Results of recent NASA studies on spin resistance

Some of the factors which contribute to good stall/spin characteristics of a current fighter configuration indicate that the design of airframe components for inherent spin resistance is very configuration dependent and that few generalizations can be made. Secondary design features, such as fuselage forebody shape, can have significant effects on stability characteristics at high angles of attack. Recent piloted simulator studies and airplane flight tests have indicated that current automatic control systems can be tailored so as to provide a high degree of spin resistance for some configurations without restrictions to maneuverability. Such systems result in greatly increased pilot confidence and increased tactical effectiveness.

On the use of Pade approximants to represent unsteady aerodynamic loads for arbitrarily small motions of wings

The general behavior of unsteady airloads in the frequency domain is explained. Based on this, a systematic procedure is described whereby the airloads, produced by completely arbitrary, small, time-dependent motions of a thin lifting surface in an airstream, can be predicted. This scheme employs as raw materials any of the unsteady linearized theories that have been mechanized for simple harmonic oscillations. Each desired aerodynamic transfer function is approximated by means of an appropriate Pade approximant, that is, a rational function of finite degree polynomials in the Laplace transform variable. Although these approximations have many uses, they are proving especially valuable in the design of automatic control systems intended to modify aeroelastic behavior.

An automated atmospheric sampling system operating on 747 airliners

An air sampling system that automatically measures the temporal and spatial distribution of particulate and gaseous constituents of the atmosphere is collecting data on commercial air routes covering the world. Measurements are made in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (6 to 12 km) of constituents related to aircraft engine emissions and other pollutants. Aircraft operated by different airlines sample air at latitudes from the Arctic to Australia. This unique system includes specialized instrumentation, a special air inlet probe for sampling outside air, a computerized automatic control, and a data acquisition system. Air constituent and related flight data are tape recorded in flight for later computer processing on the ground.

Experiments in the correction of mirror figures via force deformation

The prospect of placing large astronomical telescopes in earth orbit, free of atmospheric degradations, has created a need for ultrahigh-quality large optics. Large mirrors, several meters in diameter, must be produced and maintained with a surface quality that is an order of magnitude better than that typically used in terrestrial telescopes. This paper describes the experimental development of automatic control techniques for correcting optical surfaces to a precision of 0.01 microns rms. The approach consists of interferometrically measuring the mirror figure error and then, using servomechanisms, push or pull on the back surface of the mirror to reform the optical surface

Three-level sampler having automated thresholds

A three-level sampler is described that has its thresholds controlled automatically so as to track changes in the statistics of the random process being sampled. In particular, the mean value is removed and the ratio of the standard deviation of the random process to the threshold is maintained constant. The system is configured in such a manner that slow drifts in the level comparators and digital-to-analog converters are also removed. The ratio of the standard deviation to threshold level may be chosen within the constraints of the ratios of two integers N and M. These may be chosen to minimize the quantizing noise of the sampled process.

Results of recent NASA studies on automatic spin prevention for fighter aircraft

A broad based research program was developed to eliminate or minimize inadvertent spins for advanced military aircraft. Recent piloted simulator studies and airplane flight tests have demonstrated that the automatic control systems in use on current fighters can be tailored to provide a high degree of spin resistance for some configurations without restrictions to maneuverability. Such systems result in greatly increased tactical effectiveness, safety, and pilot confidence.

Chemical vapor deposition growth

A laboratory type CVD reactor system with a vertical deposition chamber and sample pedestal heated by an external RF coil has been extensively modified by installation of mass flow controllers, automatic process sequence timers, and special bellows-sealed air-operated valves for overall improved performance. Various film characterization procedures, including classical metallography, SEM analyses, X ray diffraction analyses, surface profilometry, and electrical measurements (resistivity, carrier concentration, mobility, spreading resistance profiles, and minority-carrier lifetime by the C-V-t method) area used to correlate Si sheet properties with CVD parameters and substrate properties. Evaluation procedures and measurements are given. Experimental solar cell structures were made both in epitaxial Si sheet (on sapphire substrates) and in polycrystalline material on alumina substrates, the former to provide an indication of what might be an upper limit on performance of the latter. Preliminary results are given, as obtained in cell structures not specially designed to allow for the unique properties of the sheet material, and fabricated in material known to be far from optimum for photovoltaic performance. Low power conversion efficiencies have been obtained in the epitaxial as well as the polycrystalline Si sheet.

Automatic flight performance of a transport airplane on complex microwave landing system paths

During this demonstration the microwave landing system was utilized to provide the terminal configured vehicle B-737 airplane with guidance for automatic control on complex, curved descending paths with precision turns into short final approaches terminating in landing and roll-out, even when subjected to strong and gusty tail- and cross-wind components and severe wind shear. The data collected from more than fifty approach flights during the demonstration provided an opportunity to analyze airplane flight performance on a statistical basis rather than on a single flight record basis as is customarily done with limited data replication. Mean and standard deviation data are presented for approach flight path tracking parameters. In addition, the adverse wind conditions encountered during these flights are described using three-dimensional wind vector characteristics computed from the extensive on-board sensor data.

Automatic flight performance of a transport airplane on complex microwave landing system paths

Essential characteristics of the U.S. microwave landing system (MLS) and the TCV B-737 aircraft used in flight demonstrations are described, with special emphasis on the analysis of the approach paths. MLS is used to provide the aircraft with guidance for automatic control on complex, curved descending paths with precision turns into short final approaches terminating in landing and rollout, even when subjected to strong and gusty tail- and cross-wind components and severe wind shear. The tracking performance achieved on these paths under MLS guidance is examined in detail, and the wind environment where the flights are conducted are quantified. The flights demonstrate the utility of the wide-area coverage of MLS for curved, descending paths commencing with a standard RNAV approach into a terminal area and continuation of this approach throughout the MLS coverage and onto the runway.

Investigation of aircraft landing in variable wind fields

A digital simulation study is reported of the effects of gusts and wind shear on the approach and landing of aircraft. The gusts and wind shear are primarily those associated with wind fields created by surface wind passing around bluff geometries characteristic of buildings. Also, flight through a simple model of a thunderstorm is investigated. A two-dimensional model of aircraft motion was represented by a set of nonlinear equations which accounted for both spatial and temporal variations of winds. The landings of aircraft with the characteristics of a DC-8 and a DHC-6 were digitally simulated under different wind conditions with fixed and automatic controls. The resulting deviations in touchdown points and the controls that are required to maintain the desired flight path are presented. The presence of large bluff objects, such as buildings in the flight path is shown to have considerable effect on aircraft landings.

Electrotransport purification of thorium under low pressure conditions

It was demonstrated that the ultrapurification of refractory metals by electrotransport refining could best be accomplished in the noncontaminating environment of an orbiting low density materials laboratory such as the Molecular Shield Device. Refining experiments were performed at 2 x 10 to the -12th Torr which resulted in the preparation of small quantities of the World's purest thorium metal. The microgravity occurring in orbit was simulated electromagnetically and shown to be advantageous in eliminating grain-sliding caused by the plastic deformation of the sample at high temperature. The electrotransport sample assembly was tested in several environments including simulated solar irradiation, coldness and darkness and under various pressure conditions. Ultrapure single crystals of alpha thorium were also prepared and characterized. Laboratory electronics for the experiment were developed and a totally automatic control system was used to heat the specimens.

Pilot-aircraft system response to wind shear

The nonlinear aircraft motion and automatic control computer model of Frost and Reddy has been expanded to incorporate the human pilot into simulations of aircraft response to wind shear. Fixed-stick, autopilot, and manned computer simulations are made with an aircraft having characteristics of a Queen Air (small commuter-type aircraft) flown through longitudinal winds measured by a Doppler radar beamed along the glide slope during the SESAME '79 experiments in Oklahoma. Simulations are also made flying a model Boeing 727 through sinusoidal head wind to tail wind shears at the phugoid frequency to evaluate the response of manned aircraft in thunderstorm wind environments.
