Techniques for maintaining spacecraft sterility after addition or replacement of components - microbiological contamination of sterile environments
Abstract We investigate waves close to the lower‐hybrid frequency in 12 magnetotail reconnection electron diffusion region (EDR) events with guide field levels of near‐zero to 30%. In about half of the events, the wave vector has a small component along the current sheet normal, consistent with known lower‐hybrid drift wave properties, but the perpendicular magnetic field fluctuations can be comparable or greater than the parallel component, a feature unique to the waves inside and adjacent to EDRs. Another new wave property is that the wave vector has a significant component along the current sheet normal in some events and completely along the normal for one event. In 1/4 of the events, the term has a significant contribution to the wave electric field, possibly a feature of lower‐hybrid waves more likely to exist in the diffusion region than further away from the X‐line. Electron temperature variations are correlated with the wave potential, due to wave electric field acceleration and crossings at the corrugated separatrix region with different amounts of mixing between reconnection inflowing and outflowing populations. The latter also leads to the anti‐correlation between parallel and perpendicular temperature components. Using four‐spacecraft measurements, the magnetic field line twisting is demonstrated by the correlated fluctuations in and . The lower‐hybrid wave in the EDR of weak guide field reconnection may be generated near separatrices and penetrate to the mid‐plane or locally generated, and the latter possibility is beyond the prediction of previous reconnection simulations.

Vehicle telemetry measurements for all stages of Skylab 2 are presented. The data sources for the launch vehicle and command service module are identified. The data evaluation guide format is described. The system for designating the components of the spacecraft is defined. A list of abbreviations for technical terms used in the reporting documents is included.
An S-band tracking system employing one way Doppler applicable to the tracking and data relay system (TDRS) was evaluated. This evaluation is limited to the measurement system parameters. The analysis assumes state-of-the-art components such as spacecraft oscillator long term stability of one part in 10 to the 8th power and ground station oscillator stability of one part in 10 to the 11th power. Signal characteristics comparable with the present ranging systems are utilized in the analysis. Predicated upon measurement system parameters, position uncertainties for the low orbiting spacecraft vary from 5 meters to 2 kilometers along track, 4 meters to 1 kilometer cross track, and 1 meter to 180 meters radially depending upon the tracking geometry and the high satellite position and velocity error assumptions.
A satellite precision attitude control system was designed, based on the use of STARS as the principal sensing system. The entire system was analyzed and simulated in detail, considering the nonideal properties of the control and sensing components and realistic spacecraft mass properties. Experimental results were used to improve the star tracker noise model. The results of the simulation indicate that STARS performs in general as predicted in a realistic application and should be a strong contender in most precision earth pointing applications.
A study of the characteristics of pairs of oppositely directed spikes in ionospheric convection velocities (or shear flow reversals), as first described by Gurnett, has been conducted by using data from Atmosphere Explorer C. These phenomena tend to occur near the large-scale reversal from sunward to antisunward convection on the nightside of the earth. Generally, the spikelike shear flow reversals involve electric field components along the spacecraft orbit that are directed toward the region between them, in which inverted V type electron precipitation is observed. This relationship between the electron precipitation and the electric field spikes is consistent with an upward-flowing field-aligned current that is fed by Pedersen currents from the adjacent regions of strong convection. In one case a divergent equivalent electric field structure was observed, that is, with the spikelike electric fields pointing away from the region in between, which in this case exhibited a sharp electron flux dropout. This opposite configuration may be an example of counterparts to inverted V structures existing in regions of downward-flowing field-aligned currents.
The plasma interaction experiment (PIX) is a battery powered preprogrammed auxiliary payload on the LANDSAT-C launch. This experiment is part of a larger program to investigate space plasma interactions with spacecraft surfaces and components. The varying plasma densities encountered during available telemetry coverage periods are deemed sufficient to determine first order interactions between the space plasma environment and the biased experimental surfaces. The specific objectives of the PIX flight experiment are to measure the plasma coupling current and the negative voltage breakdown characteristics of a solar array segment and a gold plated steel disk. Measurements will be made over a range of surface voltages up to plus or minus kilovolt. The orbital environment will provide a range of plasma densities. The experimental surfaces will be voltage biased in a preprogrammed step sequence to optimize the data returned for each plasma region and for the available telemetry coverage.

Specifications, design, and use of spacecraft and missile components are discussed, such as tail assemblies, radiometers, magnetormeters, pins, reaction wheels, ball bearings, actuators, mirrors, nutation dampers, airfoils, solar arrays, etc.
A description of the dedicated gravitational satellite (Gravsat) mission is presented. Scientific objectives are to substantially improve knowledge of solid earth geophysics and oceanography by determining a more accurate geopotential. The most stringent requirement is determination of mean gravity anomalies over regions 100-km square to an accuracy of 2.5 mgal (1 gal = 1 cm/s squared). Fundamental geodetic data will be satellite-to-satellite measurement of relative range rate. Orbital characteristics are discussed. An error budget is presented which indicates that the requisite measurement precision can be achieved by closed-loop RF doppler measurements. Implicit in the discussion of the error budget is a description of the spacecraft and systems components.
The Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft all experienced anomalous behavior during their encounters with Jupiter. In particular, the Voyager 1 spacecraft experienced 42 electrical circuitry designed to protect the on-board computer from power fluctuations. Given the diversity of instrumentation and frequency of the anomalies observed by Voyager 1 in the inner magnetosphere of Jupiter, this set of data is particularly well suited as a case study. Although the nature of the anomalies clearly indicates a spacecraft-charging origin, the Voyager low-energy plasma data apparently imply absolute surface potentials of only a few tens of volts. It is thus difficult to explain the anomalies in terms of surface charging. The anomalies are, however, shown to be consistent with the hypothesis of internal charging of spacecraft parts and components.
The measurement and monitoring of infrared emission in the environment of the Space Station has a twofold importance - for the study of the phenomena itself and as an aid in planning and interpreting Station based infrared experiments. Spectral measurements of the infrared component of the spacecraft glow will, along with measurements in other spectral regions, provide data necessary to fully understand and model the physical and chemical processes producing these emissions. The monitoring of the intensity of these emissions will provide background limits for Space Station based infrared experiments and permit the determination of optimum instrument placement and pointing direction. Continuous monitoring of temporal changes in the background radiation (glow) will also permit better interpretation of Station-based infrared earth sensing and astronomical observations. The primary processes producing infrared emissions in the Space Station environment are: (1) Gas phase excitations of Station generated molecules ( e.g., CO2, H2O, organics...) by collisions with the ambient flux of mainly O and N2. Molecular excitations and generation of new species by collisions of ambient molecules with Station surfaces. They provide a list of resulting species, transition energies, excitation cross sections and relevant time constants. The modeled spectrum of the excited species occurs primarily at wavelengths shorter than 8 micrometer. Emissions at longer wavelengths may become important during rocket firing or in the presence of dust.
The vulnerability of spacecraft materials and components to trapped radiation in aerospace environment is considered along with which orbits the radiation effects are most likely to occur. It seems that the effects on organic polymers are embrittlement, change of modulus and coefficient of expansion; on optics the effects are discoloration and distortion. The effects on integrated circuits are also listed.
The salient features of the Advanced Communiations Technology Satellite (ACTS) that is being presently developed under NASA sponsorship and is now in the stage of flight hardware assembly and integration, are described. Particular attention is given to the hardware components of the spacecraft, the engineering model communication package, and special test equipment. The ACTS is being prepared for a launch in May of 1992.
Jacobi-integral method enables efficient, accurate computation of trajectory of natural satellite or spacecraft perturbed by component of gravitational potential depending explicitly on both position and time. Instead of total energy, Jacobi integral, which is energylike constant of motion in this case, embedded in Newtonian differential equations of motion. Trajectories computed in fewer steps. With modifications, applicable to such terrestrial problems as motions of rotors and of beams of electrically charged particles in changing electrical and magnetic fields.
