Demonstration of active vibration control on a stirling-cycle cryocooler testbed

SatCon Technology Corporation has demonstrated excellent vibration reduction performance using active control on the JPL Stirling-cycle cryocooler testbed. The authors address the use of classical narrowband feedback control to meet the cryocooler vibration specifications using one cryocooler in a self-cancellation configuration. Similar vibration reduction performance was obtained using a cryocooler back-to-back configuration by actively controlling a reaction mass actuator that was used to mimic the second cooler.

The development of the human exploration demonstration project (HEDP), a planetary systems testbed

The Human Exploration Demonstration Project (HEDP) is an ongoing task at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Ames Research Center to address the advanced technology requirements necessary to implement an integrated working and living environment for a planetary surface habitat. The integrated environment will consist of life support systems, physiological monitoring of project crew, a virtual environment workstation, and centralized data acquisition and habitat systems health monitoring. There will be several robotic systems on a simulated planetary landscape external to the habitat environment to provide representative work loads for the crew. This paper describes the status of the HEDP after one year, the major facilities composing the HEDP, the project's role as an Ames Research Center testbed, and the types of demonstration scenarios that will be run to showcase the technologies.

Design of a solar array simulator for the NASA EOS testbed

The present spacecraft solar array simulator addresses both dc and ac characteristics as well as changes in illumination and temperature and performance degradation over the course of array service life. The computerized control system used allows simulation of a complete orbit cycle, in addition to automated diagnostics. The simulator is currently interfaced with the NASA EOS testbed.

Design of a nickel-hydrogen battery simulator for the NASA EOS testbed

The hardware and software design of a nickel-hydrogen (Ni-H2) battery simulator (BS) with application to the NASA Earth Observation System (EOS) satellite is presented. The battery simulator is developed as a part of a complete testbed for the EOS satellite power system. The battery simulator involves both hardware and software components. The hardware component includes the capability of sourcing and sinking current at a constant programmable voltage. The software component includes the capability of monitoring the battery's ampere-hours (Ah) and programming the battery voltage according to an empirical model of the nickel-hydrogen battery stored in a computer.

Optical pathlength control in the nanometer regime on the JPL phase B interferometer testbed

This paper describes experimental research being performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to develop and validate control concepts arising out of NASA's Control Structure Interaction program. The facility is meant to be a ground testbed with relevance to a broad class of future precision optical space systems. The objective of the experimental program is to investigate a multi-layer control approach to the maintenance of nanometer level optical pathlength control in the presence of external disturbances and multiple structural resonances. A brief overview of the experimental facility is presented. The control design methodology is discussed, and several experimental results are presented.

A systems approach to water recovery testing for space life support - Initial biomedical results from the ECLSS Water Recovery Test and plans for testbed utilization

Among the challenges of designing and constructing Space Station Freedom is the development of the water system. A review of past efforts in reclaiming waste water in enclosed environments reveals that there are many gaps in the biomedical understanding of this process. Some of the key uncertainties of human interaction with a closed water system include determining potential contaminants and establishing safe levels of multiple compounds in the enclosed system of Space Station. Another uncertainty is the microbial constituency of such a system and what impact it could have on crew health and performance. The use of iodine as the passive biocide may have both an indirect and direct impact on the crew. In this paper the initial results of the Water Recovery Test are reviewed from a biomedical perspective, revealing areas where more information is needed to develop the ECLSS water system. By including the approach of 'man as a subsystem', consideration is given to how man interacts with the total water system. Taking this systems approach to providing the crew with a safe source of water gives useful insight into the most efficient design and utilization of closed system testbeds.

Testbed for an autonomous system

In previous works we have defined a general architectural model for autonomous systems, which can easily be mapped to describe the functions of any automated system (SDAG-86-01), and we illustrated that model by applying it to the thermal management system of a space station (SDAG-87-01). In this note, we will further develop that application and design the detail of the implementation of such a model. First we present the environment of our application by describing the thermal management problem and an abstraction, which was called TESTBED, that includes a specific function for each module in the architecture, and the nature of the interfaces between each pair of blocks.

Three synergistic studies: A Manned Lunar Outpost, a Manned Mars Explorer, and an Antarctic Planetary Testbed

The students at the University of Houston College of Architecture undertook three synergistic studies during the 1987-1988 academic year. These studies included a Manned Lunar Outpost, a Manned Mars Explorer Mission, and an Antarctic Planetary Testbed which would provide the necessary data and facilities for testing proposed missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. All research was based on existing or near-term technology.

Simulation of the coupled multi-spacecraft control testbed at the Marshall Space Flight Center

The capture and berthing of a controlled spacecraft using a robotic manipulator is an important technology for future space missions and is presently being considered as a backup option for direct docking of the Space Shuttle to the Space Station during assembly missions. The dynamics and control of spacecraft configurations that are manipulator-coupled with each spacecraft having independent attitude control systems is not well understood and NASA is actively involved in both analytic research on this three dimensional control problem for manipulator coupled active spacecraft and experimental research using a two dimensional ground based facility at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). This paper first describes the MSFC testbed and then describes a two link arm simulator that has been developed to facilitate control theory development and test planning. The motion of the arms and the payload is controlled by motors located at the shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

Earth Observing System (EOS) Communication (Ecom) Modeling, Analysis, and Testbed (EMAT) activiy

This paper describes the Earth Observing System (EOS) Communication (Ecom) Modeling, Analysis, and Testbed (EMAT) activity performed by Code 540 in support of the Ecom project. Ecom is the ground-to-ground data transport system for operational EOS traffic. The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) Communications (Nascom) Division, Code 540, is responsible for implementing Ecom. Ecom interfaces with various systems to transport EOS forward link commands, return link telemetry, and science payload data. To understand the complexities surrounding the design and implementation of Ecom, it is necessary that sufficient testbedding, modeling, and analysis be conducted prior to the design phase. These activities, when grouped, are referred to as the EMAT activity. This paper describes work accomplished to date in each of the three major EMAT activities: modeling, analysis, and testbedding.

End-to-end communication test on variable length packet structures utilizing AOS testbed

This paper describes a communication test, which successfully demonstrated the transfer of losslessly compressed images in an end-to-end system. These compressed images were first formatted into variable length Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) packets in the Advanced Orbiting System Testbed (AOST). The CCSDS data Structures were transferred from the AOST to the Radio Frequency Simulations Operations Center (RFSOC), via a fiber optic link, where data was then transmitted through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The received data acquired at the White Sands Complex (WSC) was transferred back to the AOST where the data was captured and decompressed back to the original images. This paper describes the compression algorithm, the AOST configuration, key flight components, data formats, and the communication link characteristics and test results.

A land-surface Testbed for EOSDIS

The main objective of the Testbed project was to deliver satellite images via the Internet to scientific and educational users free of charge. The main method of operations was to store satellite images on a low cost tape library system, visually browse the raw satellite data, access the raw data filed, navigate the imagery through 'C' programming and X-Windows interface software, and deliver the finished image to the end user over the Internet by means of file transfer protocol methods. The conclusion is that the distribution of satellite imagery by means of the Internet is feasible, and the archiving of large data sets can be accomplished with low cost storage systems allowing multiple users.

The Advanced Orbiting Systems Testbed Program: Results to date

The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Recommendations for Packet Telemetry (PT) and Advanced Orbiting Systems (AOS) propose standard solutions to data handling problems common to many types of space missions. The Recommendations address only space/ground and space/space data handling systems. Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC's) AOS Testbed (AOST) Program was initiated to better understand the Recommendations and their impact on real-world systems, and to examine the extended domain of ground/ground data handling systems. The results and products of the Program will reduce the uncertainties associated with the development of operational space and ground systems that implement the Recommendations.

Dynamic Environment Communications Analysis Testbed (DECAT) and Its Applications to Dual Use Space Technology

The Communication System Simulation Laboratory (CSSL) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Johnson Space Center (JSC) provides a facility for analyzing simulating space communication systems. The CSSL has simulation tools that model NASA communication systems and the environment in which they operate. One of these tools is a radio frequency coverage analysis tool called the Dynamic Environment Communications Analysis Testbed (DECAT). This paper focuses on DECAT and its applications to the Space Station and Space Shuttle programs.

MEMS Spaceborne Testbed

Micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) technology can significantly reduce the cost to design, launch and operate space systems. MEMS technology offers low cost, small light weight and reliable devices which can significantly reduce the size, weight and cost of spacecraft while increasing their reliability through durability and redundancy. A standard spaceborne interface/cabinet that is readily available for experiments for inexpensive testing of MEMS devices in space is discussed. The MEMS testbed will provide fixtures for holding MEMS devices, ambient environment monitoring, an assortment of available operating voltages, RF and low frequency signal inputs, sources of various gases and pressure monitors, a command and control interface computer, and a data interface which will record or transmit the data and performance parameters of these small systems.

Construction and Modeling of a Controls Testbed

This paper describes the construction and modeling of a control system testbed to be used for the comparison of various control methodologies. We specifically wish to test fuzzy logic control and compare performance of various fuzzy controllers, including Hybrid Fuzzy-PID (HFPID) and Hierarchical Hybrid Fuzzy-PID (HHFPID) to other controllers including localized rate feedback, LQR/LTR, and H2/H(sub infinity). The control problem is that of vibration suppression in a thin plate with inputs coming from accelerometers and outputs going to piezoelectric actuators or 'patches'. A model based on experimental modal analysis of the plate is conducted and compared with an analytical model. The analytical model uses a boundary condition which is a mix of clamped and simply supported.

The CELSS Antarctic Analog Project: An Advanced Life Support Testbed at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica

CELSS Antarctic Analog Project (CAAP) represents a logical solution to the multiple objectives of both the NASA and the National Science Foundation (NSF). CAAP will result in direct transfer of proven technologies and systems, proven under the most rigorous of conditions, to the NSF and to society at large. This project goes beyond, as it must, the generally accepted scope of CELSS and life support systems including the issues of power generation, human dynamics, community systems, and training. CAAP provides a vivid and starkly realistic testbed of Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) and life support systems and methods. CAAP will also be critical in the development and validation of performance parameters for future advanced life support systems.
