Power electronic applications for Space Station Freedom

NASA plans to orbit a permanently manned space station in the late 1990s, which requires development and assembly of a photovoltaic (PV) power source system to supply up to 75 kW of electrical power average during the orbital period. The electrical power requirements are to be met by a combination of PV source, storage, and control elements for the sun and eclipse periods. The authors discuss the application of power electronics and controls to manage the generation, storage, and distribution of power to meet the station loads, as well as the computer models used for analysis and simulation of the PV power system. The requirements for power source integrated controls to adjust storage charge power during the insolation period current limiting, breaker interrupt current values, and the electrical fault protection approach are defined. Based on these requirements, operating concepts have been defined which then become drivers for specific system and element design.

Rainbow net analysis of VAXcluster system availability

A system modeling technique, Rainbow Nets, is used to evaluate the availability and mean-time-to-interrupt of the VAXcluster. These results are compared to the exact analytic results showing that reasonable accuracy is achieved through simulation. The complexity of the Rainbow Net does not increase as the number of processors increases, but remains constant, unlike a Markov model which expands exponentially. The constancy is achieved by using tokens with identity attributes (items) that can have additional attributes associated with them (features) which can exist in multiple states. The time to perform the simulation increases, but this is a polynomial increase rather than exponential. There is no restriction on distributions used for transition firing times, allowing real situations to be modeled more accurately by choosing the distribution which best fits the system performance and eliminating the need for simplifying assumptions.

A data acquisition and control program for axial-torsional fatigue testing

A computer program was developed for data acquisition and control of axial-torsional fatigue experiments. The multitasked, interrupt-driven program was written in Pascal and Assembly. This program is capable of dual-channel control and six-channel data acquisition. It can be utilized to perform inphase and out-of-phase axial-torsional isothermal fatigue or deformation experiments. The program was successfully used to conduct inphase axial-torsional fatigue experiments on 304 stainless steel at room temperature and on Hastelloy X at 800 C. The details of the software and some of the results generated to date are presented.

Oxidation instability of SiC and Si3N4 following thermal excursions

The effect of thermal excursion and thermal cycling on the oxidation stability of chemical vapor-deposited (CVD) SiC and Si3N4 was studied at 1350 C. Thermal cycling alone produced no noticeable change in oxidation kinetics. However, TEM showed that oxide scales grown in cycles consist of alternating layers of SiO2 and Si2N2O. When the oxidation of CVD SiC or Si3N4 at 1350 C was interrupted with a 1.5-h annealing in Ar at 1500 C, the kinetics of reoxidation at 1350 C were found to be drastically increased. The SiC and Si3N4 then oxidized essentially at the same rate, which is over 50 times the preannealing rate, and comparable to the expected oxidation rate of these materials at 1500 C.

Determining The Degree Of Graphitization In Carbon Composites

Method for determining degree of graphitization of carbon/carbon composite material combines infrared spectral experimental technique with thermodynamical theoretical model of solubility. By interrupting manufacturing process at almost any time and applying method, one can judge quality of composite and monitor chemical transformations taking place during process. Also computes effective solubility parameter for composite considered as unitary material. Parameter significant for subsequent fabrication steps involving chemical treatments; e.g., coating or joining with adhesives.

Expanded serial communication capability for the transport systems research vehicle laptop computers

A recent upgrade of the Transport Systems Research Vehicle (TSRV) operated by the Advanced Transport Operating Systems Program Office at the NASA Langley Research Center included installation of a number of Grid 1500 series laptop computers. Each unit is a 80386-based IBM PC clone. RS-232 data busses are needed for TSRV flight research programs, and it has been advantageous to extend the application of the Grids in this area. Use was made of the expansion features of the Grid internal bus to add a user programmable serial communication channel. Software to allow use of the Grid bus expansion has been written and placed in a Turbo C library for incorporation into applications programs in a transparent manner via function calls. Port setup; interrupt-driven, two-way data transfer; and software flow control are built into the library functions.

Whiskerless Schottky diode

A Schottky diode for millimeter and submillimeter wave applications is comprised of a multi-layered structure including active layers of gallium arsenide on a semi-insulating gallium arsenide substrate with first and second insulating layers of silicon dioxide on the active layers of gallium arsenide. An ohmic contact pad lays on the silicon dioxide layers. An anode is formed in a window which is in and through the silicon dioxide layers. An elongated contact finger extends from the pad to the anode and a trench, preferably a transverse channel or trench of predetermined width, is formed in the active layers of the diode structure under the contact finger. The channel extends through the active layers to or substantially to the interface of the semi-insulating gallium arsenide substrate and the adjacent gallium arsenide layer which constitutes a buffer layer. Such a structure minimizes the effect of the major source of shunt capacitance by interrupting the current path between the conductive layers beneath the anode contact pad and the ohmic contact. Other embodiments of the diode may substitute various insulating or semi-insulating materials for the silicon dioxide, various semi-conductors for the active layers of gallium arsenide, and other materials for the substrate, which may be insulating or semi-insulating.

Growth of III-V films by control of MBE growth front stoichiometry

For the growth of strain-layer materials and high quality single and multiple quantum wells, the instantaneous control of growth front stoichiometry is critical. The process of the invention adjusts the offset or phase of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) control shutters to program the instantaneous arrival or flux rate of In and As4 reactants to grow InAs. The interrupted growth of first In, then As4, is also a key feature.

A video event trigger for high frame rate, high resolution video technology

When video replaces film the digitized video data accumulates very rapidly, leading to a difficult and costly data storage problem. One solution exists for cases when the video images represent continuously repetitive 'static scenes' containing negligible activity, occasionally interrupted by short events of interest. Minutes or hours of redundant video frames can be ignored, and not stored, until activity begins. A new, highly parallel digital state machine generates a digital trigger signal at the onset of a video event. High capacity random access memory storage coupled with newly available fuzzy logic devices permits the monitoring of a video image stream for long term or short term changes caused by spatial translation, dilation, appearance, disappearance, or color change in a video object. Pretrigger and post-trigger storage techniques are then adaptable for archiving the digital stream from only the significant video images.

Welding space vacuum technology

The objective was to assist the EH 42 Division in putting together a vacuum system that could attain the desired pressure and be large enough to accommodate the gas-metal arc (GMA) welding fixture apparatus. A major accomplishment was the design and fabrication of the controller/annunciator for the 4' by 8' system. It contains many safety features such as thermocouple set point relays that will only allow inlet and exit gas and vacuum valves to be operated at pre-selected system pressures, and a fail safe mode for power interruptions and operator mistakes. It is felt that significant progress was made in this research effort to weld in a vacuum environment. With continued efforts to increase the pump speeds for vacuum chambers and further studies on weld fixtures and gas inlet pressures, the NASA program will be successful.

Formation of a metastable ferromagnetic tau phase during containerless melt processing and rapid quenching in Mn-Al-C alloys

Solidification of selected Mn-Al-C alloys during containerless levitation and rapid quenching has yielded the first report for a ferromagnetic metastable tau phase formed directly from the melt. Complete solidification to tau phase was interrupted by the competitive evolution of an equilibrium epsilon phase during recalescence. The amount of undercooling required to produce the metastable ferromagnetic tau phase in a Mn(0.55)Al(0.433)C(0.017) alloy during solidification was estimated as approximately 470 K based on differential thermal analysis results. When the alloy carbon content was increased to 3.4 at. pct, transition in structure development occurred so that the samples exhibited gamma 2 phase formation as well as tau and epsilon phases.

Solar and stellar observations from the South Pole

It is noted that an astronomical observatory located at the geographic South Pole could provide significant new insights into the physical bases of stellar variability by monitoring stars for lengthy periods of time with minimal interruptions by the day-night cycle. Three broad topics that could be studied with monitoring techniques are discussed: helioseismology, asteroseismology, and magnetic phenomena on stars. Consideration is given to comparisons with studies of solarlike active phenomena on stars utilizing high-resolution spectroscopy in the optical and ultraviolet, combined with X-ray and radio observations.
