Cryogenic strain gage techniques used in force balance design for the National Transonic Facility

A force balance is a strain gage transducer used in wind tunnels to measure the forces and moments on aerodynamic models. Techniques have been established for temperature-compensation of force balances to allow their use over the operating temperature range of a cryogenic wind tunnel (-190C to 60C) without thermal control. This was accomplished by using a patented strain gage matching process to minimize inherent thermal differences, and a thermal compensation procedure to reduce the remaining thermally-induced outputs to acceptable levels. A method of compensating for mechanical movement of the axial force measuring beam caused by thermally-induced stresses under transient temperatures was also included.

Pump instability phenomena generated by fluid forces

Rotor dynamic behavior of high energy centrifugal pumps is significantly affected by two types of fluid forces; one due to the hydraulic interaction of the impeller with the surrounding volute or diffuser and the other due to the effect of the wear rings. The available data on these forces is first reviewed. A simple one degree-of-freedom system containing these forces is analytically solved to exhibit the rotor dynamic effects. To illustrate the relative magnitude of these phenomena, an example of a multistage boiler feed pump is worked out. It is shown that the wear ring effects tend to suppress critical speed and postpone instability onset. But the volute-impeller forces tend to lower the critical speed and the instability onset speed. However, for typical boiler feed pumps under normal running clearances, the wear ring effects are much more significant than the destabilizing hydraulic interaction effects.

Technique for measuring side forces on a banked aircraft with a free-swiveling nose gear

An experimental investigation was conducted at the Langley Research Center to determine a method for towing an aircraft to measure the side forces of a free-swiveling nose gear due to variations in bank angle. A F-106 aircraft and the Space Shuttle orbiter OV-101 were towed to measure side forces on full-size aircraft for bank angles up to 3 deg. These tests indicate that substantial side forces will occur if an aircraft is rolling on a runway in a banked attitude even when the nose gear is free to swivel. Corotation of a twin-tire nose gear appears to cause a substantial increase in side force due to bank angle compared with a nose gear with indepdendently rotating wheels.

The force on the flex: Global parallelism and portability

A parallel programming methodology, called the force, supports the construction of programs to be executed in parallel by an unspecified, but potentially large, number of processes. The methodology was originally developed on a pipelined, shared memory multiprocessor, the Denelcor HEP, and embodies the primitive operations of the force in a set of macros which expand into multiprocessor Fortran code. A small set of primitives is sufficient to write large parallel programs, and the system has been used to produce 10,000 line programs in computational fluid dynamics. The level of complexity of the force primitives is intermediate. It is high enough to mask detailed architectural differences between multiprocessors but low enough to give the user control over performance. The system is being ported to a medium scale multiprocessor, the Flex/32, which is a 20 processor system with a mixture of shared and local memory. Memory organization and the type of processor synchronization supported by the hardware on the two machines lead to some differences in efficient implementations of the force primitives, but the user interface remains the same. An initial implementation was done by retargeting the macros to Flexible Computer Corporation's ConCurrent C language. Subsequently, the macros were caused to directly produce the system calls which form the basis for ConCurrent C. The implementation of the Fortran based system is in step with Flexible Computer Corporations's implementation of a Fortran system in the parallel environment.

Traction forces at solid-lubricated rolling/sliding contacts

A single-element traction rig was used to measure the traction forces at a solid-lubricated contact of a ball against a flat disk at room temperature under combine rolling and sliding. The load and speed conditions were selected to match those anticipated for bearing applications in adiabatic diesel engines. Traction vs slide/roll ratio curves were similar to those for liquid lubricants but the traction forces were an order of magnitude higher. The test data were used to derive equations to predict traction force as a function of contact stress and rolling speed. The data showed that the magnitude of traction forces were almost the same for all the lubricants tested. The lubricants, should, therefore, be selected on the basis of their ability to limit the wear of contact surfaces.

Experimental measurements of hydrodynamic radial forces and stiffness matrices for a centrifugal pump-impeller

Measurements of the steady-state hydrodynamic forces on a centrifugal pump impeller are presented as a function of position within two geometrically different volutes. These correspond to the forces experienced by the impeller at zero whirl frequency. The hydrodynamic force matrices derived from these measurements exhibit both diagonal and off-diagonal terms of substantial magnitude. These terms are of the form which would tend to excite a whirl motion in a rotordynamic analysis of the pump; this may be the cause of 'rough running' reported in many pumps. Static pressure measurements in the impeller discharge flow show that the hydrodynamic force on the impeller contains a substantial component due to the nonisotropy of the net momentum flux leaving the impeller. A similar breakdown of the contributions to the stiffness matrices reveals that the major component of these matrices results from the nonisotropy of the momentum flux.

Identification of nonlinear structural elements by force-state mapping

A major contributor to the passive damping and potentially nonlinear behavior of large space structures is the behavior of the joints. Proposed is an experimental technique called 'force-state mapping' that will allow ground testing of these key structural elements. The technique includes the use of very accurate instrumentation to measure the force transmission properties of a structural element as a function of its mechanical state. When these data are presented in the form of a force-state map, the nonlinearities exhibit distinctively recognizable patterns. This presentation of the data allows the extraction of the describing parameters of the linear and nonlinear behavior and the energy dissipation characteristics of the joint. A series of tests were carried out on an idealized laboratory test article to demonstrate the technique. Strong structural nonlinearities, including a cubic hardening spring, friction, and impact phenomena, were introduced and measured. Parameters identified by the force-state mapping technique are compared with those made by traditional techniques and the errors involved in the measurement are estimated.

Equilibrium of magnetic fields with arbitrary interweaving of the lines of force. I - Discontinuities in the torsion

Consideration is given to the static force-free equilibrium of a magnetic field in which all of the lines of force connect without knotting between parallel planes. The field is formed by continuous deformation from an initial uniform field, and is conventiently described in terms of the scalar function psi, which is the stream function for the incompressible wrapping and interweaving of the lines of force. Local compression and expansion of the lines of force is described in terms of the scalar function Phi. Equilibrium in the field requires satisfaction of two independent equations which cannot be accomplished without the full freedom of both psi and Phi. It is shown that discontinuities in the torsional characteristics of the lines occur when psi is predetermined by an arbitrary pattern. Discontinuities in the winding pattern of the lines can lead to discontinuities in the associated current sheets.

Head movements in non-terrestrial force environments elicit motion sickness - Implications for the etiology of space motion sickness

Space motion sickness has become an operational concern in manned space flight. Considerable evidence exists that head movements in free fall, especially pitch movements, are provocative until adaptation occurs. The question arises whether space motion sickness is an unique nosological entity or is due to body movements in a nonterrestrial force environment, a force environment for which the body's dynamic sensory-motor adaptions to 1 G are no longer appropriate. To evaluate this issue, subjects were asked to make controlled head movements during exposure to high gravitoinertial force levels, 1.8-2.0 G, in parabolic flight maneuvers. Head movements in pitch with eyes open were most evocative of motion sickness, yaw movements with eyes covered were least provocative. This pattern is identical to that which occurs when the same types of head movements are made in the free fall phase of parabolic maneuvers. It appears that space motion sickness is the consequence of prolonged exposure to a nonterrestrial force background rather than of exposure to free fall per se.

Atmospheric tidal forcing of the zonal-mean circulation - The Martian dusty atmosphere

Classical atmospheric tidal theory has been used to compute the bilinear tidal zonal-mean forcing per unit mass of the zonal-mean meridional and zonal winds, together with the tidal zonal-mean heating per unit mass for the dusty Martian atmosphere. The convergences of the tidal Eliassen-Palm (EP) flux have been computed for both clear and dusty atmospheric conditions, including the special case of a 'dusty corridor' in the summer southern subtropics that is meant to simulate the early stages of a planetary-scale Martian dust storm. The calculation of the tidal EP zonal forcing differs from Hamilton in that more realistic thermotidal forcings and basic state temperatures are used. The zonal-mean convergences of the tidal fluxes of heat and momentum are large during a Martian great dust storm and should alter significantly the zonal-mean circulation and its residual component driven by the zonal-mean heating. In particular, the tidal forcing of the meridional wind, which is an order of magnitude greater than its zonal counterpart, is likely to give rise to a complex pattern of significantly ageostrophic zonal-mean flow in the Martian tropics.

Identification of nonlinear system parameters in joints using the force-state mapping technique

A procedure is presented for identifying the potentially strong nonlinear properties of structural members, such as joints, by expressing the force transmitted by the member as a function of its mechanical state. By explicitly including position and rate dependent effects, the surface of transmitted force versus state, the force-state map, has distinct, unique, superposable features for common structural nonlinearities, even those which appear to indicate hysteresis on a force-stroke presentation. An analysis is performed on the influence of true memory effects, transient response, and uncertainty in the measurements and system mass on the precision of the procedure. The successful identification of simulated data verifies the accuracy of the identification algorithm. Tests are then conducted on three actual joint models, with incomplete state measurements typical of an actual testing environment. The ability of the procedure to estimate the complete state vector and to analyze and reconstruct the measured nonlinear characteristics is demonstrated.

Blade-Tip-Clearance Forces in Turbines

Study reviews field and proposes experiments. Report summarizes present knowledge and discusses plans for experiments on blade-tipclearance excitation forces in turbines. Of particular interest Alford forces, named after pioneering worker in this field. These are cross forces due to uneven clearances, which in turn caused by and also cause rotor vibrations. Because blade-tip clearances affect turbine efficiency and excitation forces affect rotor stability, report proves useful to researchers and designers of advanced turbomachinery.

Experimental study of unsteady hydrodynamic force matrices on whirling centrifugal pump impellers

An experimental facility was constructed and instrumented. A set of centrifugal flow pumps whose impellers were made to follow a controlled circular whirl motion were studied. The aim was to characterize the steady and unsteady fluid forces measured on the impeller under various pump operating conditions. The postulation was that the unsteady lateral forces result from interactions between the impeller and the surrounding diffuser and/or volute (via the working fluid), and that under certain flow regimes these forces can drive unstable lateral motions of the pump rotor. The lateral hydrodynamic forces were decomposed into their steady and unsteady parts, the latter being further expressed in terms of a generalized fluid stiffness matrix. Conclusions regarding the effect of impeller geometry could not be reached given the similarity of the tested designs. However, other results on phenomena such as skin friction and leakage flow are presented. Some of the findings are compared to experimental and theoretical data from other sources. Finally, the rotordynamic consequences of the results are discussed as the present data were applied to the case of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) High Pressure Oxidizer Turbopump (HPOTP).

Calculation of forces on magnetized bodies using COSMIC NASTRAN

The methods described may be used with a high degree of confidence for calculations of magnetic traction forces normal to a surface. In this circumstance all models agree, and test cases have resulted in theoretically correct results. It is shown that the tangential forces are in practice negligible. The surface pole method is preferable to the virtual work method because of the necessity for more than one NASTRAN run in the latter case, and because distributed forces are obtained. The derivation of local forces from the Maxwell stress method involves an undesirable degree of manipulation of the problem and produces a result in contradiction of the surface pole method.

Forebody and missile side forces and the time analogy

A review of the 2-D, impulsively started cylinder literature is given to identify a number of physical parameters that can impact the nondimensional time at which vortex asymmetries begin. These parameters are then related to 3-D testing and explain the lack of data repeatability. The implications of these parameters on 3-D computational modeling is also discussed. An ad hoc form of the time analogy is then used to analyze and organize a slender body data base. An important result of the analysis is that the sectional side force in the nose region is a key to understanding the side force behavior for the configuration as a whole. The nose side force at the first pressure station is shown, for the data analyzed, to uniquely determine the rest of the side force development for laminar flow and to correlate with roll orientation independent of angle of attack and Reynolds number.

Distribution of resistive body-force in curved free-surface flow

The customary procedure for including resistive effects in turbulent hydraulic and stratified atmospheric flows is to integrate the empirically-known boundary shears over the entire wetted boundary of a thin fluid slab. A resistive body-force is then assumed to exist everywhere in each slab to replace the boundary shearing force. For the classical Saint-Venant (1871) model, this body-force can be shown to have a constant distribution in the vertical direction, and therefore can be evaluated for use in the momentum differential equation. In the newer Dressler theory (1978), however, for unsteady flow over curved beds, it is proved here that a constant body-force distribution is not possible. Its variable distribution is determined as well as its magnitude for use in the curved-flow equations. This variable distribution acts to produce an equal resultant in every thin layer of fluid parallel to the bed in an angular wedge over the curved channel bed. The new curved-flow equations are therefore extended to include resistive effects.

Multiple-mode nonlinear free and forced vibrations of beams using finite element method

Effects of large deflection geometric nonlinearity and multiple modes for free and forced vibrations of beams are investigated. Inplane displacement and inplane inertia are included in the formulation. The finite element method is employed. A harmonic force matrix is derived for forced vibration analysis. The relations of amplitude, frequency ratio and forcing intensity for beams of different boundary conditions and various load conditions are presented.
