Estimating unbiased horizontal velocity components from ST/MST radar measurements: A case study

In this paper a self-editing quick look procedure is presented for use at the Sunset radar. It is used for determining relatively unbiased hourly estimates of the u and v components of the wind. The technique presented here should be applicable to all height ranges, though only ST results are presented here. The vertical wind component, w, may be measured directly by pointing the radar beam straight up. The east and west components of the wind, u and v, however, must be estimated by projecting to the horizontal plane the radial velocity, vr, actually observed by pointing the radar suitably off zenith.

Failure characteristics of graphite-epoxy structural components loaded in compression

Failure characteristics of compressively loaded graphite-epoxy components are described. Experimental results for both strength-critical laminates and structural components with postbuckling strength are presented. Effects of low speed impact damage and circular holes on compressive strength are discussed. Delamination and shear crippling failure mechanisms that limit the performance of strength-critical laminates are described. Transverse shear and skin-stiffener separation failure mechanisms that limit the performance of components with postbuckling strength are also described. The influence of matrix properties on compressive strength improvements for impact damaged laminates is discussed. Experimental data and results from a failure analysis for strength-critical laminates with cutouts are discussed and compared with impact damage results. Typical postbuckling test results are compared with analytical predictions. Previously announced in STAR as N83-12174

Flight service evaluation of composite helicopter components

This first interim report presents the technical background for including environmental effects in the design of helicopter composite structures, and test results after approximately two year field exposure of components and panels. Composite structural components were removed from Sikorsky S-76 helicopters commercially operated in the Gulf Coast region of Louisiana. Fatigue tests were conducted for a graphite/epoxy tail rotor spar and static test for a graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy stabilizer. Graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy panels are being exposed to the outdoor environment in Stratford, Connecticut and West Palm Beach, Florida. For this reporting period the two year panels were returned, moisture measurements taken, and strength tests conducted. Results are compared with initial type certificate strengths for components and with initial laboratory coupon tests for the exposed panels. Comparisons are also presented with predicted and measured moisture contents.

The function of report components in the screening and reading of technical reports

A reader preference survey of engineers and scientists at the NASA Langley Research Center and in three professional/technical societies was conducted to determine the opinions of report users and producers concerning the format (organization) of NASA technical reports and the usage of technical report components. The survey questionnaire contained fourteen questions covering twelve survey topics. This article reports the findings of two survey topics: the components initially reviewed or read to determine whether to read a report in its entirety and the order in which report components are read.

Transient components in the Lyman lines of hot stars Evidence for the ejection of shells or puffs on very short timescales

The existence of H I transient components in the stellar wind of Epsilon Per toward eight early type stars observed by the Copernicus satellite is systematically investigated. It is shown that such transient components are indeed present in the spectra of five of these stars and have characteristics very similar to the one found in the case of Epsilon Per. It is shown that such components can be interpreted in terms of coherent 'puffs' or shells of matter ejected by the stars. They would be caused by an increase of the stellar mass loss rate by a factor of 1.5 to 3 during one hour or less, and would be accelerated more slowly than the quiet wind. It is suggested that such events must be due to instabilities in these stars which are all slightly evolved stars ranging in spectral types between O9 and B1. The instabilities are probably similar to those in Beta Cephei stars, i.e., nonradial pulsations.

The 3-D inelastic analysis methods for hot section components: Brief description

Advanced 3-D inelastic structural/stress analysis methods and solution strategies for more accurate yet more cost-effective analysis of components subjected to severe thermal gradients and loads in the presence of mechanical loads, with steep stress and strain gradients are being developed. Anisotropy, time and temperature dependent plasticity and creep effects are also addressed. The approach is to develop four different theories, one linear and three higher order theories (polynomial function, special function, general function). The theories are progressively more complex from linear to general function in order to provide streamlined analysis capability with increasing accuracy for each hot section component and for different parts of the same component according to the severity of the local stress, strain and temperature gradients associated with hot spots, cooling holes and surface coating cracks. To further enhance the computational effectiveness, the higher order theories will have embedded singularities (cooling passages, for example) in the generic modeling region. Each of the four theories consists of three formulation models derivable from independent theoretical formulations. These formulation models are based on: (1) mechanics of materials; (2) special finite elements; and (3) an advanced formulation to be recommended by the contractor.

Narrow Absorption Components in Be Star Winds

The stars omega Ori (B2 IIIe), 66 Oph (B2 IVe), and 59 Cyg (B1.5 IVe) are discussed. The extent to which the narrow absorption components in these Be stars differs from narrow components in the O stars and gamma Cas is explored. Any models or mechanisms for the formation of narrow absorption features in the UV resonance lines of Be star spectra must account for the presence of multiple narrow absorption features which are variable in number, radial velocity, and strength. Models predicting a high and low density structure to the stellar wind caused by instabilities in a flow driven by radiation pressure or by variable mass loss may be more successful in describing the behavior of winds in early Be stars. These models appear to be capable of producing single absorption components in the velocity range observed for O stars and very early Be stars.

Composite Loads Spectra for Select Space Propulsion Structural Components: Probabilistic Load Model Development

This effort is in support of the development of the expert system of computer codes to predict the loads on select structural components of a space propulsion engine. The development will be based primarily on the space shuttle main engine (SSME) test data base. Because of random variations of the many different sources of the loadings on the selected structural components and transients, a probabilistic approach to the problems was adopted. The goal of this task is to characterize all of the individual sources of loads at critical structural locations, such as the turbine blades, the transfer ducts, and liquid oxygen posts, using state-of-the-art probabilistic methods with varying levels of sophistication. The second phase of this work is the development of a composite load model based on a probabilistic synthesis of the individual load model previously developed. This model will be based on the stochastic combination of the load variables and not on the physical process for the combination of the individual loads to the composite load seen by the selected structural components.

On the anomalous component

The so-called anomalous cosmic ray component, which occurs at energies of about 10 MeV/nucleon and consists only of He, N, O, and Ne, has been a subject of interest for more than a decade. The origin of this component is generally considered to be interstellar neutral gas that is ionized and accelerated in the solar wind. The mechanism and the location for the acceleration, however, remains an unsolved problem. A model is used which includes the effects of gradient and curvature drifts and considers the implications of observed spatial gradients of the anomalous component for the location of the acceleration region. It is concluded that if drifts are important the acceleration region cannot lie at the solar poles. It is also concluded that there is no single region for the acceleration which can account for both the observed intensities and gradients in models which include drift effects.

The electromagnetic component of albedo from superhigh energy cascades in dense media

Albedo from cascades induced in iron by high energy gamma quanta were Monte Carlo simulated. Thereafter the albedo electromagnetic component from proton induced cascades were calculated analytically. The calculations showed that the albedo electromagnetic component increases more rapidly than the nuclear active component and will dominate at sufficiently high energies.

Design procedures for fiber composite structural components - Rods, beams, and beam columns

Step by step procedures are described which are used to design structural components (rods, columns, and beam columns) subjected to steady state mechanical loads and hydrothermal environments. Illustrative examples are presented for structural components designed for static tensile and compressive loads, and fatigue as well as for moisture and temperature effects. Each example is set up as a sample design illustrating the detailed steps that are used to design similar components.

High voltage-high power components for large space power distribution systems

Space power components including a family of bipolar power switching transistors, fast switching power diodes, heat pipe cooled high frequency transformers and inductors, high frequency conduction cooled transformers, high power-high frequency capacitors, remote power controllers and rotary power transfer devices were developed. Many of these components such as the power switching transistors, power diodes and the high frequency capacitor are commercially available. All the other components were developed to the prototype level. The dc/dc series resonant converters were built to the 25 kW level.

Utilization of non-conventional systems for conversion of biomass to food components: Potential for utilization of algae in engineered foods

The major nutritional components of the green algae (Scenedesmus obliquus) grown in a Constant Cell density Apparatus were determined. Suitable methodology to prepare proteins from which three major undesirable components of these cells (i.e., cell walls, nucleic acids, and pigments) were either removed or substantially reduced was developed. Results showed that processing of green algae to protein isolate enhances its potential nutritional and organoleptic acceptability as a diet component in a Controlled Ecological Life Support System.

The source of the intermediate wavelength component of the Earth's magnetic field

The intermediate wavelength component of the Earth's magnetic field has been well documented by observations made by MAGSAT. It has been shown that some significant fraction of this component is likely to be caused within the core of the Earth. Evidence for this comes from analysis of the intermediate wavelength component revealed by spherical harmonics between degrees 14 and 23, in which it is shown that it is unlikely that all of this signal is crustal. Firstly, there is no difference between average continental source strength and average oceanic source strength, which is unlikely to be the case if the anomalies reside within the crust, taking into account the very different nature and thickness of continental and oceanic crust. Secondly, there is almost no latitudinal variation in the source strength, which is puzzling if the sources are within the crust and have been formed by present or past magnetic fields with a factor of two difference in intensity between the equator and the poles. If however most of the sources for this field reside within the core, then these observations are not very surprising.

Chemical components of the Apollo 15 regolith

The lunar regolith is a complex mixture of many components. Compositional data is used to identify and estimate the relative importance of the various chemical components of the regolith. The results and conclusions of four methods that were applied to Apollo 15 regolith data were reviewed to determine the important chemical components: graphical techniques, analysis of individual soil particles, factor analysis, and multicomponent mixing models. This synthesis relies heavily on data and conclusions from the literature as well as new analyses on 28 regolith breccia samples, 28 soil samples, and 50 individual 1 to 2 mm particles from soil 15272.

Combined fringe and Fabry-Perot laser anemometer for three component velocity measurements in turbine stator cascade facility

A laser anemometer is described that was developed for use in a 508 mm diameter annular turbine stator cascade facility. All three velocity components are measured through a single restricted optical port, both within the stator vane row and downstream of the vanes. The measurements are made through a cylindrical window in the casing that matches the tip radius of the cascade. The stator tested has a contoured hub endwall that results in a large radial flow near the hub. The anemometer uses a standard fringe configuration (LFA) with a fluorescent aerosol seed to measure the axial and circumferential velocity components. The radial component is measured with a confocal Fabry-Perot interferometer. The two configurations are combined in a single optical system and can operate simultaneously. Data are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the system.

Research instrumentation for hot section components of turbine engines

Programs to develop research instrumentation for use on hot section components of turbine engines are discussed. These programs can be separated into two categories: one category includes instruments which can measure the environment within the combustor and turbine components, the other includes instruments which measure the response of engine components to the imposed environment. Included in the first category are instruments to measure total heat flux and fluctuating gas temperature. High temperature strain measuring systems, thin film sensors (e.g., turbine blade thermocouples) and a system to view the interior of a combustor during engine operation are programs which comprise the second category. The paper will describe the state of development of these sensors and measuring systems and, in some cases, show examples of measurements made with this instrumentation. The discussion will cover work done at NASA Lewis and at various contractor facilities.
