The Future of LANSCE [Slides]

LANSCE is a NNSA Center for Materials and Nuclear Research. An aging stockpile presents unique challenges in materials and nuclear science. The grand challenge of a predictive materials capability includes design to manufacture and born certified. This requires capability to study manufacture to structure relationships and capability to study structure to performance relationships. LANSCE has the capabilities needed for this mission. We leverage our capability to provide broader benefit to the Nation including production of medical isotopes, industrial irradiation facility for electronics certification, and fundamental materials and physics research. The LANSCE linear accelerator is nearly 50 years old. The severity of maintenance issues is increasing. We must reinvest in LANSCE to ensure mission delivery into the future. We must develop new capability to be responsive to changing mission needs. Ultimately this will require a Dynamic Mesoscale Materials Science Capability. Now we must develop a pathway to MaRIE that ensures continued operation of LANSCE.

The Nuclear Data Interface (NDI) [Slides]

The Nuclear Data Interface (NDI) can be described as: Standardized methodology for accessing and manipulating nuclear data; An API that accesses nuclear data while hiding underlying details from the user; Created to enable codes to access nuclear data without knowledge of a specific library format, content, or location; Both a code and ASCII data format (just to be confusing); Not continuous energy (that’s what NDATK is for).

TA55-PMDS Programmatic Maintenance [Slides]

DOE Order 433.1B states: “The contractor must maintain real property assets in a manner that promotes operational safety, worker health, environmental compliance, property preservation and cost-effectiveness while meeting the program mission”. P950 Conduct of Maintenance serves as LANL’s Nuclear Maintenance Management Program specific to M/L 1 and M/L 2 SSC. PA-AP-01108 Maintenance Requirements for Programmatic Equipment defines the process for determining maintenance requirements, as defined in a maintenance plan, for all programmatic equipment owned by the Associate Directorate for Plutonium Science and Manufacturing (ADPSM) utilizing a formal, graded approach to maximize the reliability of permanently-installed programmatic equipment that does not perform a safety function. It bridges the gap between P950 and program equipment.
