A complete solar resource data set is essential for any stage of a solar energy project - from feasibility studies to daily operations. But measured or modeled solar resource data are prone to data gaps and data quality issues. To mitigate these issues, a data imputation process should be implemented to obtain a complete and reliable temporal and spatial data series. This study focused on imputing temporal scales by applying random and artificial data gaps and then implementing eight imputation methods, including the Kalman filtering and smoothing and stine interpolations. These methods were implemented on 1-minute to half hourly irradiance data for 1 year using a few locations from the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) and ground measurement data set. The results demonstrated that some of the simpler methods, such as the stine and linear interpolation methods, were the relatively best models based on the statistical metrics for imputing NSRDB and ground measurement data, respectively.
High cycle corrosion fatigue (HCCF) life S-N tests were conducted on wrought 17-4PH in various water environments under accelerated testing conditions. For tests conducted in aerated Columbia River water and in aerated ASTM Type IV water, at ~10 6 cycles, the HCCF stress amplitude was ~70% of the value in air. For deaerated water, the value was ~80%. These values are consist with the small amount of literature data on HCCF life of 17-4PH in water environments. The measured fatigue life both in air and water are much better than the ASME trend curve of high cycle fatigue life of moderate and high strength steels. Measured values were also much better than found in a hydropower-relevant study in the literature on cast 17-4PH. The effect of Amersite 61W on HCCF life was evaluated and found to cause very low times to specimen failure compared to all other water environments.

New thermoelectric materials with superior transport properties at high temperatures have been discovered. These materials are part of the large family of skutterudites, a class of compounds which have shown a good potential for thermoelectric applications [1-4].
In this presentation we will discuss the performance of classification and retrieval algorithms for spaceborne cloud and precipitation radars such as the Global Precipitation Measurement mission Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (GPM/DPR), and notional radar for the Aerosol/Clouds/Ecosystem (ACE) mission and related concepts. Spaceborne radar measurements are simulated either from Airborne Precipitation Radar 2nd Generation observations, or from atmospheric model outputs via instrument simulators contained in the NASA Earth Observing Systems Simulators Suite (NEOS(sup 3)). Both methods account for the three dimensional nature of the scattering field at resolutions smaller than that of the spaceborne radar under consideration. We will focus on the impact of non-homogeneities of the field of hydrometeors within the beam. We will discuss also the performance of methods to identify and mitigate such conditions, and the resulting improvements in retrieval accuracy. The classification and retrieval algorithms analyzed in this study are those derived from APR-2's Suite of Processing and Retrieval Algorithms (ASPRA); here generalized to operate on an arbitrary set of radar configuration parameters to study the expected performance of spaceborne cloud and precipitation radars. The presentation will highlight which findings extend to other algorithm families and which ones do not.

Abstract We report a carbon‐boron clathrate with composition 2 La@B 6 C 6 (LaB 3 C 3 ). Like recently reported SrB 3 C 3 , [1] single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and computational modelling indicate that the isostructural La member crystallizes in the cubic bipartite sodalite structure (Type‐VII clathrate) with La atoms encapsulated within truncated octahedral cages composed of alternating carbon and boron atoms. The covalent nature of the B−C bonding results in a hard, incompressible framework, and owing to the balanced electron count, La 3+ [B 3 C 3 ] 3− exhibits markedly improved pressure stability and is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap predicted near 1.3 eV. A variety of different guest atoms may potentially be substituted within Type‐VII clathrate cages, presenting opportunities for a large family of boron‐stabilized, carbon‐based clathrates with ranging physical properties.
Abstract Thermal annealing induced microstructure evolution and properties enhancement of polybutylene terephthalate/polypropylene/carbon nanotubes (PBT/PP/CNTs) nanocomposites was methodically investigated. The electrical conductive PBT/PP/CNTs nanocomposites with a low percolation threshold were obtained by simple melt blending due to the selective location of the CNTs in PBT phase and the formation of the double percolation structure. Thermal annealing further remarkably decreased the volume resistivity of the nanocomposites, with the maximum reduction of seven orders of magnitude. Scanning electron microscope observation and rheology tests demonstrated that the relatively large CNTs agglomerates were redistributed to build more homogeneous CNTs networks after annealing. The phase coalescence during annealing promoted the formation of the more perfect co‐continuous structure. These phenomena helped to enhance the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites. Flexural properties of the nanocomposites were also enhanced after annealing, which might be due to the more effective stress transfer between the polymer and CNTs induced by the reconstructed CNTs networks. The nanocomposites obtained in this study possess excellent electrical and mechanical properties, which can be applied to the fields of sensors, electromagnetic interference shielding, anti‐static materials, and so forth.

Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) has superior physical properties to most available thermoplastics compatible with material extrusion-based 3D printing, including analogs in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family. To date, the performance of fused filament fabrication (FFF) compatible PEKK has been detailed primarily as a function of varying the isomer ratios composing the co-polymer structure. The strategy to form blends or composites with PEKK for FFF is attractive for further tailoring of performance in application, yet has received limited attention. Here, we report the integration of three grades of mica platelets into PEKK at 10% and 30% mass loadings to generate an array of filament feedstocks that were then used to print objects with a simple FFF machine. The effects of mica coating chemistry and surface treatment on the compatibility with PEKK and resulting properties are described. Mica fillers at both loadings have only subtle influence on the FFF relevant melt rheological properties inherent to PEKK. Pigment micas at high loadings can lower the melting temperature of PEKK (up to 19 ºC) without shifting its glass transition temperature and inhibit much of the undesirable crystallization occurring during processing with unfilled PEKK. The printed composites were effectively cold crystallized post-printing, affording crystalline fractions up to 90% relative to unfilled PEKK with increased dimensional stabilities. All micas, when used as fillers in low and high relative PEKK crystallinities, significantly increased the tensile modulus (as high as 126% or to 7.31 GPa) of parts in correlation to the loading. Furthermore, the underlying microstructural features of a printed composite were compared to unfilled PEKK by use of a high-resolution helical micro-computed tomography instrument. Practically, pigment micas can confer a wide range of rich colors to 3D-printed PEKK.
High ammonia and organic acids contents of decomposed slaughterhouse waste (SHW) often result in the severe inhibition or even failure of the anaerobic digestion (AD). The two-stage AD system can alleviate the ammonia inhibition; however, addition of alkali is often needed to maintain the neutral condition. In this study, seashell wastes containing high percentage of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) were for the first time added in a pilot scale methanogenic digester treating chicken blood waste to retain the microorganisms and provide pH buffers for the substrate. A long-duration performance of this digester was conducted for 400 days under different organic loading rates (OLRs). The results show that methane yields of the digester were 244.8 and 224.9 mL g –1 COD added at OLR of 0.4 and 0.6 g COD L –1 d –1 , respectively, higher than the results of previous studies treating the similar feedstock. An AD system treating blood wastes of a typical poultry slaughterhouse was also proposed for which energy balance and carbon footprint analyses were conducted. The energy production of 0.35 MJ kg –1 blood and carbon emissions reduction of 0.05 kg CO 2 -eq kg –1 blood can be achieved from treating blood waste of the broiler chicken. Finally, this study reveals that using seashell wastes in an AD treating SHW can facilitate the reuse of aquaculture wastes and improve the sustainability of meat industry.
