Coal/rock interface detection by sensitized pick, part A

In order to increase the operating margins of the detector for safe, reliable operation under difficult in-mine conditions the transmitted signal strength was increased to provide additional signal margin for in-mine conditions and the transmitter section was redesigned to reduce frequency pulling of the transmitter frequency with variations in antenna load. The linearity of the pick load SCO signal with true pick load was increased, and hysteresis effects were minimized. The sensitized pick hardware was ruggedized for rough inmine use. The sensitized pick and telemetry system provided excellent, high quality signals proportional to cutting load under all conditions experienced during testing.

A magnetospheric signature of some F layer positive storms

Calculations of electron density distributions in the global thermosphere-ionosphere system perturbed by high-latitude thermospheric heating are presented which indicate a link between the heating and magnetospheric plasma disturbances near the equator. The calculations were made using a self-consistent model of the global sunlit thermosphere-ionosphere system describing the evolution of equatorial plasma disturbances. The heat input is found to cause electron density enhancements that propagate along magnetic field lines from the F2 maximum over mid-latitudes to the equator in the magnetosphere and which correspond to the positive phase of an F layer storm. The positive phase is shown to be generated by the induction of equatorward winds that raise the mid-latitude F layer through momentum transfer from neutral atoms to ionospheric ions, which ions pull electrons with them. Model results are used to identify plasma signatures of equatorward winds and an intensified magnetospheric electric field in Explorer 45 and Arial 4 measurements taken during the positive phase of an F layer storm.

Mutiple Czochralski growth of silicon crystals from a single crucible

An apparatus for the Czochralski growth of silicon crystals is presented which is capable of producing multiple ingots from a single crucible. The growth chamber features a refillable crucible with a water-cooled, vacuum-tight isolation valve located between the pull chamber and the growth furnace tank which allows the melt crucible to always be at vacuum or low argon pressure when retrieving crystal or introducing recharge polysilicon feed stock. The grower can thus be recharged to obtain 100 kg of silicon crystal ingots from one crucible, and may accommodate crucibles up to 35 cm in diameter. Evaluation of the impurity contents and I-V characteristics of solar cells fabricated from seven ingots grown from two crucibles reveals a small but consistent decrease in cell efficiency from 10.4% to 9.6% from the first to the fourth ingot made in a single run, which is explained by impurity build-up in the residual melt. The crystal grower thus may offer economic benefits through the extension of crucible lifetime and the reduction of furnace downtime.

Analysis of forced convection heat flow effects in horizontal ribbon growth from the melt

A heat transport analysis which considers forced convective fluid flow induced by the motion of a continuous solid ribbon over a melt has been done for horizontal ribbon growth. A model has been developed which treats both 'active' and 'passive' cooling at the ribbon surface. The results show that heat flow from the melt requires active cooling in the region of the leading growth edge or growth tip. Steady-state liquid-solid interface shape is analyzed and numerical results are given for steady-state pulling of silicon ribbon.

Applications of a new mass-driver concept

A description of the operating principles and requirements of a novel mass-driver concept is presented. The design obtains acceleration of payload bucket coils by means of transverse focussing from strong, off-axis restoring forces that are produced by drive coils operating in a 'pull-only' mode. The concept offers the unprecedented possibility of operating high-performance mass-drivers entirely within the limitations of existing commercial switching devices, such as silicon-controlled rectifiers, spark gaps, vacuum-triggered arcs or vacuum mechanical switches. Representative applications of the concept described are: (1) a large-diameter magnetic lunar launcher for payloads having autonomous maneuvering; (2) an intermediate-diameter launcher with long operational life; and (3) a reaction engine for orbit transfer of large, massive objects.

Lock for Gantry Trolley

Single operator on ground controls trolley-locking mechanism on portable gantry. Mechanism prevents trolley and load from moving along track when gantry is wheeled from one location to another. A downward pull on chain withdraws brakeshoes from trolley wheels. When operator releases chain, brakeshoes reengage to wheels.

Tangleproof Rotary Electrical Coupling

New rotary coupling connects large number of electrical cables to turntable without stressing cables or tangling them. Device accommodates 246 cables containing total of 758 conductors and allows turntable to rotate through arc of 320 degrees. At extremes of rotation, cables are loose enough that they are not pulled taut and overstressed. At halfway point, cables are not so loose that they become entangled.

Parachute Line Hook Includes Integral Loop Expander

Parachute packing simplified with modified line hook. One person packs parachutes for test recovery vehicles faster than previously two-person team. New line hook includes expander that opens up two locking loops so parachute lines are pulled through them. Parachutes are packed at high pressure to be compressed into limited space available in test vehicles.

Wipe Melt for InP Seed Substrate

Seed substrate pulled under InGaAsP wipe melt at temperature of 650 degrees C for approximately 15 to 60 seconds. After pullthrough and meltback, surface has high smoothness and luster without meniscus lines, exaggerated erosion, pits, and pearls characteristic of other wipe melts. Layer-to-substrate interface structure is more planar and of better quality. New combination of elements leaves smooth high luster surface.

Growing Silicon Ribbon Horizontally

Solid ribbon of silicon pulled horizontally over lip of crucible. As heat leaves silicon by radiation, conduction, and convections, surface layer solidifies from liquid. Horizontal growth of ribbon offers several advantages over vertical growth. It is faster--possibly 1 to 2 centimeters per second-and is done without using drawing dies, source of contamination in vertical growth.

Heat Flow in Horizontal Ribbon Growth

Recent theoretical study reveals some important effects of heat flow in horizontal ribbon growth. Particular attention is paid to heat flow due to laminar convection current in melt induced by horizontal motion of ribbonshaped semiconductor crystal being pulled from melt. Analysis focuses on conditions required for stable growth.

Power converter

A dc-to-dc converter employs four transistor switches in a bridge to chop dc power from a source, and a voltage multiplying diode rectifying ladder network to rectify and filter the chopped dc power for delivery to a load. The bridge switches are cross coupled in order for diagonally opposite pairs to turn on and off together using RC networks for the cross coupling to achieve the mode of operation of a free running multivibrator, and the diode rectifying ladder is configured to operate in a push-pull mode driven from opposite sides of the multivibrator outputs of the ridge switches. The four transistor switches provide a square-wave output voltage which as a peak-to-peak amplitude that is twice the input dc voltage, and is thus useful as a dc-to-ac inverter.

Direct observation of interface instability during crystal growth

The general aim of this investigation was to study interface stability and solute segregation phenomena during crystallization of a model system. Emphasis was to be placed on direct observational studies partly because this offered the possibility at a later stage of performing related experiments under substantially convection-free conditions in the space shuttle. The major achievements described in this report are: (1) the development of a new model system for fundamental studies of crystal growth from the melt and the measurement of a range of material parameters necessary for comparison of experiment with theory. (2) The introduction of a new method of measuring segregation coefficient using absorption of a laser beam by the liquid phase. (3) The comparison of segregation in crystals grown by gradient freezing and by pulling from the melt. (4) The introduction into the theory of solute segregation of an interface field term and comparison with experiment. (5) The introduction of the interface field term into the theories of constitutional supercooling and morphological stability and assessment of its importance.
