Studies relating to FM television and telemetry transmitters

The Auburn University Model S-2 FM television transmitter was examined to determine if the performance and reliability could be improved by application of new techniques and devices developed since completion of the original design work. In particular this study examined the possibility of increased use of integrated circuits. It was determined that improvements in both performance and reliability were possible. In addition a study was conducted to determine the feasibility of converting the transmitter to handle telemetry signals. The study revealed that this conversion was feasible and the modifications were made to the prototype model for verification.

Telemetry experiments with a hibernating black bear

The objectives of this research were to develop and test telemetry equipment suitable for monitoring physiological parameters and activity of a hibernating bear in its den, to monitor this data and other environmental information with the Nimbus 3 IRLS data collection system, and to refine immobilizing, handling, and other techniques required in future work with wild bears under natural conditions. A temperature-telemetering transmitter was implanted in the abdominal cavity of a captive black bear and body temperature data was recorded continuously during a 3 month hibernation period. Body temperatures ranging between 37.5 and 31.8 C were observed. Body temperature and overall activity were influenced by disturbances and ambient den temperature. Nychthemeral temperature changes were not noticable. A load cell weight recording device was tested for determining weight loss during hibernation. Monitoring of data by satellite was not attempted. The implanted transmitter was removed and the bear was released with a radiolocation collar at the conclusion of the experiment.

A multichannel electromagnetic flowmeter telemetry system.

An eight-channel biomedical telemetry system provides four channels of blood flow measurements in addition to blood-pressure and EKG data. Emphasis is placed on the amplifiers and signal conditioning circuitry required for interfacing of the electromagnetic flow transducers with the transmission and modulation subsystems. The large number of data channels permits measurement of flow distribution as well as total cardiac output. The batteries and electronics for four channels (blood flow) weigh about 500 g and have a volume of 250 cu cm.

Single and multichannel implanted telemetry systems.

Description of improved single-channel and multichannel telemetry systems designed for measurements of single and multiple physiological parameters, respectively, with adequate accuracy. The systems include a single-channel biopotential transmitter, a temperature transmitter, a pressure transmitter, and a multichannel transmitter for implant telemetric applications.

Evolution of the satellite telemetry data processing facility at the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Data from scientific and application satellites managed by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center are acquired through the world-wide Spacecraft Tracking and Data Network (STDN). These data are forwarded to a central telemetry data processing facility whose primary objective is the timely provision of the data to users in a form suitable for their analysis. In a successful evolution, a satellite data processing facility must adapt to changing support requirements while operationally supporting active spacecraft. Advances in the technology of data transmission, data storage systems, and file management make it feasible to implement a third-generation system which will be able to satisfy experimenter requirements for the next ten years.

Telemetry link for an automatic salmon migration monitor

The antenna and transmitter described in this report were designed for integration into the remote acoustic assessment system for detection of sockeye salmon in the Bristol Bay region of the Bering Sea. The assessment system configuration consists of an upward directed sonar buoy anchored 150 ft below the surface and attached by cable to a spar buoy tethered some 300 ft laterally. The spar buoy contains a telemetry transmitter, power supply, data processing electronics, an antenna and a beacon light.

Digital computer modeling of the process of reduction of redundancy in multichannel telemetry information by the method of adaptive discretization with associative sorting

Digital computer modeling of the process of adaptive discretization with associative sorting of actual multichannel telemetry information is discussed. The main task in modeling is production of initial data for determination of dependences describing the operation of the on-board information compression device. Conclusions are presented including the shortcomings of telemetric information used in modeling.

The question of the possibility of using Associative Computer Devices (ACD) for parallel adaptive discretization of multichannel telemetry information

The method of parallel adaptive discretization of data is considered the most promising and allows the effective compression algorithms to be used for high information-capacity radio telemetry systems. An associative computer device (ACD), i.e., parallel computers based on associative memory units (AMU), are recommended for realization of this method. A detailed discussion of the problems of application of AMU is followed by description of a particular ACD and its recommended use.

Airoscope telemetry system

The AIROscope (Ames Infrared Observatory telescope) telemetry system is described from signal conditioning on the gondola to display and storage at the ground station. All analog and digital data from the systems and experiments on the gondola go to a PCM encoder which formats the data into 10-bit words. Therefore, 0.1-percent resolution is inherently available for experimental data. The coded bit stream directly modulates the carrier of the FM transmitter. To insure reliable transmission over a 650-km range an 11-watt FM transmitter operating at 1483.5 MHz is used on the gondola. Modulation is narrow band FM with a maximum deviation of plus or minus 500 kHz. The maximum modulation frequency is determined by the data bit rate which could be as high as 500 kbps. Presently, a rate of 20.48 kbps is used. The ground station receiving system includes a steerable antenna (19-db gain), preamplifier (21-db gain) and receiver. All data are recorded on a tape recorder. The recorded signal then can be played back through the PCM decommutator unit at a later time for detailed data analysis by the experimenter.

117.6-kilobit telemetry from Mercury in-flight system analysis

This paper discusses very specifically the mode of the Mariner Venus/Mercury 1973 (MVM'73) telecommunications system in the interplexed dual channel 117.6 kilobits per second (kbps) and 2.45 kbps telemetry. This mode, originally designed for only Venus encounter, was also used at Mercury despite significantly less performance margin. Detailed analysis and careful measurement of system performance before and during flight operations allowed critical operational decisions, which made maximum use of the system capabilities.

Recent NASA contributions to biomedical telemetry

The present work reviews technological progress over the past five years in the field of long-term telemetric monitoring of physiological parameters during space flight. Emphasis is placed on those developments that have direct application to animal or human use on earth. An effort was made in these recent developments to free subjects from encumbering wires: a swallowable telemetry capsule for monitoring body temperature and a wristwatch transmitter connected to EKG leads were two of the devices developed.

A multichannel implantable telemetry system for flow, pressure, and ECG measurements

The design, principles of operation, and performance of an implantable miniaturized (48 cu cm in volume) multiplex telemetry system for simultaneous measurement of up to eight physiological parameters (including cardiovascular data) are described. Integrated circuits are used to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of fabrication. Power consumption is reduced using recently developed complementary MOS devices. PWM technique is selected as it is relatively easy to implement, lends itself to ICs, and provides an accurate means of transmitting data. The system is totally implantable within the chest of a test animal, with no wire penetrating through the skin. It is shown that the described system permits repeated measurement of the physiological effects of a variety of interventions in awake unanesthetized animals.
