An Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study of Key Thermodynamic Input Parameters for Computer Simulation of U-6Nb Solidification

The key to metallic fuel development is the fabrication of uranium metal and alloys into fuel forms. U-Nb alloys are one of the best candidates for a metallic fuel alloy with high-temperature strength sufficient to support the core, acceptable nuclear properties, good fabricability, and compatibility with usable coolant media. Melt processing has been a key component of the metallic fuel cycle, and process models require thermophysical parameters at elevated temperatures, particularly above the melting temperatures, regarding which experimental data are scarce, for accurate simulations and process development. By means of ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) quantum molecular dynamics (QMD), we have calculated the main thermophysical parameters—the density, thermal expansion coefficient, specific heat, thermal conductivity, melting temperature, latent heat of fusion, and viscosity—used in the modeling of the U-6 wt.% Nb alloy casting. The melting temperature of the U-6 wt.% Nb alloy at ambient pressure is obtained by means of QMD simulations using the Z-method. The ambient volume change and latent heat of melting of U-6 wt.% Nb are also derived from QMD simulations in conjunction with analytical fitting for the energy and pressure. The thermal conductivity for the solid U-Nb alloy is calculated from the semi-classical Boltzmann transport equation combined with an estimate of the electron relaxation time obtained from DFT simulations.

The light ion trough

Several fundamental characteristics of LIT (light ion trough), including evidence of diurnal variation as well as response to magnetic disturbances, are identified. These identifications were made using the Bennett radio frequency ion mass spectrometer onboard the OGO-6 from 1969 to 1970. It was shown that the LIT, rather than the total ionization trough, appears as a more meaningful indicator of the plasmapause. This makes the LIT a fundamental parameter for studies of the formation and maintenance of the plasmasphere.

ATS-5 signal characteristics at 15.3 GHz and related experiments at 15 and 35 GHz. Part 1: Basic features of the experiments and primary results

The results are presented of observations by the University of Texas of the 15.3 GHz experiment associated with the ATS-5 satellite and of related experiments designed to provide information on earth-satellite communication links at 15.3 and 31.65 GHz. The 15.3 GHz transmissions were observed at Austin, Texas over an eighteen month interval primarily during periods of rain. Measurements were also made at Mount Locke, near Fort Davis, Texas but only for a period of two months. Essentially continuous measurements were made at Austin, Texas of the sky temperature at 35 GHz looking in the direction of the ATS-5 satellite over an interval of four months. Point-to-point transmissions over the earth's surface at 15 and 35 GHz and various meteorological parameters were studied as possible means of predicting performance over a satellite-earth path.

Studies of engine-airframe integrated hypersonic vehicles

A parametric study of an integrated airframe and engine is presented for a hypersonic transport at an altitude of 70,000 feet and a free stream Mach number of 6. The engine considered is a subsonic combustion ramjet using conventional hydrocarbon fuels. The lift-to-drag ratio of the aircraft for two configurations, one with full capture and accelerated flight and the other allowing spillage of the leading shock and in unaccelerated flight, is studied. The parameters varied are the engine efficiencies, the angle of attack, the combustion rates, as well as the captured mass flow. Lift-to-drag ratios on the order of 6.5 are obtained.

Thermal relaxation of a two dimensional plasma in a dc magnetic field. Part 2: Numerical simulation

The thermal relaxation process for a spatially uniform two dimensional plasma in a uniform dc magnetic field is simulated numerically. Thermal relaxation times are defined in terms of the time necessary for the numerically computer Boltzman H-function to decrease through a given part of the distance to its minimum value. Dependence of relaxation time on two parameters is studied: number of particles per Debye square and ratio of gyrofrequency to plasma frequency.

Generation of Alfven waves in the magnetosphere by parametric interaction between whistlers

A theory is developed for the generation of Alfven waves by the mixing of whistler waves. Calculations are carried out for interaction in the magnetosphere where the whistlers fall in the VLF frequency range and the Alfven wave falls in the ULF(1-5 Hz) range. Typical amplitudes of 2-5 milligammas for the Alfven wave are calculated, and it is shown that these values might be increased by one order of magnitude through suitable variation of the experimental parameters. The study thereby develops a possible explanation for naturally occurring Pc 1 micropulsations and demonstrates the feasibility of artificial generation of such micropulsations by ground-launched whistlers.

Implementation of an experimental program to investigate the performance characteristics of OMEGA navigation

A theoretical formulation of differential and composite OMEGA error is presented to establish hypotheses about the functional relationships between various parameters and OMEGA navigational errors. Computer software developed to provide for extensive statistical analysis of the phase data is described. Results from the regression analysis used to conduct parameter sensitivity studies on differential OMEGA error tend to validate the theoretically based hypothesis concerning the relationship between uncorrected differential OMEGA error and receiver separation range and azimuth. Limited results of measurement of receiver repeatability error and line of position measurement error are also presented.

Mossbauer effect in dilute iron alloys

The effects of variable concentration, x, of Aluminum, Germanium, and Lanthanum atoms in Iron lattice on various Mossbauer parameters was studied. Dilute binary alloys of (Fe-Al), (Fe-Ge), (Fe-Al) containing up to x = 2 a/o of the dilute constituent were prepared in the form of ingots and rolled to a thickness of 0.001 in. Mossbauer spectra of these targets were then studied in transmission geometry to measure changes in the hyperfine field, peak widths isomer shifts as well as the ratio of the intensities of peaks (1,6) to the intensities of peaks (2,5). It was shown that the concept of effective hyperfine structure field in very dilute alloys provides a useful means of studying the effects of progressively increasing the solute concentration on host lattice properties.

Ion beam texturing

A microscopic surface texture is created by sputter etching a surface while simultaneously sputter depositing a lower sputter yield material onto the surface. A xenon ion beam source has been used to perform this texturing process on samples as large as three centimeters in diameter. Ion beam textured surface structures have been characterized with SEM photomicrographs for a large number of materials including Cu, Al, Si, Ti, Ni, Fe, Stainless steel, Au, and Ag. Surfaces have been textured using a variety of low sputter yield materials - Ta, Mo, Nb, and Ti. The initial stages of the texture creation have been documented, and the technique of ion beam sputter removal of any remaining deposited material has been studied. A number of other texturing parameters have been studied such as the variation of the texture with ion beam power, surface temperature, and the rate of texture growth with sputter etching time.

Forced vibrations of simply supported orthotropic sandwich plates

Force transmissibility, driving-point impedance, and transfer impedance of a simply supported rectangular orthotropic sandwich plate are investigated. The plate is driven by a sinusoidally varying point force either at the plate center or at any arbitrary location. The variation of force transmissibility and impedance with frequency, and the manner in which this is influenced by the various sandwich-plate parameters are studied and presented graphically.

Injection of coal by screw feed

The use of the screw feeder for injecting solids through a 20 to 30 psi barrier is common practice in the cement making industry. An analytical extrapolation of that design, accounting for pressure holding characteristics of a column of solids, shows that coal can be fed to zones at several hundred psi with minimal or no loss of gas. A series of curves showing the calculated pressure gradient through a moving column of solids is presented. Mean particle size, solids velocity, and column length are parameters. Further study of this system to evaluate practicality is recommended.
