The occultation of Mariner 10 by Mercury

Analysis of Mariner 10 dual-frequency radio-occultation recordings has yielded new information on the radius and atmosphere of Mercury. The ingress measurements, which were conducted near 1.1 deg north latitude and 67.4 deg east longitude on the night side of the planet, gave a value for the radius of 2439.5 + or - 1 km. Egress near 67.6 deg north latitude and 258.4 deg east longitude on the sunlit side yielded a radius of 2439.0 + or - 1 km. The atmospheric measurements showed the electron density to be less than 1000 per cu cm on both sides of the planet. From the latter result one may infer an upper limit to the dayside surface gas density of 1 million molecules per cu cm.

Geological and hydrogeological investigations in west Malaysia

The author has identified the following significant results. Large structures along the east coast of the peninsula were discovered. Of particular significance were the circular structures which were believed to be associated with mineralization and whose existence was unknown. The distribution of the younger sediments along the east coast appeared to be more widespread than previously indicated. Along the Pahang coast on the southern end, small traces of raised beach lines were noted up to six miles inland. The existence of these beach lines was unknown due to their isolation in large coastal swamps.

Applications of Seasat to the offshore oil, gas and mining industries

The NASA satellite Seasat-A (to be launched in 1978) has applications to the offshore oil, gas, and mining industries including: (1) improvements in weather and wave forecasting, (2) studies of past wind and wave statistics for planning design requirements, and (3) monitoring ice formation, breakup, and movement in arctic regions. The primary geographic areas which will be monitored by Seasat-A include: the Beaufort Sea, the Labrador Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. east coast, West Africa, Equatorial East Pacific, the Gulf of Alaska, and the North Sea. Seasat-A instrumentation used in ocean monitoring consists of a radar altimeter, a radar scatterometer, a synthetic aperture radar, a microwave radiometer, and a visible and infrared radiometer. The future outlook of the Seasat program is planned in three phases: measurement feasibility demonstration (1978-1980), data accessibility/utility demonstration (1980-1983), and operational system demonstration (1983-1985).

Measurements of the Poynting vector of standing hydromagnetic waves at geosynchronous orbit

The observation is discussed of a train of hydromagnetic waves with a period of about 150 sec seen at synchronous orbit by the ATS 6 spacecraft on June 27, 1974. The critical observation is a phase shift of 90 deg between east-west oscillations of the particle flow and the east-west component of magnetic field oscillations. This phase shift alone suggests a standing rather than a propagating hydromagnetic wave. Careful processing of the particle data makes it possible to determine the drift velocity and hence the electric field of the wave. The wave electric field together with the time-varying magnetic field reveals an oscillating Poynting vector with zero mean component aligned with the ambient magnetic field and nonzero azimuthal (westward) component.

Preliminary comparisons of VHF radar maps of F-region irregularities with scintillations in the equatorial region

Multiantenna 50 MHz radar backscatter maps of echo power from night-time F-region equatiorial irregularities obtained at Jicamarca, Peru were compared with simultaneous VHF scintillation observations from Huancayo at 137 and 254 MHz during the period 20 November to 12 December 1975. Saturation of VHF scintillations in excess of 20 dB was observed at both these frequencies during times when radar maps showed large intense plume structures rising into the topside ionosphere. On nights when only thin layers of bottomside irregularities were observed, moderate to weak scintillations were recorded at VHF. Preliminary values of east-west horizontal irregularity drift velocities were obtained and compared with scintillation rate observations. Using the 1.5-deg and 4.5-deg longitudinal separation between the Jicamarca radar and ionospheric observation points of the two satellites from Huancayo, information was derived regarding large-scale east-west structure during the development phase of the irregularities.

Orbital chemistry - Lunar surface analysis from the X-ray and gamma ray remote sensing experiments

The X-ray and gamma-ray lunar surface remote sensing experiments conducted by the Apollo 15 and 16 are discussed. The data indicate mare basins that are extensively basaltic and highlands of aluminum-rich anorthositic-type feldspar. An east-west asymmetry involving higher Al/Si ratios toward the east is noted; high concentrations of a KREEP-type component along the Imbrium-Procellarum edges and throughout the basin are also observed. Lunar K/Th ratios, lowest in areas of the Imbrium and higher in the surrounding mare and highlands, may lend support to the picture of the moon as a high-temperature condensate.

Meteoritic material at five large impact craters

The paper analyzes the meteoritic material at five multikilometer craters: Clearwater (Lac a l'Eau Claire) East and West (22 and 32 km), Manicouagan (70 km) and Mistastin (28 km), all in Canada; and Lake Bosumtwi (10.5 km), Ghana, which is associated with Ivory Coast tektites. Radiochemical neutron activation analysis is applied to 16 crater samples for the siderophile trace elements Ir, Os, Pd, Ni, Ge, and Re, which are depleted to varying degrees in the earth's crust but are abundant in all meteorites except achondrites. It is found that only two samples, both from Clearwater, exhibit a strong meteoritic signal. The remaining ones fall within or slightly above the range for terrestrial rocks, and therefore at best contain only small meteoritic components. Clearwater East is the first terrestrial impact crater to be associated with a stony meteorite (a C1 or C2 chondrite).

Quiet time interplanetary cosmic ray anisotropies observed from Pioneer 10 and 11

Cerenkov counters on the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft, capable of detecting alpha particles and protons with energies up to 480 MeV, and nucleons and electrons with energies up to 6 MeV, have yielded data on cosmic ray anisotropies during periods of low solar activity. Observations from Pioneer 11 place east-west anisotropy at 0.41 plus or minus 0.11%, and the north-south anisotropy at near zero; Pioneer 10 results show east-west anisotropy to be approximately 0.59 plus or minus 0.18%, and the north-south component at 0.25 plus or minus 0.08%. It is noted that the Pioneer 10 observations were obtained at the 6 AU range, while those from Pioneer 11 originated closer to the sun (1.1 to 2.7 AU). Attention is given to the ratio of the perpendicular to parallel components of the diffusion coefficient, and to the large north-south anisotropy reported by Pioneer 10, an effect due possibly to gradient drift, and to an additional streaming independent of the magnetic field polarity.

Multiple-satellite studies of magnetospheric substorms: Plasma sheet recovery and the poleward leap of auroral-zone activity

Particle observations from pairs of satellites (Ogo 5, Vela 4A and 5B, Imp 3) during the recovery of plasma sheet thickness late in substorms were examined. Six of the nine events occurred within about 5 min in locations near the estimated position of the neutral sheet, but over wide ranges of east-west and radial separations. The time of occurrence and spatial extent of the recovery were related to the onset (defined by ground Pi 2 pulsations) and approximate location (estimated from ground mid-latitude magnetic signatures) of substorm expansions. It was found that the plasma sheet recovery occurred 10 - 30 min after the last in a series of Pi bursts, which were interpreted to indicate that the recovery was not due directly to a late, high latitude substorm expansion. The recovery was also observed to occur after the substorm current wedge had moved into the evening sector and to extend far to the east of the center of the last preceding substorm expansion.

Analyses of mean and turbulent motion in the tropics with the use of unequally spaced data

Wind velocities from 25 km to 60 km over Ascension Island, Fort Sherman and Kwajalein for the period January 1970 to December 1971 are analyzed in order to achieve a better understanding of the mean flow, the eddy kinetic energy and the Eulerian time spectra of the eddy kinetic energy. Since the data are unequally spaced in time, techniques of one-dimensional covariance theory were utilized and an unequally spaced time series analysis was accomplished. The theoretical equations for two-dimensional analysis or wavenumber frequency analysis of unequally spaced data were developed. Analysis of the turbulent winds and the average seasonal variance and eddy kinetic energy of the turbulent winds indicated that maximum total variance and energy is associated with the east-west velocity component. This is particularly true for long period seasonal waves which dominate the total energy spectrum. Additionally, there is an energy shift for the east-west component into the longer period waves with altitude increasing from 30 km to 50 km.

Aquatic sources and sinks for nitrous oxide

Data are presented which suggest the complexity of the aquatic nitrogen cycle as it affects N2O. The data are from studies made in the central and south-east tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean and in Chesapeake Bay. The data indicate that oxidation of ammonium and amino nitrogen and nitrification form the principle source for marine N2O. It is estimated that the yearly global yield for oceanic N2O is less than about 10 to the 7th power tons. The consumption of atmospheric N2O by the open ocean has not been evidenced, although data from the south-east tropical Pacific and Chesapeake Bay show the consumption of dissolved N2O in low-oxygen conditions. Preliminary observations have also indicated the consumption of atmospheric N2O by aquatic systems such as freshwater pond and a tidal saltmarsh.

Fluctuations in SO2 emission during recent eruptions of Etna

The eruptive activity of July-August 1977 of Mt. Etna consisted of four separate, short eruptive episodes. The rate of SO2 emission during these eruptions was monitored using a remote-sensing correlation spectrometer. The obtained data suggest that fluctuations in the SO2 emission rate provide a means for predicting eruptions of Etna. The July-August 1977 eruptions were confined to the North East Crater vent, while continuous degassing occurred from the central vents. The continuous gas plume was blown downwind immediately after it was emitted while the eruption plumes from the North East Crater rose 500-1,000 m before being blown horizontally. Monitoring began on 24 July, immediately after the first eruptive episode had ended, and continued until 27 August.

Characteristics of trough region auroral patches and detached arcs observed by Isis 2

All of the data presented in this paper were obtained from the Isis 2 satellite, which was launched into a 1400-km near-circular polar orbit in April 1971. Instruments used in this study include the topside sounder for providing vertical profiles of the electron density, the Langmuir probe for measuring electron temperature and concentration, and the auroral scanning photometer for detecting optical emissions at 5577 A and 3914 A. Two distinct types of auroras (east-west-aligned oval-shaped 'patches', and isolated east-west 'detached arcs') are observed in the trough region (almost exclusively in the Northern Hemisphere) equatorward of the diffuse auroral boundary. Attention is given to comparison of patches and detached arcs, relation to magnetic indices, and relation to detached plasma and ELF hiss.

Lunar interaction with the solar wind - Effects on lunar electrical conductivity estimates

The lunar electromagnetic response, measured at very low frequencies with the moon in the solar wind, is used to evaluate interior electrical conductivity at great depth and to determine limits on the size of possible lunar core. A theory is developed wherein compression of the magnetic field in the lunar tail cavity caused by inflowing plasma at the lunar limbs and in the lunar wake, bends the magnetic field in the lunar interior and thereby alters the tangential component of magnetic field observed on the dayside surface. This theory strongly indicates that cavity fringing cannot explain the enhanced East-West fluctuations. It is proposed that the East-West fluctuations might be due to diamagnetic currents caused by lunar surface photoelectrons in the lunar terminator region.
