Interlaminar stress singularities at a straight free edge in composite laminates

A quasi three dimensional finite element analysis was used to analyze the edge stress problem in four-ply, composite laminates. Convergence studies were made to explore the existence of stress singularities near the free edge. The existence of stress singularities at the intersection of the interface and the free edge is confirmed.

Inelastic behavior of structural components

A more accurate procedure was developed for the determination of the inelastic behavior of structural components. The actual stress-strain curve for the mathematical of the structure was utilized to generate the force-deformation relationships for the structural elements, rather than using simplified models such as elastic-plastic, bilinear and trilinear approximations. relationships were generated for beam elements with various types of cross sections. In the generational of these curves, stress or load reversals, kinematic hardening and hysteretic behavior were taken into account. Intersections between loading and unloading branches were determined through an iterative process. Using the inelastic properties obtained, the plastic static response of some simple structural systems composed of beam elements was computed. Results were compared with known solutions, indicating a considerable improvement over response predictions obtained by means of simplified approximations used in previous investigations.

Extreme ultraviolet observations from Voyager 2 encounter with Jupiter

The extensive Voyager 2 EUV spectral observations of the Jovian planetary system have produced a number of significant results. The positions of the auroral zones have been defined with the aid of support imaging to the extent that the aurora is now known to correspond to the location of the planetary magnetic field lines intersecting the Io plasma torus. The observations do not preclude the possibility of a simultaneous magnetotail aurora, but if present it must not be a dominant component. Emission in molecular hydrogen has been detected from the equatorial regions of Jupiter, which indicates planetwide electron precipitation. Hydrogen Lyman alpha from the dark side of the planet has been measured at an intensity of about 1 kilorayleigh. Occultation of Alpha Leonis by Jupiter has been observed, and the data are being analyzed in detail.

The condensation and fractionation of refractory lithophile elements

It is noted that Cr, Mg, and Si are fractionated in chondritic material along with, but to a lesser extent than, a large group of more refractory elements. These patterns are reexamined with the reasoning that this might imply some unique distribution at the time of fractionation. It is shown that apparently two distinct fractionization patterns can be resolved: one involving ordinary and enstatite chondrites and the other involving carbonaceous chondrites, the earth, the moon, and the eucrite parent body. It is noted that the two trends intersect at C1 composition. Attention is given to the range in which the largest fraction of planetary matter condenses. It is concluded that the appearance of large amounts of condensed materials is conceivably in some way related to the fractionization process, although the exact relationship cannot be specified.

U-Th-Pb age of the Barwell chondrite - Anatomy of a 'discordant' meteorite

A Pb-Pb internal isochron for the Barwell L5-6 chondrite yields an age of 4.530 plus or minus 0.005 billion years, using the measured U-238/U-235 ratio of 135.24 plus or minus .17. If the terrestrial U isotope composition is used, an age of 4.559 billion years is obtained. The Pb isotopic composition is distinctly different from that of a terrestrial contaminant found in the fusion crust of the Barwell stone. When the U-Th-Pb data are plotted on the concordia diagram, the data define a line that intersects the concordia curve at approximately 4.53 and 0 billion years, and nearly all of the data plot above the concordia curve, regardless of the initial Pb correction. This discordancy and the Pb isotopic composition of the triolite are attributed to a recent reequilibration of Pb and not to terrestrial contamination.

Earth-crossing asteroids - Orbital classes, collision rates with earth, and origin

Asteroids that can intersect the orbit of the earth are discussed, which include Aten asteroids (semimajor axis (a) less than 1 AU, aphelion greater than 0.983 AU), Apollo asteroids (a greater than 1 AU, perihelion less than 1.017 AU), and Amor asteroids (perihelion distance between 1.017 and 1.3 AU). The principal sources of earth-crossing asteroids appear to be extinct comet nuclei and collision fragments from regions in the main asteroid belt. The total population of earth-crossers is estimated at 13,000, of which approximately 8% are Atens, 50% are Apollos, and 40% are Amors, and the present collision rate of such asteroids with the earth is estimated at about 3.5 objects, to absolute magnitude 18, per million years.

Numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a family of three-dimensional corner geometries

Three-dimensional corners occur in many aerodynamic engineering situations. Supersonic flow about such geometries is characterized by strong inviscid-viscid interactions which are analyzed adequately only through the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper numerical solution for the laminar compressible Navier-Stokes equations are presented for a family of three-dimensional corners consisting of wedge-plate and wedge-cylinder intersecting boundaries. The equations of motion are transformed to a uniform rectangular computational domain. The computational technique is the MacCormack time-split algorithm vectorized and programmed to run on the CDD CYBER 203 computer. The metric data for the transformation is obtained from the 'two-boundary technique.'

Conditions for acceleration of energetic ions greater than 30 keV associated with the earth's bow shock

A statistical analysis of particles (greater than 30 keV/charge) upstream of the earth's bow shock is conducted and shows that the rate of occurrence of upstream particle events is relative to the angle between the magnetic field and the shock normal at the shock intersection point as well as relative to the angle between the magnetic field and the radial direction (i.e., the sun-earth line). In addition, the occurrence rate of upstream particle events relative to the bow shock connection time of a field line convected with the solar wind is presented for a model bow shock. A linear dependence of the diffusion coefficient on energy per charge is apparent with the value of the mean free path of a 30-keV proton found to be about 4 earth radii, and the free escape boundary to be at about 30 earth radii in front of the bow shock.

Less-Costly Inertial Guidance

Two gyroscopes mounted in gimbals yield signals that allow calculation of velocity, position and altitude of an aircraft. The mass lowers center of gravity of gimbal-and-gyro assembly to below the intersection of their axes. Combination acts as a two-axis pendulum. Rate signals from the leveling gyroscope are integrated, amplified, and fed to gimbal torquers to restore pendulum to alinement with local vertical.

High-Speed Laser Anemometer

New high-speed laser anemometer system rapidly and efficiently maps gas-flow velocities within rotating blade rows of turbomachinery. Small seed particles entrained in gas flow fluoresce when they pass through probe volume, which is the fringe pattern formed by intersecting laser beams. Transit time of particles is obtained by use of suitable optics, photomultiplier tube and electronic signal processor. Data are then sent to a minicomputer.

Numerical generation of two-dimensional grids by the use of Poisson equations with grid control at boundaries

A method for generating boundary-fitted, curvilinear, two dimensional grids by the use of the Poisson equations is presented. Grids of C-type and O-type were made about airfoils and other shapes, with circular, rectangular, cascade-type, and other outer boundary shapes. Both viscous and inviscid spacings were used. In all cases, two important types of grid control can be exercised at both inner and outer boundaries. First is arbitrary control of the distances between the boundaries and the adjacent lines of the same coordinate family, i.e., stand-off distances. Second is arbitrary control of the angles with which lines of the opposite coordinate family intersect the boundaries. Thus, both grid cell size (or aspect ratio) and grid cell skewness are controlled at boundaries. Reasonable cell size and shape are ensured even in cases wherein extreme boundary shapes would tend to cause skewness or poorly controlled grid spacing. An inherent feature of the Poisson equations is that lines in the interior of the grid smoothly connect the boundary points (the grid mapping functions are second order differentiable).

AIRCL: A programmed system for generating NC tapes for airplane models. User's manual

A computer program is presented which calculates the cutter location file needed to machine models of airplane wings or wing-fuselage combinations on numerically controlled machine tools. Input to the program is a data file consisting of coordinates on the fuselage and wing. From this data file, the program calculates tool offsets, determines the intersection between wing and fuselage tool paths, and generates additional information needed to machine the fuselage and/or wing. Output from the program can be post processed for use on a variety of milling machines. Information on program structure and methodology is given as well as the user's manual for implementation of the program.

A remote sensing evaluation of potential for sinkhole occurrence

The relationship between lowering of the water table and sinkhole development in Pierson and in Hillsborough County, Florida was investigated. The locations of recently developed (1973) collapses were examined with respect to lineaments or fracture traces that are expressed in the terrain and visible in aerial photography and satellite imagery. It was anticipated that these relationships would provide the basis for establishment of criteria for mapping those land areas that have the greatest potential for sinkhole development. A very good correlation was found between mapped lineament intersections and known location of sinkhole occurrences for both study areas. This indicates that lineament and fracture trace mapping may be very useful in locating zones with the greatest potential for sinkhole development. It is further shown that this information is quite beneficial in land use planning applications.

Method for alleviating thermal stress damage in laminates

The method is for metallic matrix composites, such as laminated sheet or foil composites. Non-intersecting discrete discontinuities are positively introduced into the interface between the layers so as to reduce the thermal stress produced by unequal expansion of the materials making up the composite. The discontinuities are preferably produced by drilling holes in the metallic matrix layer. However, a plurality of discrete elements may be used between the layers to carry out this purpose.

Energy efficient engine, high-pressure turbine cooling model technology report

Two dimensional flow visualization model tests were used to substantiate the flow stability benefits derived from the use of turning vanes in the root and tip turn flow areas. Results indicate the need for corner fillets and flow injection into the acute corner formed by the intersection of the rib and simulated airfoil suction surface in order to minimize recirculation (stagnation) of flow in that region. Three dimensional flow visualization model tests verified the actual blade coolant passage design.

Apparatus and method for determining the position of a radiant energy source

The position of a terrestrial RF source is determined from a geostationary, synchronous satellite by scanning the beam of a narrow beam width antenna in first and second orthogonal directions over a region including the source. The peak level of energy transduced by the antenna in each of the scanning directions is detected and correlated with the scanning position of the beam by feeding the output of a detector responsive to the transduced signal to an indicator of an X-Y recorder. The X and Y axes of the recorder are scanned in synchronism with the beam being respectively scanned in the first and second directions to form X and Y traces on which are indicated the detected peak position in each of the scanning directions. The source position is determined from an intersection of lines drawn parallel to the X and Y axes and including the detected peak position of each trace.

Computer program for nonlinear static stress analysis of shuttle thermal protection system: User's manual

User documentation is presented for a computer program which considers the nonlinear properties of the strain isolator pad (SIP) in the static stress analysis of the shuttle thermal protection system. This program is generalized to handle an arbitrary SIP footprint including cutouts for instrumentation and filler bar. Multiple SIP surfaces are defined to model tiles in unique locations such as leading edges, intersections, and penetrations. The nonlinearity of the SIP is characterized by experimental stress displacement data for both normal and shear behavior. Stresses in the SIP are calculated using a Newton iteration procedure to determine the six rigid body displacements of the tile which develop reaction forces in the SIP to equilibrate the externally applied loads. This user documentation gives an overview of the analysis capabilities, a detailed description of required input data and an example to illustrate use of the program.

Ice sheet altimetry

Generalized surface slopes were computed for the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets by differencing plotted contour levels and dividing them by the distance between the contours. It was observed that more than 90% of the ice sheets have surface slopes less than 1%. Seasat test mode-1 Seasat altimeter measurements over Greenland were analyzed by comparisons with collinear and intersecting normal mode Seasat altimeter passes. Over the ice sheet, the computed surface elevations from test mode-1 measurements were consistently lower by about 45 m and the AGC levels were down by approximately 6 dB. No test mode-1 data were acquired over Antarctica. It is concluded that analysis of the existing altimeter data base over the two ice sheets is crucial in designing a future improved altimeter tracking capability. It is recommended that additional waveform retracking be performed to characterize ice sheet topography as a function of geographic area and elevation.
