The scanning modulation collimator experiment on the HEAO-1

The purpose of this experiment is to localize celestial sources of X-rays to a precision of 5 to 20 arcsec, so that they may be identified with optical or radio counterparts. We also study their angular size and structure, to elucidate the X-ray emission mechanism. Four grids, wound with nickel alloy wires, are aligned to produce a modulated X-ray signal when the spacecraft rotation carries the collimator field of view across an X-ray source. An image dissector star camera and rate integrating gyroscopes are used to deduce the celestial position from which a peak X-ray signal arises. On-orbit performance and thermal stability have been very good. Based on the first six weeks of quick look data, we have the following results: the location of an X-ray burst source within a globular cluster; the location of 4U1608-52, a unique object which shows bursting, transient, and steady X-ray behavior and is also an optical source; the location of the X-ray transient H1705-25, which provided Anglo-Australian astronomers the basis for an optical identification with a nova-like object; the location of the X-ray transient H1743-32 in the galactic center; and a precise measurement of the angular extent of the Crab Nebula.

IUE observations of hot stars - HZ43, BD +75 deg 325, NGC 6826, SS Cygni, Eta Carinae

During the commissioning phase of IUE observations were made of a selection of hot stars: the white dwarf HZ43, the hot subdwarf BD +75 deg 325, the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC 6826, the dwarf nova SS Cygni, and the peculiar object Eta Carinae. The observations were made in the low dispersion mode and the data have been reduced using a preliminary calibration. The results are presented and discussed for each object.

Si XIII and Si XIV line emission search with the ANS crystal spectrometer

The final results of the search for Si XIII and Si XIV line emission, using the ANS Bragg crystal spectrometer, are presented. No positive line detection was achieved in any of the measurements made on several types of cosmic object; i.e., a transient X-ray source, close binary systems, supernova remnants, GX sources, and clusters of galaxies. Three-sigma upper limits for discrete line emission from these objects are reported and compared with line strengths inferred from other proportional-counter and Bragg spectrometer data. The present upper limit of 1.0 eV for the equivalent width of a narrow Si XIV line emission from the X-ray nova A0620-00 is an order of magnitude lower than previous limits set by other experiments.

Hard X-rays from U Geminorum

The A-2 experiment on HEAO 1 has discovered that the dwarf nova U Geminorum can be a weak source of hard X-rays at optical maximum. During the outburst in October 1977, when a strong soft X-ray flux was discovered, a 2-10-keV flux was also observed. Evidence is presented that this flux appeared with the rise to optical maximum, about half a day before the soft X-rays appeared, and persisted about 2 days. During these first 2 days of the outburst the average flux was 2.4 x 10 to the -11th erg/sq cm per sec, corresponding to a luminosity of 2.8 x 10 to the 31st erg/s for a distance of 100 pc and an absorbed thin thermal spectrum with kT of about 5 keV. During optical minimum an OSO 8 upper limit implies a luminosity less than 10 to the 31st erg/s. Restrictions on models of U Geminorum are discussed.

Photometric and spectral properties of some T Tauri stars

Photometric and spectroscopic data have been obtained for selected T Tauri members of the Taurus-Aurigae cloud and the Orion complex. A correlation between the intensity ratio of calcium and hydrogen emission lines and the infrared excess at 3.5 microns is found for these stars, which indicates a causal relationship between 'chromospheric activity' and emission processes in the circumstellar shells. It is argued that a comparison with properties of well-studied novae could lead to a better understanding of the physical structure of T Tauri stars.

Landsat test of diffuse reflectance models for aquatic suspended solids measurement

Landsat radiance data were used to test mathematical models relating diffuse reflectance to aquatic suspended solids concentration. Digital CCT data for Landsat passes over the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia were analyzed on a General Electric Co. Image 100 multispectral analysis system. Three data sets were studied separately and together in all combinations with and without solar angle correction. Statistical analysis and chromaticity analysis show that a nonlinear relationship between Landsat radiance and suspended solids concentration is better at curve-fitting than a linear relationship. In particular, the quasi-single-scattering diffuse reflectance model developed by Gordon and coworkers is corroborated. The Gordon model applied to 33 points of MSS 5 data combined from three dates produced r = 0.98.

Changes in the rapid oscillations of AH Herculis during an outburst

High-speed photometric observations of the dwarf nova AH Her were made during the period June 5-12, 1978 at the NASA/University of Arizona 152-cm telescope of the Mount Lemmon Observatory. Observations have shown rapid oscillations beginning after the maximum of an outburst and remaining detectable for five consecutive days. Measurements of the period and amplitude of the oscillations and the intensity of the outburst are presented for each day.

Soft X-ray emission from the vicinity of MV Lyr

Evidence for a soft X-ray source at the location of the nova-like variable star MV Lyr is presented. Data from the smallest field of view of the A2 experiment on board HEAO-1 in the range 0.18 to 2.5 keV reveals a source of 0.18 to 0.43 keV emission, designated H1901+43, with a count rate corresponding to a flux of 4 x 10 to the -12th erg/sq cm per sec if a spectral temperature of 3 x 10 to the 5th K is assumed. The two-dimensional error box of H1901+43 is observed to contain the UX UMa star MV Lyr, which is suggested as the only obvious candidate for the source of X-ray emission, in accordance with the observations of soft X-ray emission from other cataclysmic variables, notably AM Her, U Gem and SS Cyg.

Multiple linear regression analysis

Program rapidly selects best-suited set of coefficients. User supplies only vectors of independent and dependent data and specifies confidence level required. Program uses stepwise statistical procedure for relating minimal set of variables to set of observations; final regression contains only most statistically significant coefficients. Program is written in FORTRAN IV for batch execution and has been implemented on NOVA 1200.

Helium runaways in white dwarfs

The long term evolution of an accreting carbon white dwarf was studied from the onset of accretion to the ignition of helium. The variations in the details of the helium shell flash examined with respect to variations in mass accretion rate. For intermediate rates the helium flash is potentially explosive whereas for high rates the shell flash is relatively weak. The results are discussed in the context of the long term evolution of novae.

TMS communications hardware. Volume 1: Computer interfaces

A prototpye coaxial cable bus communications system was designed to be used in the Trend Monitoring System (TMS) to connect intelligent graphics terminals (based around a Data General NOVA/3 computer) to a MODCOMP IV host minicomputer. The direct memory access (DMA) interfaces which were utilized for each of these computers are identified. It is shown that for the MODCOMP, an off-the-shell board was suitable, while for the NOVAs, custon interface circuitry was designed and implemented.

Positions and identifications of galactic X-ray sources

A catalog of compact Galactic X-ray sources with precise positions is presented together with a large bibliography. The catalog provides available X-ray, optical, and radio data for the 96 compact Galactic sources that have been identified and contains the most precise of the available optical, X-ray, or radio positions, the maximum and minimum published intensities, references to finding charts, and a comprehensive referenced list of X-ray, optical, and radio characteristics. The catalog also includes X-ray sources in the Magellanic clouds as well as all unidentified hard (greater than 2 keV) compact sources with an error radius of less than 60 arcsec and a Galactic latitude of less than 10 deg (absolute value). The sources list includes 14 X-ray Doppler or eclipsing binaries, seven or eight other X-ray pulsators, 23 transients or X-ray novae, 15 persistent bright bulge sources, seven X-ray sources associated with globular clusters, nine bursters, seven Galactic Center sources, and 18 other identified sources.

Twenty southern peculiar emission-line stars

Observational data for 20 southern stars having emission-line spectra that suggest a significant degree of mass ejection are given in order to present an atlas of their spectra and to give a quantitative description of their appearance during the 1961-62 epoch. Most of the stars are P Cygni stars; others include nova-like, peculiar Be, and symbiotic stars, as well as stellar planetary nebulae and emission-line binaries, all of whose spectra were obtained with the Newtonian two-prism Zeiss Spectrograph and the 74-inch reflector at Mount Stromlo Observatory. It is noted that among the P Cygni stars, there is a strong correlation between the a-e expansion velocity and the strength of Balmer emission, while in both the P Cygni and the Bep stars, there is positive dependence of Fe II and negative dependence of (Fe II) emission strengths on Balmer emission strength.

Discovery of the optical counterpart of the transient X-ray burster Centaurus X-4

The paper deals with the discovery and subsequent study of the optical counterpart to an X-ray nova which is almost certainly the historical transient Centaurus X-4, first discovered in 1969 and then dormant for the past decade. It is shown that Cen X-4 is a clear example of a soft, transient X-ray burster. The most important consequence of the connection between bursters and soft transients is the support it gives to the hypothesis that bursters are accreting neutron stars in binary systems. The observations support the hypothesis that at least some of the light comes from an accretion disk, and that X-ray heating plays an important role in the optical emission.

Helium runaways in white dwarfs

The long-term evolution of a carbon-accreting white dwarf (M = 0.5 solar mass) has been studied from the onset of accretion to the ignition of helium. The variations in the details of the helium-shell flash have been examined with respect to variations in mass accretion rate. For intermediate rates (10 to the -9th to 10 to the -8th solar mass/yr) the helium flash is potentially explosive, whereas for high rates (5 x 10 to the -8th solar mass/yr) the shell flash is relatively weak. The results are discussed in the context of the long-term evolution of novae.

Degenerate dwarfs in future hard X-ray experiments

The hard X-ray characteristics of weak sources (dwarf novae and AM Her-like), and strong steady sources, are discussed. HEAO A2 light curves for the greater than 2 keV flux from SS Cygni are presented, along with the pulse height spectrum and inferred incident spectrum. With regard to the high luminosity degenerate dwarf candidates, it is noted that only for Sco X-1 and Cyg X-2 has even optical evidence for binary periodicity been seen. The attributes of suitable X-ray experiments are reviewed, concerning the simultaneous observation of low energy X-rays, a large area for studying short flares, low background, and the need for both broad band spectral response and high resolution.
