Effect of grain orientation and coating on thermal fatigue resistance of a directionally solidified superalloy (MAR-M 247)

The effect of off-axis directionally solidified (DS) grain growth on thermal fatigue life of Mar-M 247 alloy was evaluated. Uncoated conventionally cast as well as DS wedge bars were cycled in a burner rig between 1070 C and room temperature. The longitudinal axis and leading edge of the specimen coincided. As the angle between the specimen longitudinal axis and growth axis increased, the thermal fatigue life decreased for both the uncoated and aluminide-coated bars. Life increases of about 50 cycles for the DS conditions were attributed to coating. The decrease in thermal fatigue life with increasing angle is primarily attributed to the increase in modulus of elasticity with increasing angle and not to the intersection of DS grain boundaries with the specimen leading edge. The thermal fatigue cracks were observed to be transgranular in the DS material. Limited tensile and stress-rupture properties of conventionally cast and off-axis DS Mar-M 247 alloy are also presented.

Global anomaly and undulation recovery using GEOS-3 altimeter data

The data were adjusted to remove orbit error and altimeter bias in a primary adjustment and four regional adjustments. The root mean square crossover discrepancy was about + or - 55 cm after the adjustment. The adjusted altimeter data, now considered to give geoid undulations, was used to predict values at 1 deg intersections from which an oceanic geoid map, with predicted accuracies, was prepared at a two meter contour interval. This geoid was compared to the Gemini 9 geoid over very long profiles to examine the long wavelength error in the altimeter geoid. At a wavelength of 13,010 km the root mean squares difference was 57 cm. The altimeter geoid was also compared to altimeter geoids fixed by precise orbits. A root mean square difference was found of about 1 m with a systematic difference that implied the equatorial radius of the earth was 6,378,137 meters. The adjusted altimeter data was also used to determine a total of 29,479 1 deg x 1 deg anomalies (and undulations).

Investigation of the magnetospheric boundary plasma and magnetic field data from Explorers 33, 43, and 50

Understanding of the plasma depletion process in the dayside magnetosheath, the nature of magnetotail boundary motion, and the geometry of the magnetospheric boundary layers was examined. A model of the dayside boundary layers, based on the hypothesis that merging occurs only for strictly anitparallel fields was developed which provides a qualitative solution to the problem of the half-wave rectifier response of the magnetosphere to the solar wind electric field. Regarding magnetotail boundary motion, consideration of the data led to the conclusion that at lunar distance, substorms are associated with very large amplitude compressional wave motion of the sausage type. A study of IMF orientation for depletion and nondepletion cases suggests that depletion is most likely to occur for angles between the IMF and the normal to the magnetopause at the measurement location near 90 deg, in agreement with predictions. Observations of the heat flux in the dayside magnetosheath plasma suggest that the energized plasma ions have their source along a given flux tube at that intersection with the bow shock where the magnetic field is most compressed.

A numerical solution algorithm for prediction of turbulent aerodynamic corner flows

A numerical solution algorithm is established for prediction of subsonic turbulent three-dimensional flows in aerodynamic configuration juncture regions. In concert with a complete three-dimensional exterior potential flow solution, the developed parabolic algorithm yields prediction of the details of the corner region flowfield. Turbulence closure is established using the complete Reynolds stress. Pressure coupling is accomplished using the concepts of complementary and particular solutions to a Poisson equation. Numerical results for three-dimensional turbulent flow in the juncture of two intersecting parabolic arc airfoils are presented.

Stress-intensity factors for a wide range of semi-elliptical surface cracks in finite-thickness plates

Surface cracks are among the more common flaws in aircraft and pressure vessel components. Several calculations of stress-intensity factors for semi-elliptical surface cracks subjected to tension have appeared in the literature. However, some of these solutions are in disagreement by 50-100%. In this paper, stress-intensity factors for shallow and deep semi-elliptical surface cracks in plates subjected to tension are presented. To verify the accuracy of the three-dimensional finite-element models employed, convergence was studied by varying the number of degrees of freedom in the models from 1500 to 6900. The 6900 degrees of freedom used here were more than twice the number used in previously reported solutions. Also, the stress-intensity variations in the boundary-layer region at the intersection of the crack with the free surface were investigated.

Linearization of unsteady transonic flows containing shocks

The problem of determining unsteady airloads on a thin, three-dimensional, planar wing oscillating with infinitesimal amplitude in a transonic flow is considered. The flow is assumed to be governed by the transonic small disturbance equation. The unsteady disturbance is taken to be a small perturbation superposed on a given steady mean flowfield. The equations governing the unsteady field, allowing for induced oscillations of any embedded shocks, are obtained. The linearization is shown to fail, locally, at the intersection of a shock with the wing surface, although the failure has little influence on the sectional characteristics of the wing.

Helios 2-Vela-Ariel 5 gamma-ray burst source position

The gamma-ray burst of January 28, 1976, one of 18 events thus far detected in interplanetary space with Helios 2, was also observed with the Vela 5A and 6A and the Ariel 5 satellites. A small source field is obtained from the intersection of the region derived from the observed time delays between Helios 2 and Vela 5A and 6A, with the source region independently found with the Ariel 5 X-ray detector. This area contains neither any steady X-ray source as scanned by HEAO 1 nor any previously cataloged X-ray, radio, or infrared sources, X-ray transients, quasars, Seyferts, globular clusters, flare stars, pulsars, white dwarfs, or high enery gamma-ray sources. The region is, however, within the source field of a gamma-ray transient observed in 1974 by Jacobson et al. (1978) which exhibited nuclear gamma-ray line structure.

Inversion of the strain-life and strain-stress relationships for use in metal fatigue analysis

The paper presents closed-form solutions (collocation method and spline-function method) for the constants of the cyclic fatigue life equation so that they can be easily incorporated into cumulative damage analysis. The collocation method involves conformity with the experimental curve at specific life values. The spline-function method is such that the basic life relation is expressed as a two-part function, one applicable at strains above the transition strain (strain at intersection of elastic and plastic lines), the other below. An illustrative example is treated by both methods. It is shown that while the collocation representation has the advantage of simplicity of form, the spline-function representation can be made more accurate over a wider life range, and is simpler to use.

Lead isotope systematics of mare basalt 75075

Uranium, thorium and isotopic lead data are reported for two bulk samples and separated pyroxene, ilmenite and plagioclase from basalt 75075. In a concordia diagram the whole rock, ilmenite and four pyroxene samples define a chord intersecting the concordia curve at approximately 4.25 and 2.8 AE. Three plagioclase samples plot distinctly off the chord. The crystallization age of 75075 is accurately determined at 3.74 AE by Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd and K-Ar measurements from other laboratories. It is not possible to adjust the isotopic composition of initial lead so as to reconcile the U-Pb data with a crystallization age of 3.74 AE. The data therefore indicate some type of post-crystallization disturbance of the U-Pb system that is not detected by the other systems. The 75075 data are one of the few examples of this type of age pattern found on the moon. If the disturbance was a single event, it probably occurred around 2.8 AE ago, the time indicated by the pyroxene, whole rock and ilmenite data.

Volcanism in the Noachis-Hellas region of Mars, 2

Mariner 9 and Viking Orbiter imagery has been examined to investigate volcanism in the Noachis-Hellas region of Mars. A wide variety of probable and possible volcanic features, including cinder cones, flood lavas, wrinkel ridges, cratered domes on the floors of impact craters, shield volcanoes, and possible stratovolcanoes has been observed. The flood lavas of ridged plains and broad, low shield volcanoes are indicative of very fluid lavas of ultrabasic or very basic basaltic composition. Evidence for relatively recent pyroclastic volcanism is present in numerous probable cinder cones and some isolated cratered mountains tentatively identified as stratovolcanoes. The volcanic complex and ridged plains at 68 deg S, 323 deg W appear to be relatively young. The occurrence of the five major volcanic centers of the Noachis-Hellas region at the intersections of ancient Hellas impact basin rings with a postulated northeast-trending fracture system suggests that large-scale volcanic activity may have begun soon after formation of the basin.

Bonded orthotropic strips with cracks

The elastostatic problem for a nonhomogeneous plane which consists of two sets of periodically arranged dissimilar orthotropic strips is considered. It is assumed that the plane contains a series of collinear cracks perpendicular to the interfaces and is loaded in tension away from and perpendicular to the cracks. The problem of cracks fully imbedded into the homogeneous strips is considered. The singular behavior of the stresses for two special crack geometries is studied. The first is the case of a broken laminate in which the crack tips touch the interfaces. The second is the case of cracks crossing the interfaces. An interesting result found from the analysis of the latter is that for certain orthotropic material combinations the stress state at the point of intersection of a crack and an interface may be bounded whereas in isotropic materials at this point stresses are always singular. A number of numerical examples are worked out to separate the primary material parameters influencing the stress intensity factors and the powers of stress singularity, and to determine the trends regarding the influence of the secondary parameters. Some numerical results are given for the stress intensity factors in certain basic crack geometries and for typical material combinations.

Applied regional monitoring of the vernal advancement and retrogradation (green wave effect) of natural vegetation in the Great Plains corridor

The author has identified the following significant results. Rangelands in southwest Texas were used to establish threshold values and limitations on measuring herbaceous biomass under typical arid and semi-arid range conditions. Previous regression relationships established between ND6 and green biomass for two different ecosystems were similar. The west Texas data set for brush-free sites was too small to be statistically conclusive. It appears that a line with a third (and steeper) slope would be best for the west Texas data, and that line would intersect the other two. Results show that similar relationships exist between ND6 and green biomass under low brush canopy cover conditions, but local variations require a calibration to determine the best fit for an ecosystem. The brush canopy has a detrimental effect on the ND6 vs. herbaceous green biomass relationship.

Social psychology on the flight deck

Social psychological and personality factors that can influence resource management on the flight deck are discussed. It is argued that personality and situational factors intersect to determine crew responses and that assessment of performance under full crew and mission conditions can provide the most valuable information about relevant factors. The possibility of training procedures to improve performance on these dimensions is discussed.

A numerical technique for calculation of the noise of high-speed propellers with advanced blade geometry

A numerical technique and computer program were developed for the prediction of the noise of propellers with advanced geometry. The blade upper and lower surfaces are described by a curvilinear coordinate system, which was also used to divide the blade surfaces into panels. Two different acoustic formulations in the time domain were used to improve the speed and efficiency of the noise calculations: an acoustic formualtion with the Doppler factor singularity for panels moving at subsonic speeds and the collapsing sphere formulation for panels moving at transonic or supersonic speeds. This second formulation involves a sphere which is centered at the observer position and whose radius decreases at the speed of sound. The acoustic equation consisted of integrals over the curve of intersection for both the sphere and the panels on the blade. Algorithms used in some parts of the computer program are discussed. Comparisons with measured acoustic data for two model high speed propellers with advanced geometry are also presented.

Heterodyne detection of the 752.033-GHz H2O rotational absorption line

A tunable high resolution two stage heterodyne radiometer was developed for the purpose of investigating the intensity and lineshape of the 752.033 GHz rotational transition of water vapor. Single-sideband system noise temperatures of approximately 45,000 K were obtained using a sensitive GaAs Schottky diode as the first stage mixer. First local oscillator power was supplied by a CO2 laser pumped formic acid laser (761.61 GHz), generating an X-band IF signal with theoretical line center at 9.5744 GHz. Second local oscillator power was provided by means of a 3 GHz waveguide cavity filter with only 9 dB insertion loss. In absorption measurements of the H2O taken from a laboratory simulation of a high altitude rocket plume, the center frequency of the 752 GHz line was determined to within 1 MHz of the reported value. A rotational temperature 75 K, a linewidth 5 MHz and a Doppler shift 3 MHz were measured with the line-of-sight intersecting the simulated-plume axis at a distance downstream of 30 nozzle diameters. These absorption data were obtained against continuum background radiation sources at temperatures of 1175 and 300 K.

Interferometric locating system

A system is described for determining the position of a vehicle or other target that emits radio waves and which is of the type that senses the difference in time of arrival at spaced ground stations of signals from the vehicle to locate the vehicle on a set of intersecting hyperbolas. A network of four ground stations detects the radio emissions from the vehicle and by means of cross correlation derives the relative signal delay at the ground stations from which the vehicle position is deduced. Because the signal detection is by cross correlation, no knowledge of the emission is needed, which makes even unintentional radio noise emissions usable as a locator beacon. By positioning one of the four ground stations at an elevation significantly above the plane of the other three stations, a three dimensional fix on the vehicle is possible.
