Future space transportation requirements for the management of orbital debris

Launch vehicle upper stages continue to contribute to future orbital debris scenarios whenever they undergo explosive propulsion system failures, as well as by remaining on orbit as potential collision targets for smaller orbiting bodies. No active measures have been instituted to date in order to remove nonfunctional satellites or spent rocket stages from earth orbit; they are nevertheless conceivable, and classifiable as (1) orbital-maneuvering retrieval; (2) self-disposal; and (3) propulsive deorbit or atmospheric drag augmentation. Illustrative cases and parametric assessments of these methods' feasibility and cost are presented.

The Initial Blood Storage Experiment - The spaceflight hardware program

The Initial Blood Storage Experiment (IBSE) was conceived to investigate the effects of microgravity on the formed elements of human blood. The experiment flew on the January 1986, 61-C mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The experiment hardware was designed to provide a closely controlled temperature and air flow environment for all blood samples. During the mission, two IBSE modules were on board the orbiter and an identical set of hardware and blood samples were maintained on earth as a control. This paper describes the development and performance of the IBSE hardware which was converted from a conceptual design to an on-orbit, man-rated, mid-deck locker experiment in 17 months.

Designing ceramic components with the CARES computer program

NASA-Lewis has developed a public-domain computer program, designated 'Ceramic Analysis and Reliability Evaluation of Structures' (CARES) for calculating the fast-fracture reliability of macroscopically isotropic ceramic components subjected to the complex thermomechanical loadings typical of heat engines. The design methodology employed by CARES encompasses linear elastic fracture mechanics theory, extreme value statistics, and material microstructures; component integrity is conceived as a function of the entire field solution of the stresses, rather than being based solely on the most highly stressed point.

Tank Pressure Control Experiment - A low-g mixing investigation

The Tank Pressure Control Experiment (TPCE) was conceived to meet the need for an aspect of cryogenic fluid management technology that is critical to several future national space missions: control of cryogenic storage tank pressures by active mixing. In-space testing is the only means of obtaining the fluid dynamic data necessary to develop and test predictive models of mixing. These models, when validated, will allow future cryogenic systems to be designed with more efficient and reliable pressure control systems. The objectives of the TPCE project are to characterize the fluid dynamics of jet-induced mixing in low gravity, evaluate the validity of empirical models and correlations, and provide data for use in developing and validating computational fluid dynamic models. This paper discusses prior studies of low-g mixing, the objectives and benefits of TPCE, the design and status of the payload, and preliminary results obtained from low-g aircraft testing.

Multistage Estimation Of Frequency And Phase

Conceptual two-stage software scheme serves as prototype of multistage scheme for digital estimation of phase, frequency, and rate of change of frequency ("Doppler rate") of possibly phase-modulated received sinusoidal signal in communication system in which transmitter and/or receiver traveling rapidly, accelerating, and/or jerking severely. Each additional stage of multistage scheme provides increasingly refined estimate of frequency and phase of signal. Conceived for use in estimating parameters of signals from spacecraft and high dynamic GPS signal parameters, also applicable, to terrestrial stationary/mobile (e.g., cellular radio) and land-mobile/satellite communication systems.

Improving Sparse-Aperture Interferometric Radiometry

Proposed method for designing spatial arrangement of antennas of sparse-aperture interferometric radiometry (SAIR) system increases spatial resolution of images produced by system. Technique involves cross-correlation of signals received by pairs of small antennas at different locations. Includes ring array of "flood-beam" antennas. Signals from all possible pairs of antennas cross-correlated simultaneously. Diameter of ring determines spatial resolution of image, and distribution of antennas around ring determines sampling characteristics. Conceived to improve proposed remote-sensing SAIR system placed in geosynchronous orbit; also applied to other SAIR systems intended to stare at stationary targets for relatively long times.

Docking System With Video Feedback

Video-sensor/electronic-feedback control system being developed to provide automatic control of final stage of approach of active vehicle to passive vehicle or object. No communication between vehicles necessary. Docking target, mounted on post on passive vehicle, has three reflective dots, positions of which measured in image to determine relative position and orientation of target and vehicle. Control channels process video-sensor feedback into motion-control signals (thrustor commands in spacecraft or motor commands in robot). Conceived for use aboard chasing spacecraft to control its maneuvers in docking with chased spacecraft, concept also useful in controlling coupling of aircraft in flight or vessels on water or in controlling approach of robot to object to be manipulated.

Rotary Coupling Extends Life Of Hose

Oscillating rotary coupling enables hose to withstand bending oscillations without leakage. Intended for use where hose connects to stationary structure at one end and to oscillating structure on other end. Coupling, (a sun-and-planetary pulley system), eliminates fatigue stress at fixed end. Pulley coupling requires less hose than conventional helical-wrap couplings, and its weight, pressure drop, heat loss or gain, and fluid contents also less. Conceived for use on Space Station to transfer vapors across rotary joints to directional radiators for condensation or to transfer liquids to gimballed payloads for evaporation. On Earth, used to carry working fluids to and from evaporative solar collectors following path of Sun.
