Solar/hydrogen systems assessment. Volume 1: Solar/hydrogen systems for the 1985 - 2000 time frame

Opportunities for commercialization of systems capable of producing hydrogen from solar energy were studied. The hydrogen product costs that might be achieved by the four selected candidate systems was compared with the pricing structure and practices of the commodity gas market. Subsequently, product cost and market price match was noted to exist in the small user sector of the hydrogen marketplace. Barriers to and historical time lags in, commercialization of new technologies are reviewed. Recommendations for development and demonstration programs designed to accelerate the commercialization of the candidate systems are presented.

Effective constitutive relations for large repetitive frame-like structures

Effective mechanical properties for large repetitive framelike structures are derived using combinations of strength of material and orthogonal transformation techniques. Symmetry considerations are used in order to identify independent property constants. The actual values of these constants are constructed according to a building block format which is carried out in the three consecutive steps: (1) all basic planar lattices are identified; (2) effective continuum properties are derived for each of these planar basic grids using matrix structural analysis methods; and (3) orthogonal transformations are used to determine the contribution of each basic set to the overall effective continuum properties of the structure.

Solar/hydrogen systems for the 1985-2000 time frame - A review and assessment

A comprehensive state-of-the-art review of solar/hydrogen technologies has been conducted. From this, solar/hydrogen production systems which could be commercialized by the year 2000 have been characterized technically and economically. Incentives and disincentives for the early commercialization of four solar/hydrogen systems have been explored, conclusions drawn and recommendations made.

Establishment of terrestrial reference frames by new observational techniques

It is anticipated that terrestrial reference systems for geodynamics studies which include adopted plate motion models will be introduced for the analysis of both LAGEOS satellite and very long baseline interferometry ranging data. One of the possible approaches involves adjustment of ground station coordinates in conjunction with solutions for Universal Time 1 (UT1) and polar motions as functions of time. Another method uses principal value decomposition to reduce the number of degrees of freedom being solved for by three. In a third alternative, the values of UT1 and polar motion derived from the available data by means of the initial set of coordinates are kept fixed, and an appropriate block of data is reanalyzed using the previously determined values of UT1 and polar motion so that a new set of station coordinates can be derived.

Radiation exchange in large space structures and frames

The analysis of radiation heat transfer is determined by the need to determine the geometrical quantity, F(ij), which is commonly called the view factor, and which represents the fraction of energy leaving surface i which strikes surface j. The present investigation shows that the use of a rotating plane to model a one-dimensional radiation element is both computationally efficient and accurate. Because of the reduced computational cost of this element, radiation view factors for complex structures can be calculated directly. Under some conditions, the characteristics of the one-dimensional element may lead to a loss in accuracy when it is used to model obstructing cylinders. In cases in which the element is too close to the radiating surfaces, curved surfaces must be represented by a collection of flat planes. However, it appears that as long as the one-dimensional element is more than 5 diameters from the other surfaces, its use is valid.

Joint For Erectable and Collapsible Frames

Joint mechanism allows truss structure to be folded and stowed in small space. Mechanism includes hinge attached to two truss elements connected by two links, tension bar, and compression bar. When folded elements are released, springs in joint mechanism rotate truss elements about hinge and lock mechanism to form single member. Developed for structures erected in space (antennas, solar panels, solar sails, and masts), joint mechanism adaptable to window-opening struts, folding furniture and television antennas.

Designing a priority driven multi-frame rate flight executive

The Advanced Transport Operating System (ATOPS) project is a NASA operational research flight project which is concerned with upgrading the new generation of flight computers. In connection with this work, it becomes also necessary to reassess the adequacy of the flight executive and flight software. In the present discussion, attention is given to the ATOPS project upgrade, the operating flight system, the design criteria for the new flight executive, the implementation of the executive, a sample real-time execution, a real-time debug and test tool, and several experiences which could be useful to others considering a similar exercise.

A global geodetic reference frame from Lageos ranging (SL5.1AP)

A summary of the results obtained for a new comprehensive geodetic parameter solution from the analysis of Lageos laser ranging data for the period May 1976 to the end of 1982 is presented. Estimates of each component of the polar motion and earth rotation, the station coordinates, the value of the earth's gravitational constant GM, and the elements of the Lageos orbit comprise this SL5.1AP solution. The results differ from previously published values primarily through incorporation of more rigorous dynamic models for the ocean and solid earth tides. The precision of the geodetic parameters are on average 5-marc sec polar motion, 0.2-ms length of day, better than 5-cm center-of-mass geodetic positioning, 3-cm global baselines, and 2-cm regional baselines. An assessment of the contribution of systematic errors in the interstation distance determination is presented.

On the orientation of ephemeris reference frames

Precession corrections, equinox motions and locations, and obliquities for the FK4 are determined from laser-ranging data only by the ephemeris-fitting method of Standish (1982) and compared with those calculated by Fricke (1971 and 1982) from optical observations. The theoretical basis of the comparison is explained, and the results are presented in a table. No significant differences are found in the equinox offset and equinox motion values, and good agreement is found in the equinox location. The ephemeris-fitting obliquity values are shown to be consistent to within 10 marcsec and to be about 20 marcsec lower than the optical values.

Inflight observability of gyro reference frame misalignment

The effect of gyro misalignment on the attitude knowledge error (AKE) in a strapdown environment is analyzed. The subject attitude knowledge is defined, and the equation of motion is derived considering only the initial AKE and the misalignment. These two error sources are shown to be different. The closed-form solution to the equation of motion is presented, and an important theorem concerning the error induced by the initial AKE and misalignment is proven. The observability of misalignment in an ideal update environment where three cases of AKE can be measured simultaneously is examined. The misalignment observability in an infinitesimal field of view line of sight sensor update design is discussed. It is concluded that attitude error in a strapdown gyro application due to gyro misalignment is a conservative function of the attitude only.

The coordinate frame of the lunar laser ranging network

The geocentric coordinates for four instruments, which were derived using lunar laser ranging, are compared with the 84L02 coordinates determined from the Lageos satellite. The determination of the geocentric coordinates for the 2.7 m and McDonald Observatory laser ranging system telescopes at McDonald Observatory, the Haleakala site, and the CERGA site near Grasse, France is described. Consideration is given to the McDonald Observatory colocation and station motion due to continential drift. A rms difference of 18 cm is determined for the two sets of geocentric coordinates; however, removing a data anomaly reduces the rms difference to 13 cm.
