In the closer investigation of the results obtained from a wing model with a rotary cylinder mounted in its leading edge (NACA TM's 307 and 354), the velocity distribution in the vicinity of the surface of the model was determined by a hot-wire anemometer. The results confirmed the belief that the rotary cylinder had considerable effect on the air flow, but demonstrated the fact that the direct influence of the cylinder is confined to a very thin layer in immediate proximity to the surface.

This paper reports on 4-component balance measurements with and without angle of sideslip made on an airfoil with end plate at one tip. In addition, pressure distribution measurements on the end plate served as a basis for the determination of the forces on the end plate and for the bending moments.
Improved method of parameter identification based on decomposing single wide-band model into two or more component systems in parallel. Each component model predominates in specific frequency range. Wide-band mathematical model of system identified as two narrow-band models: one containing most of information on high-frequency components of dynamics, and one containing most of information on low-frequency components. Applicable to diverse systems, including vibrating structures, electronic circuits, and control systems.
Work on this grant has consisted of two major studies of cardiovascular regulation in athletes along with several smaller supporting studies. This summary will give a brief overview of two major studies, and then conclude with an analysis of what the findings from these studies mean practically, and how they can be applied to current problems with post-flight orthostatic intolerance. The first study addresses a cross-sectional analysis of orthostatic intolerance in highly aerobically trained individuals; the second addresses ventricular pressure/volume relationships in athletes.

This semi-annual status report is divided into two sections: Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Lab and Aeronomy Lab. The Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) research involves studying solar cell materials using the STM built at Florida Tech using a portion of our initial Jove equipment funding. One result of the participation in the FSEC project will be to design and build an STM system which is portable. This could serve as a prototype STM system which might be used on the Space Shuttle during a Spacelab mission, or onboard the proposed Space Station. The scanning tunneling microscope is only able to image the surface structure of electrically conductive crystals; by building an atomic force microscope (AFM) the surface structure of any sample, regardless of its conductivity, will be able to be imaged. With regards to the Aeronomy Lab, a total of four different mesospheric oxygen emission codes were created to calculate the intensity along the line of sight of the shuttle observations for 2972A, Herzberg I, Herzberg II, and Chamberlain bands. The thermosphere-ionosphere coupling project was completed with two major accomplishments: collection of 500 data points on modulation of neutral wind with geophysical variables, and establishment of constraints on behavior of the height of the ionosphere as a result of interaction between geophysical and geometrical factors. The magnetotail plasma project has been centered around familiarization with the subject in the form of a literature search and preprocessing of IMP-8 data.
Surface albedo and snow-covered-area (SCA) are crucial inputs to the hydrologic and climatologic modeling of alpine and seasonally snow-covered areas. Because the spectral albedo and thermal regime of pure snow depend on grain size, areal distribution of snow grain size is required. Remote sensing has been shown to be an effective (and necessary) means of deriving maps of grain size distribution and snow-covered-area. Developed here is a technique whereby maps of grain size distribution improve estimates of SCA from spectral mixture analysis with AVIRIS data.
