Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS), General Electric Phase 1. Volume 3: Energy conversion subsystems and components. Part 3: Gasification, process fuels, and balance of plant

Results are presented of an investigation of gasification and clean fuels from coal. Factors discussed include: coal and coal transportation costs; clean liquid and gas fuel process efficiencies and costs; and cost, performance, and environmental intrusion elements of the integrated low-Btu coal gasification system. Cost estimates for the balance-of-plant requirements associated with advanced energy conversion systems utilizing coal or coal-derived fuels are included.

EMTP based stability analysis of space station electric power system in a test bed environment

The Space Station Freedom Electric Power System (EPS) will convert solar energy into electric energy and distribute the same using an 'all dc', Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) System. Power conditioning devices (dc to dc converters) are needed to interconnect parts of this system operating at different nominal voltage levels. Operation of such devices could generate under damped oscillations (instability) under certain conditions. Criteria for instability are examined and verified for a single device. Suggested extension of the criteria to a system operation is examined by using the EMTP model of the PMAD DC test bed. Wherever possible, data from the test bed is compared with the modeling results.

Relationship of dusk sector radial electric field to energy dispersion at the inner edge of the electron plasma sheet

It is shown that, by assuming that the magnetospheric particle boundaries are the result of steady state convection, the electron boundaries in the dusk sector are essentially sensitive to the local, not the global, electric field configuration. A simple, direct relationship is obtained between the dusk sector radial electric field and the inner edge of electron boundaries at various energies.

Energy Augmentation for Vehicle Electric Systems (EAVES)

This preliminary study evaluated eight concepts for augmenting the energy state of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles. Advanced Air Mobility electric vehicles could need additional charge due to depleted batteries (e.g., strong winds along the way) while approaching their destination. There are five direct charging and three indirect charging concepts presented in this paper. The concepts are in the preliminary research stage and are being refined. Considering the concepts are for the year 2045 timeframe, there is sufficient time to evolve them, along with the designs of these electric air vehicles. This Technical Memorandum describes more detail and provides a discussion on the desirability, viability, feasibility, and wickedness of these energy augmentation concepts. A discussion of barriers and initial investigation approach for the concepts is presented as well. One intent for the presentation of this Technical Memorandum is to capture the work done from March through September 2022 within NASA’s Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) Project, in the Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program. At the end of the effort, it was decided that only one concept would be further investigated. The rest of the concepts for energy augmentation would be described in this document and could be picked up later if NASA chose to further investigate them. This document is a collection of input from the authors regarding the concepts they worked on. It is not intended to be a conference or journal publication, but a record of research conducted on the concepts considered by the Energy Augmentation for Vehicle Electric Systems (EAVES) team consisting of the authors. Mr. Todd Stinchfield was the Principal Investigator.

Prospects for Nuclear Electric Propulsion Using Closed-Cycle Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion

Nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) has long been recognized as a major enabling technology for scientific and human exploration of the solar system, and it may conceivably form the basis of a cost-effective space transportation system suitable for space commerce. The chief technical obstacles to realizing this vision are the development of efficient, high-power (megawatt-class) electric thrusters and the development of low specific mass (less than 1 kg/kWe) power plants. Furthermore, comprehensive system analyses of multimegawatt class NEP systems are needed in order to critically assess mission capability and cost attributes. This Technical Publication addresses some of these concerns through a systematic examination of multimegawatt space power installations in which a gas-cooled nuclear reactor is used to drive a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator in a closed-loop Brayton cycle. The primary motivation for considering MHD energy conversion is the ability to transfer energy out of a gas that is simply too hot for contact with any solid material. This has several intrinsic advantages including the ability to achieve high thermal efficiency and power density and the ability to reject heat at elevated temperatures. These attributes lead to a reduction in system specific mass below that obtainable with turbine-based systems, which have definite solid temperature limits for reliable operation. Here, the results of a thermodynamic cycle analysis are placed in context with a preliminary system analysis in order to converge on a design space that optimizes performance while remaining clearly within established bounds of engineering feasibility. MHD technology issues are discussed including the conceptual design of a nonequilibrium disk generator and opportunities for exploiting neutron-induced ionization mechanisms as a means of increasing electrical conductivity and enhancing performance and reliability. The results are then used to make a cursory examination of piloted Mars missions during the 2018 opportunity.

Radio-frequency and microwave energies, magnetic and electric fields

The biological effects of radio frequency, including microwave, radiation are considered. Effects on body temperature, the eye, reproductive systems, internal organs, blood cells, the cardiovascular system, and the central nervous system are included. Generalized effects of electric and magnetic fields are also discussed. Experimentation with animals and clinical studies on humans are cited, and possible mechanisms of the effects observed are suggested.

Optimize out-of-core thermionic energy conversion for nuclear electric propulsion

Current designs for out of core thermionic energy conversion (TEC) to power nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) were evaluated. Approaches to improve out of core TEC are emphasized and probabilities for success are indicated. TEC gains are available with higher emitter temperatures and greater power densities. Good potentialities for accommodating external high temperature, high power density TEC with heat pipe cooled reactors exist.
