Foundational Dataset for Developing Large-Sample Stream Temperature Models in the Conterminous United States

This dataset provides inputs, evaluation results, and trained weights from a large-sample Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model designed to predict daily stream temperatures across unregulated river reaches in the conterminous United States (CONUS). It includes dynamic meteorological and hydrologic forcings, static physiographic attributes, and model outputs from cross-validation experiments spanning 300 basins. It supports reproducible modeling, direct application for new basins, and provides data suitable for integration with reservoir and river simulations under current and future climates. It contains two .zip files described below · RQ-AI_runs.zip: Model outputs from 10-fold cross-validation experiments, including observed and predicted daily stream temperatures, along with test performance metrics for water years 2017–2019. Two versions are included: 1. Model trained and validated using subbasin-area weighted dynamic features. 2. Model trained and validated using whole-basin area weighted dynamic features. · RQ-AI_inputs.zip: Collection of all formatted dynamic and static predictor datasets (meteorological, hydrologic, and physiographic features) used in model training and analysis. Detailed instructions and data structure is held at the following GitLab repository: https://code.ornl.gov/tempwise/training.

A Full-Stack Exploration of Language-Based Parallelism in Fortran 2023

This poster explores native parallel features in Fortran 2023 through the lens of supporting applications with libraries, compilers, and parallel runtimes. The language revision informally named Fortran 2008 introduced parallelism in the form of Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) execution with two broad feature sets: (1) loop-level parallelism via do concurrent and (2) a Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) comprised of distributed “coarray” data structures. Fortran’s native parallelism has demonstrated high performance [1] and reduced the burden of inserting what sometimes amounts to more directives than code. Several compilers support both feature sets, typically by translating do concurrent into serial do loops annotated by parallel directives and by translating SPMD/PGAS features into direct calls to a communication library. Our research focuses primarily on two questions: (1) can the compiler’s parallel runtime library be developed in the language being compiled (Fortran) and (2) can we define an interface to the runtime that liberates compilers from being hardwired to one runtime and vice versa. We are answering these questions by developing the Parallel Runtime Interface for Fortran (PRIF) [2] and the Co-Array Fortran Framework of Efficient Interfaces to Network Environments (Caffeine) [3]. Caffeine is initially targeting adoption by LLVM Flang, a new open-source Fortran compiler developed by a broad community in industry, academia, and government labs. We are also exploring the use of these features in Inference-Engine, a deep learning library designed to facilitate neural network training and inference for high-performance computing applications written in modern Fortran.

Preliminary vibration design and test criteria considerations for the space shuttle

This paper presents some Marshall Space Flight Center preliminary vibration design and test criteria considerations for the space shuttle. The discussion is primarily concerned with the formulation of vibration criteria for the design and testing of the equipment installations on the shuttle. A recommended criteria format is presented with a discussion of when the vibration environment has to be considered in design and testing. A semiempirical method of predicting the vibration criteria for the shuttle from vibroacoustic structural data banks is presented. Some preliminary vibration criteria predictions are presented for the orbiter and booster equipment bays and for the main shuttle engine. A research testing program to determine the vibroacoustic transfer through a typical shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) panel configuration is described.

CIRCAL-2 - General-purpose on-line circuit design.

CIRCAL-2 is a second-generation general-purpose on-line circuit-design program with the following main features: (1) multiple-analysis capability; (2) uniform and general data structures for handling text editing, network representations, and output results, regardless of analysis; (3) special techniques and structures for minimizing and controlling user-program interaction; (4) use of functionals for the description of hysteresis and heat effects; and (5) ability to define optimization procedures that 'replace' the user. The paper discusses the organization of CIRCAL-2, the aforementioned main features, and their consequences, such as a set of network elements and models general enough for most analyses and a set of functions tailored to circuit-design requirements. The presentation is descriptive, concentrating on conceptual rather than on program implementation details.

3C 323.1 - A QSO in a rich cluster of galaxies.

The redshift and structural data on the compact cluster Zw Cl 1545.1+2104 have been determined from deep plates of the cluster region and from spectral scans of the central galaxy in the cluster. The cluster is of richness 1 on Abell's (1958) scale, and the redshift of its central galaxy agrees well with that of the quasar 3C 323.1 which lies at a projected distance of 6.5 sec from the center of the cluster. The data indicate that the quasar is a member of the cluster as opposed to the observed trend.

A Structural Design for an Externally Blown Flap (EBF) Medium STOL Research Aircraft

A computer program to predict, by reference to structural drawings, the dynamic response of a high lift STOL wing with externally blown flaps was developed. Structural data for the computer program are presented in the form of sketches, weight and dynamic loads information graphs, and tables for an external blown, triple-slotted flap, high lift STOL transport wing. Weight, mass distribution, and moment of inertia data are summarized in table form and presented pictorially by drawing layout. The methods used for obtaining weight data were: (1) actual know, weight of components, (2) preliminary stress sizing, and (3) statistical weight estimating methods.

Three dimensional thrust chamber life prediction

A study was performed to analytically determine the cyclic thermomechanical behavior and fatigue life of three configurations of a Plug Nozzle Thrust Chamber. This thrust chamber is a test model which represents the current trend in nozzle design calling for high performance coupled with weight and volume limitations as well as extended life for reusability. The study involved the use of different materials and material combinations to evaluate their application to the problem of low-cycle fatigue in the thrust chamber. The thermal and structural analyses were carried out on a three-dimensional basis. Results are presented which show plots of continuous temperature histories and temperature distributions at selected times during the operating cycle of the thrust chamber. Computed structural data show critical regions for low-cycle fatigue and the histories of strain within the regions for each operation cycle.
