Electronic strain-level counter

Counter for aircraft counts and records number of times the strain at a point in a structural member exceeds each of four preset levels. Counter uses 28 volt dc power supply, metallic resistance strain gage bridge as sensor, integrated and solid state circuits for signal processing, and electromechanical counters for data storage and readout.

Space shuttle propulsion systems on-board checkout and monitoring system development study (extension). Volume 1: Summary and technical results

An analysis was conducted of the space shuttle propulsion systems to define the onboard checkout and monitoring function. A baseline space shuttle vehicle and mission were used to establish the techniques and approach for defining the requirements. The requirements were analyzed to formulate criteria for implementing the functions of preflight checkout, performance monitoring, fault isolation, emergency detection, display, data storage, postflight evaluation, and maintenance retest.

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

A program for the measurement and analysis of the depolarization and differential attenuation that occur when millimeter wave signals propagate through rain is described. Initial data are taken along a 1.43 km path at 17.65 GHz and a supporting theoretical model is developed to relate the propagation effects to rainfall rate and wind velocity. A block diagram of the overall experiment is included. It consists of: (1) an RF system (millimeter wave transmitter and receiver), (2) transmitting and receiving antennas, (3) a weather system with rain gauges, wind sensors, and drop counters, and (4) a digital control, processing, and data storage system.

Summary of design and blade-element performance data for 12 axial-flow pump rotor configurations

A collection of noncavitating blade-element performance data for 12 axial-flow pump rotor configurations is presented in tabular form. Rotor design philosophy, test apparatus and procedure, and data reduction and evaluation are discussed. A data storage and recall computer program is described. All but one of the rotor configurations considered were composed of double-circular-arc blade sections and were designed for high inlet relative flow angles. Hub-tip radius ranged from 0.40 to 0.90.

Computer programs for the solution of systems of linear algebraic equations

FORTRAN subprograms for the solution of systems of linear algebraic equations are described, listed, and evaluated in this report. Procedures considered are direct solution, iteration, and matrix inversion. Both incore methods and those which utilize auxiliary data storage devices are considered. Some of the subroutines evaluated require the entire coefficient matrix to be in core, whereas others account for banding or sparceness of the system. General recommendations relative to equation solving are made, and on the basis of tests, specific subprograms are recommended.

The data processor from the small scientific satellite

A reprogrammable data system aboard a small scientific satellite is described that samples and processes magnetospheric measurements for transmission to the ground. The lightweight configuration of the data system is made up of the program memory, data storage, input/output module, and a central processing unit. The system is designed for multiple missions.

Evolution of the satellite telemetry data processing facility at the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Data from scientific and application satellites managed by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center are acquired through the world-wide Spacecraft Tracking and Data Network (STDN). These data are forwarded to a central telemetry data processing facility whose primary objective is the timely provision of the data to users in a form suitable for their analysis. In a successful evolution, a satellite data processing facility must adapt to changing support requirements while operationally supporting active spacecraft. Advances in the technology of data transmission, data storage systems, and file management make it feasible to implement a third-generation system which will be able to satisfy experimenter requirements for the next ten years.

Holography: A survey

The development of holography and the state of the art in recording and displaying information, microscopy, motion, pictures, and television applications are discussed. In addition to optical holography, information is presented on microwave, acoustic, ultrasonic, and seismic holography. Other subjects include data processing, data storage, pattern recognition, and computer-generated holography. Diagrams of holographic installations are provided. Photographs of typical holographic applications are used to support the theoretical aspects.

An algorithm for a general class of routing problems derived from Huygens' principle

If a set of N points or nodes with a nonnegative cost associated with each ordered pair is known, it is desired to find a path from one given node to another given node which minimizes the cost sum. An algorithm is presented which yields a global minimum solution after at most N - 1 iterations or on a typical large third-generation computer, after 1 hour of computation time for a 10,000-node problem. The rapid-access data storage capacity demanded by the algorithm is approximately 3N words for costs read in from slow-access storage or 2N words for calculable costs. The time-storage requirements of the algorithm known to the authors. When the problem is viewed as a discretized optimal control problem, after N-1 iterations, an optimal control or node transition is established for each of the N nodes or states; thus, the algorithm can be applied to situations were there may be errors in the control that necessitate a closed loop control that necessitate a closed loop control philosophy.
