Branching ratios for the three most intense gamma rays in the decay of 47 Ca

A sample of 47 Ca produced through isotope harvesting at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory was used to measure branching ratios of 7.17(5)%, 7.11(5)%, and 75.0(5)% for the 489.2, 807.9, and 1297.1 keV characteristic gamma rays, respectively. Based on these updated branching ratios, the ground state to ground state 47 Ca to 47 Sc beta decay branching ratio has been indirectly measured as 17.7(5)% and the ground state to 1297.1 keV excited state as 82.2(5)%. Here these values represent a greatly increased precision for all five branching ratios compared to the currently accepted values. The measurements presented here were made relative to the ingrown 47Sc daughter in a 47 Ca sample and the well-established 159.4 keV gamma-ray branching ratio and the half-life for the decay of 47 Sc. These measurements were supported by verifying that the half-lives measured from characteristic gamma-ray peaks over multiple spectra for both 47 Ca and 47 Sc were consistent with previously reported values. Additionally, the half-lives of both 47 Ca and 47 Sc were independently measured with Liquid Scintillation Counting to reverify the previously reported values used in this study to find updated gamma-ray branching ratio values.

Insights from application of a hierarchical spatio-temporal model to an intensive urban black carbon monitoring dataset

Existing regulatory pollutant monitoring networks rely on a small number of centrally located measurement sites that are purposefully sited away from major emission sources. While informative of general air quality trends regionally, these networks often do not fully capture the local variability of air pollution exposure within a community. Recent technological advancements have reduced the cost of sensors, allowing air quality monitoring campaigns with high spatial resolution. The 100×100 black carbon (BC) monitoring network deployed 100 low-cost BC sensors across the 15 km 2 West Oakland, CA community for 100 days in the summer of 2017, producing a nearly continuous site-specific time series of BC concentrations which we aggregated to one-hour averages. Leveraging this dataset, we employed a hierarchical spatio-temporal model to accurately predict local spatio-temporal concentration patterns throughout West Oakland, at locations without monitors (average cross-validated hourly temporal R 2 =0.60). Using our model, we identified spatially varying temporal pollution patterns associated with small-scale geographic features and proximity to local sources. In a sub-sampling analysis, here we demonstrated that fine scale predictions of nearly comparable accuracy can be obtained with our modeling approach by using ~30% of the 100×100 BC network supplemented by a shorter-term high-density campaign.

Watershed Workflow: A toolset for parameterizing data-intensive, integrated hydrologic models

Integrated, distributed hydrologic models leverage advances in computational power and data accessibility to improve predictive understanding of the water cycle. While impressive advances in this area of environmental modeling have been accomplished, such models are still rarely used, partially because of difficulty integrating model and data. This research describes the release of Watershed Workflow version 1.2, a new library aiming to automate and enable complex workflows defining inputs to high resolution, integrated, distributed hydrologic models. Watershed Workflow provides tools enabling the discovery, acquisition, mapping, and coordination of watershed geometry, land cover, soil properties, and meteorological data. It enables the construction of unstructured meshes that incorporate this data, and provides tools for automating a “first” simulation on any watershed in the United States. We present the design of the workflow tool, and describe best practices for its usage, culminating in a final example from watershed specification to simulation at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) With Simultaneously Integrated Boost Shortens Treatment Time and Is Noninferior to Conventional Radiation Therapy Followed by Sequential Boost in Adjuvant Breast Cancer Treatment: Results of a Large Randomized Phase III Trial (IMRT-MC2 Trial)

In the modern era, improvements in radiation therapy techniques have paved the way for simultaneous integrated boost irradiation in adjuvant breast radiation therapy after breast conservation surgery. Nevertheless, randomized trials supporting the noninferiority of this treatment to historical standards of care approach are lacking.

Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy to the Prostate Bed With Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): A Phase 2 Trial

Postoperative radiation therapy (RT) is a common therapy used for patients with prostate cancer. Although clinical trials have established the safety and efficacy of hypofractionation as a primary therapy, there are limited data in a postoperative setting. We conducted a prospective trial to evaluate the safety and feasibility of postoperative hypofractionated RT to the prostate bed.
