Hybrid holographic non-destructive test system

An automatic hybrid holographic non-destructive testing (HNDT) method and system capable of detecting flaws or debonds contained within certain materials are described. This system incorporates the techniques of optical holography, acoustical/optical holography and holographic correlation in determining the structural integrity of a test object. An automatic processing system including a detector and automatic data processor is used in conjunction with the three holographic techniques for correlating and interpreting the information supplied by the non-destructive systems. The automatic system also includes a sensor which directly translates an optical data format produced by the holographic techniques into electrical signals and then transmits this information to a digital computer for indicating the structural properties of the test object. The computer interprets the data gathered and determines whether further testing is necessary as well as the format of this new testing procedure.

Analog computation of auto and cross-correlation functions

For analysis of the data obtained from the cross beam systems it was deemed desirable to compute the auto- and cross-correlation functions by both digital and analog methods to provide a cross-check of the analysis methods and an indication as to which of the two methods would be most suitable for routine use in the analysis of such data. It is the purpose of this appendix to provide a concise description of the equipment and procedures used for the electronic analog analysis of the cross beam data. A block diagram showing the signal processing and computation set-up used for most of the analog data analysis is provided. The data obtained at the field test sites were recorded on magnetic tape using wide-band FM recording techniques. The data as recorded were band-pass filtered by electronic signal processing in the data acquisition systems.

Aircraft simulation data management - A prototype system

Piloted flight simulations are used throughout the aircraft development process to evaluate design concepts, handling qualities and operational procedures. Simulation project managers are often inundated with data but without a convenient and efficient way to make the correlations and analyses necessary to evaluate system performance. A computer-based Simulation Management System (SIMS) is under development. SIMS will permit simulation project engineers to quickly acquire, access, display, edit, analyze, and document the information necessary to more efficiently manage the research program. SIMS features interactive, associative access to simulation data. This paper describes SIMDEM, a prototype system designed to demonstrate these concepts and procedures in order to obtain feedback from simulator users to guide system design.

Hoop/column antenna RF verification model. Volume 2: Analysis and correlation

As part of the Large Space System Technology Program, the theoretical and experimental results of the RF characteristic of a hoop/column, quad aperture antenna using an RF verification model are presented. To satisfy the primary purposes of the model, experimental pattern data is provided for the quad aperture configuration at different reflector edge illumination levels, from which the geometry and edge effects can be assessed, and experimental data which can be compared with calculations using various theoretical reflector scattering formulae are provided. It also experimentally determines the effects upon secondary patterns of scale model quartz cables, as used in the hoop/column design, upon secondary patterns in order to assess the importance of developing a scattering theory to predict such effects. In addition, a comprehensive theoretical study and the experimental pattern results of quad aperture antenna feeds, a discussion of the fundamental affect of parasitic side lobes, their amplitude, and location in space.

Error analysis of optical correlators

With the growing interest in using binary phase only filters (BPOF) in optical correlators that are implemented on magnetooptic spatial light modulators, an understanding of the effect of errors in system alignment and optical components is critical in obtaining optimal system performance. We present simulations of optical correlator performance degradation in the presence of eight errors. We break these eight errors into three groups: 1) alignment errors, 2) errors due to a combination of component imperfections and alignment errors, and 3) errors which result solely from non-ideal components. Under the first group, we simulate errors in the distance from the object to the first principle plane of the transform lens, the distance from the second principle plane of the transform lens to the filter plane, and rotational misalignment of the input mask with the filter mask. Next we consider errors which result from a combination of alignment and component imperfections. These include errors in the transform lens, the phase compensation lens, and the inverse Fourier transform lens. Lastly we have the component errors resulting from the choice of spatial light modulator. These include contrast error and phase errors caused by the non-uniform flatness of the masks. The effects of each individual error are discussed, and the result of combining all eight errors under assumptions of reasonable tolerances and system parameters is also presented. Conclusions are drawn as to which tolerances are most critical for optimal system performance.

Clues in the rare gas isotopes to early solar system history

Rare gases in meteorites and lunar samples are discussed stimulating the discovery of the solar wind. Radioactive isotopes are examined, making a correlation to the origin of the solar system. It is shown that the heights of the peaks above the horizontal lines represent the spectrum of the fissiogenic sample. Nuclear tracks of iodine, xenon, and plutonium detected in lunar rocks are also explained.

Electromagnetic Modeling of Wind tunnel Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems

An analytical framework for the open-loop behavior of a permanent magnet element levitated within an applied magnetic field are shown, in the context of application to wind tunnel Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems (MSBS). Various modes of motion are identified, which correlate with observed behavior of the NASA/ODU 6-inch MSBS. This system is being developed as a technology demonstrator for dynamic stability testing of atmospheric entry capsules, with possible application to a supersonic wind tunnel. The analytic equations are populated with field information from experimental measurements and a finite element model. Finally, a system simulation can provide alternative estimates of system dynamic behavior via model linearization, with preliminary comparisons presented. Taken together, the analytical framework, experimental measurement, finite element analysis, and dynamic simulation provide a complete understanding of the characteristics and behavior of the MSBS.

Digital Image Correlation Techniques Applied to Large Scale Rocket Engine Testing

Rocket engine hot-fire ground testing is necessary to understand component performance, reliability and engine system interactions during development. The J-2X upper stage engine completed a series of developmental hot-fire tests that derived performance of the engine and components, validated analytical models and provided the necessary data to identify where design changes, process improvements and technology development were needed. The J-2X development engines were heavily instrumented to provide the data necessary to support these activities which enabled the team to investigate any anomalies experienced during the test program. This paper describes the development of an optical digital image correlation technique to augment the data provided by traditional strain gauges which are prone to debonding at elevated temperatures and limited to localized measurements. The feasibility of this optical measurement system was demonstrated during full scale hot-fire testing of J-2X, during which a digital image correlation system, incorporating a pair of high speed cameras to measure three-dimensional, real-time displacements and strains was installed and operated under the extreme environments present on the test stand. The camera and facility setup, pre-test calibrations, data collection, hot-fire test data collection and post-test analysis and results are presented in this paper.

A correlation between colors of Jovian clouds and their 5-micron temperatures.

Observations of Jupiter at 5 microns by Keay, Low, and Rieke were compared with color photographs by Minton and Kutoroff taken near the same epoch. A strong correlation is evident between the 5-micron temperature distribution on the Jupiter disk and the cloud colors. Further comparison is made with photographs in the .888-micron CH4 absorption band. Strong correlations exist for features in System II latitudes at all three wavelegths but not for those that move with System I. This is attributed to more intensive convection in the Equatorial Zone. Owen's suggestion that colors may result from at least two mechanisms appears valid; a third appears responsible for blue features only.

Research in large adaptive antenna arrays

The feasibility of microwave holographic imaging of targets near the earth using a large random conformal array on the earth's surface and illumination by a CW source on a geostationary satellite is investigated. A geometrical formulation for the illuminator-target-array relationship is applied to the calculation of signal levels resulting from L-band illumination supplied by a satellite similar to ATS-6. The relations between direct and reflected signals are analyzed and the composite resultant signal seen at each antenna element is described. Processing techniques for developing directional beam formation as well as SNR enhancement are developed. The angular resolution and focusing characteristics of a large array covering an approximately circular area on the ground are determined. The necessary relations are developed between the achievable SNR and the size and number of elements in the array. Numerical results are presented for possible air traffic surveillance system. Finally, a simple phase correlation experiment is defined that can establish how large an array may be constructed.

Recent developments at JPL in the application of digital image processing techniques to astronomical images

Several techniques of a digital image-processing nature are illustrated which have proved useful in visual analysis of astronomical pictorial data. Processed digital scans of photographic plates of Stephans Quintet and NGC 4151 are used as examples to show how faint nebulosity is enhanced by high-pass filtering, how foreground stars are suppressed by linear interpolation, and how relative color differences between two images recorded on plates with different spectral sensitivities can be revealed by generating ratio images. Analyses are outlined which are intended to compensate partially for the blurring effects of the atmosphere on images of Stephans Quintet and to obtain more detailed information about Saturn's ring structure from low- and high-resolution scans of the planet and its ring system. The employment of a correlation picture to determine the tilt angle of an average spectral line in a low-quality spectrum is demonstrated for a section of the spectrum of Uranus.

Long-term migration of the solar sector structure

The magnetic sector boundaries on the sun and in the solar wind are shown to have a high correlation with winter low pressure systems on earth. The vorticity-area index typically declines by about 10% during several days centered on the time when a sector boundary sweeps past the earth. Evidence that both the sector structure and solar activity levels can be understood as being under the influence of the same regular, internal solar mechanism is presented.

Investigations of respiratory control systems simulation

The Grodins' respiratory control model was investigated and it was determined that the following modifications were necessary before the model would be adaptable for current research efforts: (1) the controller equation must be modified to allow for integration of the respiratory system model with other physiological systems; (2) the system must be more closely correlated to the salient physiological functionings; (3) the respiratory frequency and the heart rate should be expanded to illustrate other physiological relationships and dependencies; and (4) the model should be adapted to particular individuals through a better defined set of initial parameter values in addition to relating these parameter values to the desired environmental conditions. Several of Milhorn's respiratory control models were also investigated in hopes of using some of their features as modifications for Grodins' model.

Wind Energy System Time-domain (WEST) analyzers using hybrid simulation techniques

Two stand-alone analyzers constructed for real time simulation of the complex dynamic characteristics of horizontal-axis wind energy systems are described. Mathematical models for an aeroelastic rotor, including nonlinear aerodynamic and elastic loads, are implemented with high speed digital and analog circuitry. Models for elastic supports, a power train, a control system, and a rotor gimbal system are also included. Limited correlation efforts show good comparisons between results produced by the analyzers and results produced by a large digital simulation. The digital simulation results correlate well with test data.
