Freeze Casting of LAGP for 3D Textured Solid-State Structural Electrolytes

In this study, all-solid-state structural lithium-ion batteries, a type of load bearing electrochemical energy storage that provides systems-level weight savings is being pursued for the realization of inherently safe next generation hybrid-electric and all-electric green aerospace propulsion systems. Currently investigated all-solid-state batteries do not meet the requirements for specific power and mechanical stability. To address these issues, freeze casting of lithium aluminum germanium phosphate (LAGP) electrolyte material has been explored for the creation of a textured 3D electrolyte scaffold with large interfacial surface area for high power discharge and hierarchical porosity for accommodation of active material volume changes during electrochemical cycling. We report the effects of freeze casting processing parameters on the microstructural development and mechanical performance of the scaffolds, characterized through scanning electron microscopy and ring-on-ring mechanical testing. Slurry composition and casting parameters such as solids loading, casting speed, tape angle, and temperature gradients have been modified to determine the impact on density, lamellar morphology, and final load-bearing performance.

(Preliminary) Effects of Ball Milling Zeolite Powders for Use in Additively Manufactured Solid Sorbents

Zeolite 13X is favorable to be used as an adsorbent in carbon dioxide (CO2) removal from the spacecraft cabin air. Reducing the size of the zeolite particles and particle size distribution is thought to increase the capacity of CO2 adsorption of the zeolite 13X powder, and potentially increase its manufacturability as a paste for additive manufacturing or slip casting. This paper will go into detail on the process of using ball milling in order to reduce particle size and particle size distribution of commercial zeolite 13X powder, as well as to characterize CO2 adsorption and manufacturability of the milled powder. Both dry and wet ball milling was analyzed during the experiment. Studies were also ran on the amount of time the powder was milled, rotational speed of the milling machine, ball to powder ratio, ball to jar ratio, and ethanol to powder ratio. The processed powder was then characterized through laser diffraction, SEM, and surface measurement techniques to show that particle size and particle size distribution could be reduced, and to show the effect of the reduced particle size and particle size distribution on CO2 adsorption and manufacturability.

Measuring Zeolite Thermal Conductivity for Carbon Dioxide Adsorption Systems

The Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) is a critical component of the air revitalization system in the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS). The CDRA operates by employing a zeolite material that adsorbs carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from the cabin air and desorbs it downstream from the cabin for further processing, ensuring CO 2 levels at 2 mmHg 1 . The low thermal conductivity of zeolite reduces the heating rate of the temperature swing cycle and increases power requirements.

Measuring Titanium Heat Pipe Thermal Conductivity for CO2 Adsorption Systems

Current models of the Air-Cooled Temperature Swing Adsorption Compressor (AC-TSAC) being developed for long duration space exploration utilize cooling chambers and heat plates to adsorb and desorb contaminants -13 . To reduce resources required and lower the equivalent system mass (ESM), the study focuses on determining the applications of titanium heat pipe systems to operate both phases, allowing for future research into the development of a heat pipe chamber to hold the zeolite formulations.

Engineered Hexagonal Boron Nitride:Titanium Dioxide Composites for High Voltage Insulation

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and Titanium dioxide are both ceramic materials with widespread use in commercial and consumer applications in everything from cosmetics and paint to deep space satellite components. As a dielectric material, hBN is electrically insulating, thermally conductive, and stable to most temperatures and environments. Titanium dioxide is also a good electrical insulator with a wide bandgap and large dielectric constant, as well as high temperature tolerance and chemical stability. This presentation covers our recent efforts to combine the best properties of hBN and titanium dioxide to produce an intercalated hBN:titanium dioxide composite which was then further processed and incorporated into polymer composites, as well as a standalone ceramic material for testing as a novel insulation material.

Thin Film Sensors for Fission Surface Power

Physical sensors fabricated with thin films could result a significant savings in space and weight with improved reliability for monitoring the long-term operation of fission surface power systems. Thin film sensors of 1 µm or less are attractive for FSP applications because they can be incorporated onto component surfaces with minimal machining and the additional weight to a system is minimal compared to thick film-, wire-, or foil-based sensors. The thin, surface fabrication of the sensors is also expected to make them less susceptible to deep dose effects that affect thicker sensors. An overview of thin film sensors using thermocouples and resistive elements designed, fabricated, and demonstrated at GRC for aerospace applications exceeding 900°C is presented.
