Exploring Europa with an RPS-Powered Orbiter Spacecraft

This paper describes a conceptual flagship-class Europa orbiter concept that was assumed to launch as early as 2012, arriving at Europa approximately 8 years later using inner solar system gravity assists to reach Jupiter. Jupiter's intense radiation environment limits the mission duration at Europa to 30 days for this study, though the duration is a result of multiple trades and is by no means fixed. The Europa Subgroup of the Outer Planets Assessment Group identified six primary science objectives for this concept.

Mars Science Laboratory Launch Pad Thermal Control

This paper will describe the challenges faced in accommodating the warm Multi Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) during the pre-launch phases of integration, launch pad operations as well as during launch. Predictions of temperatures during these phases will be presented when all the cooling systems (HRS and A/C) are operational. In-air tests conducted on the spacecraft in December 2008 to simulate the launch conditions were very successful and showed that all components would be within their allowable limits during these phases. Results of these tests will be shared in this paper.

MSL DAN Science Investigation: Physical Simulation of DAN

The main objective of the proposed investigation is to study the characteristics (i.e., hydrogen content, soil composition, layer-structure, etc.) of sub-surface and the surface radiation (neutron in particular) environment.

Systems Engineering Interfaces: A Model Based Approach

Currently: Ops Rev developed and maintains a framework that includes interface-specific language, patterns, and Viewpoints. Ops Rev implements the framework to design MOS 2.0 and its 5 Mission Services. Implementation de-couples interfaces and instances of interaction Future: A Mission MOSE implements the approach and uses the model based artifacts for reviews. The framework extends further into the ground data layers and provides a unified methodology.

Demonstration of a Switched Wideband GaN High-Power Amplifier for Future Space Missions

In this paper, we present the architecture of a Ka-band switched, wideband, high efficiency gallium nitride based high-power amplifier. The architecture is validated by characterizing the driver and power amplifier chain. The measured results include Pout, Gain, PAE, RMS EVM for QPSK, Offset-QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, and 16QAM constellations, 3rd order IMD products, and noise figure. The wide bandwidth and high output power of the amplifier will enable future user terminals to interoperate between multiple service provider’s space networks.
