Programmed multiplexing system simultaneously monitors several voltages

System consists of digital voltmeter with binary coded decimal output, programmer, multiplexer, and two to six gated digital displays. Maximum number of circuits monitored is determined by digital voltmeter, rate of change of parameter being measured and complexity of multiplexer design.

Mission definition study for Stanford relativity satellite. Volume 1: Systems and program

The objective of the relativity satellite mission is to perform an experiment in which a gyroscope in motion about the earth undergoes precession, presumably relativistic, with respect to the fixed stars. Performance of this experiment would clearly test the general theory of relativity and its various modifications. This is the only experiment suggested to date which would confirm the existence of motional drift as well. A mission is defined in which the measurement of the geodetic effect term to 0.2 arc sec/yr is achievable and the measurement of both geodetic and motional drift terms to an accuracy of 0.001 arc sec/yr may be possible. The design of the flying dewar satellite needed to maintain the experiment at cryogenic temperatures is discussed. The gyroscopes, magnetometer, and optical contacting method for dimensional stability of the experimental assembly are considered.

Liquid propellant thermal conditioning system test program

Results are presented from more than 1500 hours of testing on a liquid hydrogen thermal conditioning unit. Test parameters included: mixer and vent flow rates; tank size; ullage volume; pressurant gas; pressurant temperature; pressure level; and heat rate. Gaseous hydrogen and helium were used as pressurants. Analytical models were developed to correlate the test data and relate the performance to that anticipated in zero gravity. Experimental and theoretical results are presented which relate the variables controlling vapor condensation at a moving interface.

Image Display and Manipulation System (IDAMS) program documentation, Appendixes A-D

The IDAMS Processor is a package of task routines and support software that performs convolution filtering, image expansion, fast Fourier transformation, and other operations on a digital image tape. A unique task control card for that program, together with any necessary parameter cards, selects each processing technique to be applied to the input image. A variable number of tasks can be selected for execution by including the proper task and parameter cards in the input deck. An executive maintains control of the run; it initiates execution of each task in turn and handles any necessary error processing.

Generalized environmental control and life support system computer program (G189A) configuration control, phase 2

A method for updating and maintaining the G189A program library and documentation for all program users is provided. The effort also involves: (1) providing instruction and recommendations for the use and application of the program, (2) developing new subroutines and the logic required for new simulations, (3) supporting special analyses required by CSD, and (4) conduct studies to define and understand the interaction of the shuttle ECLSS and propose payload ECLSS and ECS designs.

NECAP: NASA's Energy-Cost Analysis Program. Part 1: User's manual

The NECAP is a sophisticated building design and energy analysis tool which has embodied within it all of the latest ASHRAE state-of-the-art techniques for performing thermal load calculation and energy usage predictions. It is a set of six individual computer programs which include: response factor program, data verification program, thermal load analysis program, variable temperature program, system and equipment simulation program, and owning and operating cost program. Each segment of NECAP is described, and instructions are set forth for preparing the required input data and for interpreting the resulting reports.

Earth orbital teleoperator mobility system evaluation program

The proximity translation and final docking of the space teleoperator evaluation vehicle (STEV) with large mass and small mass satellites was studied. Operations that may be performed by the STEV during the shuttle experiments are approximated.

Computer model for refinery operations with emphasis on jet fuel production. Volume 3: Detailed systems and programming documentation

The FORTRAN computing program predicts flow streams and material, energy, and economic balances of a typical petroleum refinery, with particular emphasis on production of aviation turbine fuels of varying end point and hydrogen content specifications. The program has a provision for shale oil and coal oil in addition to petroleum crudes. A case study feature permits dependent cases to be run for parametric or optimization studies by input of only the variables which are changed from the base case.

Ceramic regenerator systems development program

Ceramic regenerator cores are considered that can be used in passenger car gas turbine engines, Stirling engines, and industrial/truck gas turbine engines. Improved materials and design concepts aimed at reducing or eliminating chemical attack were placed on durability test in Ford 707 industrial gas turbine engines. The results of 19,600 hours of turbine engine durability testing are described. Two materials, aluminum silicate and magnesium aluminum silicate, continue to show promise toward achieving the durability objectives of this program. A regenerator core made from aluminum silicate showed minimal evidence of chemical attack damage after 6935 hours of engine test at 800 C and another showed little distress after 3510 hours at 982 C. Results obtained in ceramic material screening tests, aerothermodynamic performance tests, stress analysis, cost studies, and material specifications are also included.

Data simulation studies for field programs, satellite system tests, and regional weather prediction

In the present paper, the status of the Drexel/NCAR regional numerical weather forecast system is summarized to show the extent of our experience and our immediate requirements for data within the United States on scales smaller than rawinsonde spacing (approximately 300 km). Preliminary experiments are described, and data assimilation problems are examined. It is shown that data requirements, assimilation methods, and forecast sensitivity differ for regional and large-scale models. Forecast verification statistics suggest that middle-troposphere temperature is well known but relative humidity is not. In some cases, regional forecasts require much better humidity data than available from rawinsondes. Numerics, lateral boundary conditions, model physics, and computing power are adequate for near real-time experimental regional prediction with horizontal mesh sizes down to 35 km. Subsynoptic data and assimilation are the primary challenges facing regional NWP.

Air cargo: An Integrated Systems View. 1978 Summer Faculty Fellowship Program in Engineering Systems Design

The national air cargo system is analyzed and how it should be in 1990 is prescribed in order to operate successfully through 2015; that is through one equipment cycle. Elements of the system which are largely under control of the airlines and the aircraft manufacturers are discussed. The discussion deals with aircraft, networks, facilities, and procedures. The regulations which govern the movement of air freight are considered. The larger public policy interests which must be served by the kind of system proposed, the air cargo integrated system (ACIS), are addressed. The possible social, economical, political, and environment impacts of the system are considered. Recommendations are also given.

Safety considerations in the design and operation of large wind turbines

The engineering and safety techniques used to assure the reliable and safe operation of large wind turbine generators utilizing the Mod 2 Wind Turbine System Program as an example is described. The techniques involve a careful definition of the wind turbine's natural and operating environments, use of proven structural design criteria and analysis techniques, an evaluation of potential failure modes and hazards, and use of a fail safe and redundant component engineering philosophy. The role of an effective quality assurance program, tailored to specific hardware criticality, and the checkout and validation program developed to assure system integrity are described.
