Embedded, Real-Time, and Distributed Traveling Wave Fault Location Method Using Graph Convolutional Neural Networks

This work proposes and develops an implementation of a fault location method to provide a fast and resilient protection scheme for power distribution systems. The method analyzes the transient dynamics of traveling waves (TWs) to generate features using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), which are then used to train several graph convolutional network (GCN) models. Faults are simulated in the IEEE 34-node system, which is divided into three protection zones (PZs). The goal is to identify the PZ in which the fault occurs. The GCN models create a distributed protection scheme, as all nodes are able to retrieve a prediction. Given that message-passing between nodes occurs both during training and in the execution of the model, the resiliency of such schemes to communication losses was analyzed and demonstrated. One of the models, which only uses voltage measurements, was implemented on a Texas Instruments F28379D development board. The execution times were monitored to assess the speed of the protection scheme. It is shown that the proposed method can be executed in approximately a millisecond, which is comparable to existing TW protection in the transmission system. For experimental purposes, a DWT-based detection method is employed. A design of a setup to playback TWs using two development boards is also addressed.

Single-Step Fabrication of Au-Fe-BaTiO3 Nanocomposite Thin Films Embedded with Non-Equilibrium Au-Fe Alloyed Nanostructures

Nanocomposite thin film materials present great opportunities in coupling materials and functionalities in unique nanostructures including nanoparticles-in-matrix, vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs), and nanolayers. Interestingly the nanocomposites processed through a non-equilibrium processing method, e.g., pulsed laser deposition (PLD), often possess unique metastable phases and microstructures that could not achieve using equilibrium techniques, and thus lead to novel physical properties. In this work, a unique three-phase system composed of BaTiO3 (BTO), with two immiscible metals, Au and Fe, is demonstrated. By adjusting the deposition laser frequency from 2 Hz to 10 Hz, the phase and morphology of Au and Fe nanoparticles in BTO matrix vary from separated Au and Fe nanoparticles to well-mixed Au-Fe alloy pillars. This is attributed to the non-equilibrium process of PLD and the limited diffusion under high laser frequency (e.g., 10 Hz). The magnetic and optical properties are effectively tuned based on the morphology variation. This work demonstrates the stabilization of non-equilibrium alloy structures in the VAN form and allows for the exploration of new non-equilibrium materials systems and their properties that could not be easily achieved through traditional equilibrium methods.

Afterglows from Binary Neutron Star Postmerger Systems Embedded in Active Galactic Nuclei Disks

Abstract The observability of afterglows from binary neutron star mergers occurring within active galactic nuclei (AGN) disks is investigated. We perform 3D GRMHD simulations of a postmerger system and follow the jet launched from the compact object. We use semianalytic techniques to study the propagation of the blast wave powered by the jet through an AGN disk-like external environment, extending to distances beyond the disk scale height. The synchrotron emission produced by the jet-driven forward shock is calculated to obtain the afterglow emission. The observability of this emission at different frequencies is assessed by comparing it to the quiescent AGN emission. In the scenarios where the afterglow could temporarily outshine the AGN, we find that detection will be more feasible at higher frequencies (≳10 14 Hz) and the electromagnetic counterpart could manifest as a fast variability in the AGN emission, on timescales less than a day.

Embedding a Critical Point in a Hadron to Quark–Gluon Crossover Equation of State

It is shown how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid–gas phase transition and the 3D Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations α + 2β + $\gamma$ = 2 and β(δ - 1) = $\gamma$ arise automatically, as does a new relation between the two critical amplitudes. The resulting equation of state has parameters which may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

A nanofibrous catalyst and method of manufacture. A precursor solution of a transition metal based material is formed into a plurality of interconnected nanofibers by electro-spinning the precursor solution with the nanofibers converted to a catalytically active material by a heat treatment. Selected subsequent treatments can enhance catalytic activity.

Automated Parameterized CFD Simulations of Phase-Change Material Embedded Heat Exchangers

Thermal storage can be implemented using Phase-Change Materials (PCM), which absorb significant latent heat with a relatively small temperature change. PCM phase-change processes are transient and are driven by thermal diffusion and natural convection – the latter, especially for melting process. Modeling and simulation of PCM heat exchangers is typically computationally intensive due to the relative complex time-dependent underlying physics. This paper presents a study investigating a single straight tube with circular transverse fins in the vertical orientation, using PCM’s with 37oC nominal melting temperature, leveraging automated parametric CFD simulations. The computational domain is reduced to 2D axisymmetric for a segment of the HX comprising a region in between two fins with constant wall temperature as boundary condition. This approach allows for faster evaluations of the transient thermal characteristics for a given design space of interest. Correlations and reduced order models (ROM’s) are developed. Results indicate that the ROM’s reproduce the CFD simulations with high accuracy for designs from the training data set, however, designs from cross-validation and test sets do not always have good agreement. The limited number of designs in the training set is a possible cause for the lack of robustness of the ROM’s and thus additional training designs will be added in future work. The ROM’s solve the simulations on average 500,000 times faster than CFD.
