Open-Loop Control of Adjustable Tuned Mass Dampers for Floating Wind Turbine Platforms

In this study, we demonstrate the ability of adjustable tuned mass dampers (TMDs) to reduce the platform motion of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). The TMDs are located in the hull and provide control authority by varying the amount of water ballast and compressed air in a reservoir over time. The optimal TMD settings depend on the wind and wave conditions of the FOWT. We present an open-loop control scheme that changes the TMD natural frequency based on sea state and a simple method for estimating the peak wave period and significant wave height. The performance of this open-loop control is compared to ideal control of the TMDs (set knowing the exact sea state), a TMD with a constant natural frequency targeting the design load case with the greatest platform motion, and a baseline set of simulations of the platform without TMDs. The constant natural frequency case performs nearly as effectively as the actively controlled case, suggesting that the TMDs can be simply designed for extreme load conditions and provide consistent control over a range of environments; however, the methods used to find the optimal TMD parameters and estimate sea state statistics could be used in other aspects of FOWT control and design.

Ceramic matrix composite turbine nozzle shell and method of assembly

A method of manufacturing a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) turbine nozzle shell is provided. The method includes: assembling a primary outer nozzle platform, a primary inner nozzle platform, a core and trailing edge preform, and an airfoil-shaped body; joining the primary outer nozzle platform to a secondary outer nozzle platform of the airfoil-shaped body; and joining the primary inner nozzle platform to a secondary inner nozzle platform of the airfoil-shaped body. Composite plies circumferentially surround the airfoil-shaped body, and their longitudinal edges are cut into fingers that are folded down. The fingers are interleaved between secondary platform plies to form the secondary outer and inner nozzle platforms.

Curved seal with relief cuts for adjacent gas turbine components

A flexible seal is used to seal between two adjacent gas turbine components. The flexible seal includes at least one metal ply having a forward end, an aft end axially separated from the forward end, and an intermediate portion between the forward end and the aft end. The intermediate portion defines a continuous curve in the circumferential direction, such that the aft end is circumferentially, and optionally radially, offset from the forward end. A plurality of relief cuts is defined through the at least one metal ply between the forward end and the aft end to increase flexibility and improve sealing in seal slots that are radially offset from one another.

Reversible pump-turbine installation

The present invention is a reversible pump-turbine installation positioned in a vertical borehole instead of in a conventional underground powerhouse or deep concrete powerhouse. The required plant cavitation coefficient may be achieved by simply boring a vertical borehole to the required depth rather than routing the water flow to and from a deeply buried powerhouse. A pneumatically controlled pressure relief valve may be incorporated into this invention.

Operating Conditions of a Main Bearing Contact in a Commercial Wind Turbine

This presentation described acoustic emissions and temperature characteristics of a commercial main bearing in a wind turbine drivetrain. These characteristics were measured on the outer ring of the bearing by SKF DVST nodes, which are mounted on both upwind and downwind rows of the main bearing at four equally spaced circumferential locations. The measurement started in early 2018 and ends in 2020 and five-month data in 2018 winter was analyzed in this study.

Heave-Plate Hydrodynamic Coefficients for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines - A Compilation of Data: Preprint

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's OpenFAST software is utilized by academics and industry professionals alike to simulate offshore wind turbines. The software's modeling of hydrodynamic loads on heave plates attached to these structures relies on user specified hydrodynamic coefficients. To guide the proper selection of these coefficients and potentially develop a new functionality within OpenFAST that automatically prescribes and/or adjust the heave-plate hydrodynamic coefficients, this paper reviews past literature to examine the dependence of the added mass, damping, and drag coefficients on various relevant non-dimensional parameters, including the Keulegan-Carpenter number, the frequency parameter, and the plate thickness ratio. Existing data in the literature show strong dependence of the hydrodynamic coefficients on the Keulegan-Carpenter number. Consistent trends are observed across a range of different plate geometry, plate porosity, and flow conditions. Secondary dependence of the coefficients on the frequency parameter and plate thickness ratio is also present.

Simulation of Peach Bottom turbine trip transient with RETRAN-3D using BXFGEN

The Peach Bottom 2 Turbine Trip transient is used to evaluate the capabilities and accuracy of coupled 3-D neutronics/thermal hydraulics best estimate calculations for support of safety analysis. Selected results, obtained with RETRAN-3D, are compared to available measurements and benchmark results. The comparisons are analyzed and the application of RETRAN-3D for a best estimate analysis approach within the safety analysis methodology is discussed. Overall, both the thermal-hydraulic and neutronic results show a good comparison to the experimental data, and the model is considered to accurately predict test data. In particular, the initial acoustic response of the main steam line and the subsequent main pressurization stages are well-predicted. During the main pressurization stage, the timing and magnitude of the in-core local pressurization and associated void compression are properly predicted based upon the agreement between local power range monitors (LPRM) predictions upwards, but the shift is slightly underpredicted. This indicates the methodology is well-posed for simulating this class of transient response.
