Determination of plasma parameters from soft X-ray images for coronal holes /open magnetic field configurations/ and coronal large-scale structures /extended closed-field configurations/

In connection with high-quality solar soft X-ray images the 'quiet' features of the inner corona have been separated into two sharply different components, including the strongly reduced emission areas or coronal holes (CH) and the extended regions of looplike emission features or large-scale structures (LSS). Particular central meridian passage observations of the prominent CH1 on August 21, 1973, are selected for a quantitative study. Histogram photographic density distributions for full-disk images at other central meridian passages of CH 1 are also presented, and the techniques of converting low photographic density data to deposited energy are discussed, with particular emphasis on the problems associated with the CH data.

Coordinated ionospheric and magnetospheric observations from the ISIS 2 satellite by the ISIS 2 experimenters. Volume 2: Auroral optical emissions magnetic field perturbations, and plasma characteristics, measured simultaneously on the same magnetic field line

The data set consists of a selected number of passes, each comprising a format combination that is most appropriate for the particular data set. A list of ISIS 2 experimenters, with addresses and telephone numbers is included. A brief description of the ISIS 2 satellite is given, followed by more detailed instrument descriptions, format descriptions, data set descriptions, and the data themselves.

Measurements of energy exchange between acoustic fields and non-uniform steady flow fields

Data were obtained for a resonance tube having a vent at the center in the lateral boundary, an average flow being introduced at the ends. Experiments were done for both circular and slot vents, over ranges of both frequency and Mach number. It was demonstrated that a subsonic exhaust vent in the lateral boundary of a cold flow resonance tube provides a gain of acoustic energy for the fundamental mode within the resonance tube. The gain of acoustic energy increases approximately linearly with the Mach number, as predicted by the one-dimensional analysis. The one-dimensional result gives the values for the slope representing the variation of the attenuation coefficient of the exhaust vent with respect to the average Mach number of the flow within roughly 30% of those measured. It has been verified that the subsonic vent produces a gain proportional to the average Mach number, proportional to the frequency, and independent of the shape. The results may be applicable to the study of vibration phenomena in solid propellant rocket engines.

The Archean crust in the Wawa-Chapleau-Timmins region. A field guidebook prepared for the 1983 Archean Geochemistry-Early Crustal Genesis Field Conference

This guidebook describes the characteristics and interrelationships of Archean greenstone-granite and high-grade gneiss terrains of the Superior Province. A 300-km long west to east transect between Wawa and Timmins, Ontario will be used to illustrate regional-scale relationships. The major geological features of the Superior Province are described.

The structure of the vorticity field in turbulent channel flow. Part 1: Analysis of instantaneous fields and statistical correlations

An investigation into the existence of hairpin vortices in turbulent channel flow is conducted using a database generated by the large eddy simulation technique. It is shown that away from the wall the distribution of the inclination angle of vorticity vector attains its maximum at about 45 deg to the wall. Two point correlations of velocity and vorticity fluctuations strongly support a flow model consisting of vortical structures inclined at 45 deg to the wall. The instantaneous vorticity vectors plotted in planes inclined at 45 deg show that the flow contains an appreciable number of hairpins. Vortex lines are used to display the three dimensional structure of hairpins, which are shown to be generated from deformation of transverse vortex filaments.
