An interactive modular design for computerized photometry in spectrochemical analysis

An interactive, top-down structured program design is described which produces a general flexible description of totally automatic photometry of emission spectra in an operating environment in which sample compositions and analysis procedures are low-volume and nonroutine. The use of this type of programming is illustrated by a project to computerize trace elemental determinations including the automated reading of spectrographic plates produced by a 3.4-m Ebert mount spectrograph using a dc-arc in an argon atmosphere.

Modular Amplifier/Antenna Arrays

Two proposed solar-powered microwave transmitter modules would include amplifiers in direct contact with antenna dipoles so that metalization of dipoles serves as heat-dissipation areas for amplifiers. In integrated energy converter (solar radiation to microwaves), solar cells feed dc power directly to microwave amplifier/antenna modules. Antenna elements also serve as heat sinks for amplifiers.

Modular instrumentation system for real-time measurements and control on reciprocating engines

An instrumentation system was developed for reciprocating engines. Among the parameters measured are the indicated mean effective pressure, or theoretical work per cycle, and the mass fraction burn rate, a measure of the combustion rate in the cylinder. These computations are performed from measured cylinder pressure and crankshaft angle and are available in real time for the experimenter. A 100 or 200 consecutive-cycle sample is analyzed to reduce the effect of cyclic variations in the engine. Data are displayed in bargraph form, and the mean and standard deviation are computed. Other instruments are also described.

Modular design attitude control system

A hybrid multilevel linear quadratic regulator (ML-LQR) approach was developed and applied to the attitude control of models of the rotational dynamics of a prototype flexible spacecraft and of a typical space platform. Three axis rigid body flexible suspension models were developed for both the spacecraft and the space platform utilizing augmented body methods. Models of the spacecraft with hybrid ML-LQR attitude control and with LQR attitude control were simulated and their response with the two different types of control were compared.

Performance evaluation and calibration of a modular multiband radiometer for remote sensing field research

A multiband radiometer suitable for operation from helicopter, small plane, truck, or tripod platforms was developed. The standard unit is equipped with the seven thematic mapper spectral bands with an added band from 1.5 to 1.30 microns; however, up to eight user specified bands from 0.4 to 15 microns may be installed under clean field conditions. Results of prototype tests of the spectral responsivity of the detectors, the transmittance of the optical filters as a function of wavelength, the fields of view, and the system linearity, temperature stability, noise performance, and dynamic range were evaluated. Minor modifications were made to the instrument and the results of final testing are reported.

Modular approach for satellite communication ground terminals

The trend in satellite communications is toward completely digital, time division multiple access (TDMA) systems with uplink and downlink data rates dictated by the type of service offered. Trunking terminals will operate in the 550 MBPS (megabit per second) region uplink and downlink, whereas customer premise service (CPS) terminals will operate in the 25 to 10 MBPS region uplink and in the 200 MBPS region downlink. Additional criteria for the ground terminals will be to maintain clock sychronization with the system and burst time integrity to within a matter of nanoseconds, to process required order-fire information, to provide adaptive data scrambing, and to compensate for variations in the user input output data rates, and for changes in range in the satellite communications links resulting from satellite perturbations in orbit. To achieve the required adaptability of a ground terminal to the above mentioned variables, programmable building blocks can be developed that will meet all of these requirements. To maintain system synchronization, i.e., all bursted data arriving at the satellite within assigned TDMA windows, ground terminal transmit data rates and burst timing must be maintained within tight tolerances. With a programmable synchronizer as the heart of the terminal timing generation, variable data rates and burst timing tolerances are achievable. In essence, the unit inputs microprocessor generated timing words and outputs discrete timing pulses.

Exhibit D modular design attitude control system study

A dynamically equivalent four body approximation of the NASTRAN finite element model supplied for hybrid deployable truss to support the digital computer simulation of the ten body model of the flexible space platform that incorporates the four body truss model were investigated. Coefficients for sensitivity of state variables of the linearized model of the three axes rotational dynamics of the prototype flexible spacecraft were generated with respect to the model's parameters. Software changes required to accommodate addition of another rigid body to the five body model of the rotational dynamics of the prototype flexible spacecraft were evaluated.

Modular Pick-and-Bucket Mining Machine

Concept for improved conventional pick-and-bucket mining machine offered as backup for hydrojet-jaw mining machine. Picks on chain dislodge coal and buckets on chain scoop it up. Depending on width cut, unit composed of only two end modules or end modules plus one, two, or three incremental modules. Folding curved shields protect sides of miner from falling coal and rock. Two side stabilizers - extendable hydraulic members - anchor miner against lateral drift. Unlike conventional machines, new version tilts cutters vertically and skews them horizontally to changing floor slopes and seam heights.

A modular docking mechanism for in-orbit assembly and spacecraft servicing

A Docking Mechanism concept is described which is suitable for use with autonomous docking systems. The central feature of using simple cylindrical handles on one side and a type of prism seating on the other is offered as a practical method of achieving a standardized structural interface without freezing continued development of the latches, either technically or commercially. The main emphasis in docking mechanism concepts is in two directions: (1) a very simple docking mechanism, involving mainly the latch mechanism to achieve a structural link; and (2) a sophisticated Docking Mechanism, where the latch mechanism is designed for nonrigid spacecraft and the achievement of very low dynamic interactions between spacecraft during the docking process.

Coherent optical system of modular imaging collectors (COSMIC) - An approach for a large aperture high angular resolution telescope in space

Very high angular resolution can be achieved in UV/optical astronomy through interferometers in space. A concept analysis of COSMIC, which may be placed into orbit by the Space Shuttle in the late 1990's, is discussed. The photon-collecting area is three times larger than that of Space Telescope (ST), and exceeds its resolution by approximately an order of magnitude. Several alternative configurations are presented to scope the extent of design approaches which may be achievable within the transportation capability of the Space Shuttle.

Preliminary results of a quantitative comparison of the spectral signatures of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Modular Optoelectronic Multispectral Scanner (MOMS).

Operationally acquired Thematic Mapper and experimental MOMS-01 data are evaluated quantitatively concerning the systems spectral response and performance for geoscientific applications. Results show the two instruments to be similar in the spectral bands compared. Although the MOMS scanner has a smaller IFOV, it has a lower modulation transfer function performance for small, low contrast features as compared to Thematic Mapper. This deficiency does not only occur when MOMS was switched to the low gain mode. It is due to the CD arrays used (ITEK CCPD 1728).
