Space tug economic analysis study. Volume 2: Tug concepts analysis. Part 1: Overall approach and data generation

An economic analysis of space tug operations is presented. The subjects discussed are: (1) data base for orbit injection stages, (2) data base for reusable space tug, (3) performance equations, (4) data integration and interpretation, (5) tug performance and mission model accomodation, (6) total program cost, (7) payload analysis, (8) computer software, and (9) comparison of tug concepts.

Dynamic Docking Test System (DDTS) active table computer program NASA Advanced Docking System (NADS)

A computer program was developed to describe the three-dimensional motion of the Dynamic Docking Test System active table. The input consists of inertia and geometry data, actuator structural data, forcing function data, hydraulics data, servo electronics data, and integration control data. The output consists of table responses, actuator bending responses, and actuator responses.

Graphics Flutter Analysis Methods, an interactive computing system at Lockheed-California Company

An interactive computer graphics system, Graphics Flutter Analysis Methods (GFAM), was developed to complement FAMAS, a matrix-oriented batch computing system, and other computer programs in performing complex numerical calculations using a fully integrated data management system. GFAM has many of the matrix operation capabilities found in FAMAS, but on a smaller scale, and is utilized when the analysis requires a high degree of interaction between the engineer and computer, and schedule constraints exclude the use of batch entry programs. Applications of GFAM to a variety of preliminary design, development design, and project modification programs suggest that interactive flutter analysis using matrix representations is a feasible and cost effective computing tool.

Data analysis for Skylab proton spectrometer

The data from a proton spectrometer flown aboard Skylab is examined. The instrument is sensitive to protons in the energy range 18 to 400 MeV. A partial failure of the spectrometer restricted spectral analysis to two energy bands, 18 to 27 MeV and 27 to 400 MeV. The directional data showed that a Gaussian angular distribution parameter of at least 70 degrees is required for the low energy band and at least 40 degrees for the high energy band. The data, integrated over angle, indicate that the AP3 model extrapolated down to 18-27 MeV is high by factors of 2 to 5 over most of the B-L space mapped. In the 27 to 400 MeV range, the AP3 model is 20 to 100 percent low at low and high values of L, and is high at medium L values in the B-L space mapped.

Development of a microwave multilateration system for VTOL landing guidance

An experimental microwave multilateration system has been developed by NASA to provide highly accurate position and velocity measurements during the approach and landing phase of VTOL aircraft. The system uses an angle modulated ranging signal to provide both range and range rate measurements between an aircraft transponder and multiple ground stations. Range and range rate measurements are converted to coordinate measurements, and the coordinate information is transmitted via an integral data link to the aircraft. This paper describes the development of the multilateration system and the associated digital signal processing techniques. Advantages and disadvantages of several processing techniques are discussed. The operation and accuracy of the system as determined from both analytical studies and flight experiments will be described.

A laser tomographic investigation of liquid fuel sprays

A light scattering technique is combined with a tomographic transformation to convert line of sight integrated data, measured in sprays, to measurements of droplet size and concentration in volume elements within the spray. The technique is developed and assessed by systematic experiments in axisymmetric sprays generated by twin-fluid atomisers. The good agreement found shows that, provided certain conditions are satisfied by the local spray structure, the technique provides information on spray structure, similar in detail and extent to that derived by photography, but with reduced experimental time. The technique is applied to an investigation of a kerosene spray vaporizing in a hot gas stream.

Demonstration Advanced Avionics System (DAAS) functional description

A comprehensive set of general aviation avionics were defined for integration into an advanced hardware mechanization for demonstration in a Cessna 402B aircraft. Block diagrams are shown and system and computer architecture as well as significant hardware elements are described. The multifunction integrated data control center and electronic horizontal situation indicator are discussed. The functions that the DAAS will perform are examined. This function definition is the basis for the DAAS hardware and software design.

Review of AIDS development

The operation and implementation of the aircraft integrated data system AIDS are described. The system is described as an engineering tool with strong emphasis on analysis of recorded information. The AIDS is primarily directed to the monitoring of parameters related to: the safety of the flight; the performance of the aircraft; the performance of the flight guidance system; and the performance and condition of the engines. The system provide short term trend analysis on a trend chart that is updated by the flight engineer on every flight that lasts more than 4 flight hours. Engine data prints are automatically presented during take-off and in the case of limit excedance, e.g., the print shows an automatically reported impending hotstarts on engine nr. 1. Other significant features are reported.

Engine condition monitoring: CF6 family 60's through the 80's

The on condition program is described in terms of its effectiveness as a maintenance tool both at the line station as well as at home base by the early detection of engine faults, erroneous instrumentation signals and by verification of engine health. The system encompasses all known methods from manual procedures to the fully automated airborne integrated data system.

Registration and rectification needs of geology

Geologic applications of remotely sensed imaging encompass five areas of interest. The five areas include: (1) enhancement and analysis of individual images; (2) work with small area mosaics of imagery which have been map projection rectified to individual quadrangles; (3) development of large area mosaics of multiple images for several counties or states; (4) registration of multitemporal images; and (5) data integration from several sensors and map sources. Examples for each of these types of applications are summarized.

Executive and communications services to support the IPAD environment

The principal purposes of the prototype executive software are to provide a system independent interface to the underlying host system and to allow for extension to full IPAD executive services as described in the preliminary design. A basic set of functions is included in the prototype to meet the requirements of the other components of the prototype, principally IPID, the IPAD data management system. The functions were chosen so that they would be readily built on any of the proposed host systems with minimal redesign and execution overhead. The functions fall into five categories: access to host data, access to data files, access to communication services, data transformation, and instrumentation for performance measurement. Communication services provide message delivery between processes in a network of heterogeneous computers. Data transformation services and communication services ensure data type validity and data integrity of messages exchanged between processes.

Nimbus-Earth radiation budget instrument analysis

The Wide Field Of View (WFOV) Earth Flux Channels of the Nimbus Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) instrument are studied with the objective of improving the understanding and confidence in the data. Laboratory tests on flight space Earth flux subassemblies followed by a set of in flight verification procedures are examined to see if the laboratory derived correction factors produced consistent results. Intercomparisons between the WFOV data and integrated scanner data as well as other truth are used in these verificaton procedures. The main source of errors are temperature and temperature gradient related offsets. The findings led to construction of a model for the short wave WFOV channel which use instrument temperatures and temperature differences to predict or establish offsets which need to be applied to data reduction algorithms for maximum final data product accuracy.

Space simulation in the next 20 years

This is a brief overview of logically expected advancements in the area of space simulation over the next twenty years. Current NASA Space Shuttle simulations will be upgraded to support more complex payload and on-orbit tasks. This includes the ability to integrate various remote ground facilities with a real time space mission simulator and an expanded use of efficient part-task simulations. Software compatibilities between simulators will increase and each simulator will have a more combined training and engineering role. Software development processors will be increasingly internetted to an integrated data processing system.

Noiseless coding for the Gamma Ray spectrometer

The payload of several future unmanned space missions will include a sophisticated gamma ray spectrometer. Severely constrained data rates during certain portions of these missions could limit the possible science return from this instrument. This report investigates the application of universal noiseless coding techniques to represent gamma ray spectrometer data more efficiently without any loss in data integrity. Performance results demonstrate compression factors from 2.5:1 to 20:1 in comparison to a standard representation. Feasibility was also demonstrated by implementing a microprocessor breadboard coder/decoder using an Intel 8086 processor.

Assembling the basic structure

Specific tasks to be undertaken by the NASA-Johnson, Phase B management of the manned Space Station are described. These tasks include the analysis, definition, and design of the following systems: assembly trusses and structures; interconnection modules; airlock system; heat rejection and transport; guidance, navigation and control systems; mechanical systems; resource integration; data management; communication and tracking; habitat for the crew; hardware need for cost-effective EVA; interface and berthing for compatible space-transportation system; and software development environment. The components, functions, and the key design goals of each of these systems are discussed.

Automation of review/approval cycle of MCAUTO CAD/CAM generated drawings and documents

The review/approval of MCAUTO/UNIGRAPHICS CAD/CAM generated drawings and documents is done through routing of hard copies of drawings and memos via mail, a process both time consuming and expensive. It is proposed that a set of procedures and the required software tools be designed for transmission, revision, and signing-off of such documents via electronic data transfer, while maintaining a sufficient degree of data integrity and individual security. A main resistance to such a technique will be the limited size of the display screen (19 inch class) and infrequent layer switching with the attendant time delay during the process of reviewing the drawing. Such opposition should diminish as the users become familiar with the hardwares and its operation. It is suggested that user profiles be set so that the protection class list of the originator of the drawing include at least one common class with each of the individuals who will be involved in the Revision/Approval cycle. In this way the originator will be able to tranfer a file for their review and also be able to copy back the file to make the necessary permanent changes. Individual security is maintained by restricted access to signature files and by restricting the list of individuals who will be authorized to sign off. This is accomplished through two software tools:LAYCOPY and SIGN. It is felt that these proposed procedures and techniques will adequately maintain both the file integrity and individual security during Review/Approval Cycle of MCAUTO generated drawings without the need for hardcopy routing.

International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment, Fourth Thematic Conference: Remote Sensing for Exploration Geology, San Francisco, CA, April 1-4, 1985, Proceedings. Volumes 1 & 2

State of the art applications of remote sensing in geological exploration programs are discussed along with research and development activities aimed at increasing the future capabilities of this technology for exploration geology. The topics considered include: technical issues in the state of the art; regional exploration models; remote sensing applications for hydrocarbon exploration; commercialization of remote sensing satellites; and data integration. Also addressed are: remote sensing applications for mineral exploration; geobotanical and environmental remote sensing; image processing techniques and applications; advanced sensors, radar, and airborne systems; and engineering, logistics, and marine applications.
