of the tasks and accomplishing the goals set forth in the two year Research Grant included primarily analysis of digital data sets and determination of methodology associated with the analysis of the very large, unique, and complex collection of digital solar magnetic field data. The treatment of each magnetogram as a unique set of data requiring special treatment was found to be necessary. It is determined that a person familiar with the data, the analysis system, and logical, coherent outcome of the analysis must conduct each analysis, and interact with the analysis program(s) significantly sometimes many iterations for successful calibration and analysis of the data set. With this interaction, the data sets yield valuable, coherent analyses. During this period, it was also decided that only data sets taken inside heliographic longitudes (Central Meridian Distance) East and West 30 degrees (within 30 degrees of the Central Meridian of the Sun). If the total data set is then found to be numerically inadequate for the final analysis, 30 - 45 degrees Central Meridian Distance data will then be analyzed. The Optical Data storage system (MSFC observatory) was found appropriate for use both in intermediate storage of the data (preliminary to analysis), and for storage of the analyzed data sets for later parametric extraction.

Advanced Recording and Preprocessing of Physiological Signals

The measurement of the volume flow-rate of blood in an artery or vein requires both an estimate of the flow velocity and its spatial distribution and the corresponding cross-sectional area. Transcutaneous measurements of these parameters can be performed using ultrasonic techniques that are analogous to the measurement of moving objects by use of a radar. Modern digital data recording and preprocessing methods were applied to the measurement of blood-flow velocity by means of the CW Doppler ultrasonic technique. Only the average flow velocity was measured and no distribution or size information was obtained. Evaluations of current flowmeter design and performance, ultrasonic transducer fabrication methods, and other related items are given. The main thrust was the development of effective data-handling and processing methods by application of modern digital techniques. The evaluation resulted in useful improvements in both the flowmeter instrumentation and the ultrasonic transducers. Effective digital processing algorithms that provided enhanced blood-flow measurement accuracy and sensitivity were developed. Block diagrams illustrative of the equipment setup are included.

A rocket-borne pulse-height analyzer for energetic particle measurements

The pulse-height analyzer basically resembles a time-sharing multiplexing data-acquisition system which acquires analog data (from energetic particle spectrometers) and converts them into digital code. The PHA simultaneously acquires pulse-height information from the analog signals of the four input channels and sequentially multiplexes the digitized data to a microprocessor. The PHA together with the microprocessor form an on-board real-time data-manipulation system. The system processes data obtained during the rocket flight and reduces the amount of data to be sent back to the ground station. Consequently the data-reduction process for the rocket experiments is speeded up. By using a time-sharing technique, the throughput rate of the microprocessor is increased. Moreover, data from several particle spectrometers are manipulated to share one information channel; consequently, the TM capacity is increased.

The Earth Resources Laboratory Applications Software (ELAS) in university research and education: An operator oriented geobased information system

Created for analyzing and processing digital data such as that collected by multispectral scanners or digitized from maps, ELAS is designed for ease of user operation and includes its own FORTRAN operating monitor and an expandable set of application modules which are FORTRAN overlays. On those machines that do not support FORTRAN overlaying, the modules exist as subprograms. The subsystem can be implemented on most 16-bit or 32-bit machines and is capable of, but not limited to, operating on low-cost minicomputer systems. The recommended hardware configuration for ELAS and a representative listing of some operating and application modules are presented.

Potential benefits of new satellite sensors to wetland mapping

Simulated Thematic Mapper (TMS) data are compared with data from a simulated multispectral scanner to determine whether digital data from the Thematic Mapper on board Landsat will be adequate for wetland mapping. Also considered is the question whether the Thematic Mapper will in fact improve discrimination among wetland cover types. It is found that for the six cover types examined the Thematic Mapper has the greatest discriminatory power in the infrared wavelength range from 1.0 to 1.3 microns. A distinct separation was found between low marsh and high marsh species in the middle infrared band (TM5), and this is expected to assist in the inventory of wetland habitats in the future.

Climatic, eustatic, and tectnoic controls on Quarternary deposits and landforms, Red Sea coast, Egypt

The degree to which local climatic variations, eustatic sea level fluctuations, and tectonic uplift have influenced the development of Quaternary marine and fluvial landforms and deposits along the Red Sea coast, Eastern Desert, was investigated using a combination of remote sensing and field data, age determinations of corals, and numerical simulations. False color composites generated from Landsat Thematic Mapper and SPOT image data, digital elevation models derived from sterophotogrammetric analysis of SPOT data, and field observations document that a approximately 10-km wide swath inland from the coast is covered in many places with coalescing alluvial fans of Quaternary age. Wadis cutting through the fans exhibit several pairs of fluvial terraces, and wadi walls expose alluvium interbedded with corraline limestone deposits Further, three distinct coral terraces are evident along the coatline. Climatic, eustatic, and tectonic uplift controls on the overall system were simulated using a cellular automata algorithm with the following characteristics: (1) uplift as a function of position and time, as defined by the elevations and ages of corals; (2) climatic variations driven by insolation changes associated with Milankovitch cycles; (3) sea level fluctuations based on U/Th ages of coral terraces and eustatic data; and (4) parametrized fluvial erosion and deposition. Results imply that the fans and coralline limestones were generated in a setting in which the tectonic uplift rate decreased over the Quarternary to negligible values at present. Coralline limestones formed furing eustatic highstands when alluvium was trapped uspstream and wadis filled with debris. During lowstands, wadis cut into sedimentary deposits; coupled with continuing uplift, fans were dissected, leaving remnant surfaces, and wadi-related terraces were generated by down cutting. Only landforms from the past three to four eustatic sea level cycles (i.e., approximately 300 to 400 kyr) are likely to have survived erosion and deposition associated with fluvial processes.
