Mesh generation by conformal and quasiconformal mappings

It is pointed out that many recent advances in the finite-difference solution of elliptic equations have been limited to regions whose boundary contours coincide with coordinate lines of the Cartesian coordinate system. The reason for this is related to the fact that in the case of an arbitrary curvilinear coordinate system the original equation becomes much more complex. However, there is no added complexity if an orthogonal coordinate system is generated from a conformal mapping. In the present investigation, a finite difference method developed for the construction of conformal mappings has been generalized to construct quasi-conformal mappings. It is expected that the use of more sophisticated numerical algorithms could lead to improvements in both speed and accuracy. Quasi-conformal mappings have applications not only in the solution of elliptic equations but also in other areas such as orthogonal mesh generation on surfaces and the solution of certain fluid flow problems.

Intrinsic adaptive mesh techniques

An alternating direction adaptive grid movement code was developed and a thesis adaptive angular meshes was directed. The alternating direction code was also established on the NASA Langley computer system and is available for use there. In essence, grid points are moved on an abstract surface above physical space by means of alternating coordinate directions. The abstract surface is formed with the salient solution properties if they can be extracted by a priori physical reasoning; or otherwise, in the absence of such reasoning, by the use of error estimates in some chosen norm. Upon formulation, all important driving properties for adaptive purposes are consolidated into one object - the abstract surface. At a basic level, a uniform distribution of surface points is equivalent to gradient resolution. This arises from a projection back down into physical space. At a higher level, a more accurate view of the abstract surface is obtained when changes in surface direction are also resolved. The appropriate measure for direction changes is normal curvature. It is defined as the rate of change of surface tangent planes as a surface coordinate curve is transversed in uniform increments of arc length.

Operational characteristics of the dispersed sensor processor mesh

The dispersed sensor processing mesh (DSPM) is part of an experimental system used to pursue a proof of concept for an advanced fault-tolerant communication strategy. The DSPM experiments incorporate sensors and effectors into an ultra-reliable nodal network in which a central bus controller performs algorithms to grow and maintain the network. The experiments demonstrate that DSPM is an achievable communication network that can sustain failures and continue to function properly. The results of the experiment give insights into the unique characteristics of the DSPM network and the network's capacity to limit physical damage propagation, limit damaged-data propagation, and to survive cyclic communication paths. This paper describes the concept, mechanization, and performance of the DSPM system in a real-time flight-critical environment.

Cryogenic metal mesh bandpass filters for submillimeter astronomy

The design and performance of a tunable double-half-wave bandpass filter centered at 286 microns (Delta lambda/lambda = 0.16) and operating at cryogenic temperatures (for astronomy applications) are presented. The operating principle is explained, and the fabrication of the device, which comprises two identical mutually coupled Fabry-Perot filters with electroformed Ni-mesh reflectors and is tuned by means of variable spacers, is described. A drawing of the design and graphs of computed and measured performance are provided. Significantly improved bandpass characteristics are obtained relative to the single Fabry-Perot filter.

Electrostatic shielding of a charged conducting sphere by a fine-mesh grounded screen

A simple model of an electrostatic-shielding arrangement that will reduce the electric field from the Near Infrared Mapper Spectrometer aboard the Galileo spacecraft is presented. The system considered consists of a charged conducting sphere held at a fixed absolute potential via a power source. This system is screened by a larger, concentric sphere made of fine mesh which is grounded. A derivation based on elementary principles of electrostatics is used to show that the shielding effectiveness of the screen can be expressed in terms of the separation between the two spheres and another quantity B that is an intrinsic property of the screen. For a given screen, B can be determined by measuring the capacitance per unit area and separation between a flat piece of the screen and a parallel metal plate.

Into mesh lubrication of spur gears with arbitrary offset oil jet. I - For jet velocity less than or equal to gear velocity

An analysis was conducted for into mesh oil jet lubrication with an arbitrary offset and inclination angle from the pitch point for the case where the oil jet velocity is equal to or less than pitch line velocity. The analysis includes the case for the oil jet offset from the pitch point in the direction of the pinion and where the oil jet is inclined to intersect the common pitch point. Equations were developed for the minimum oil jet velocity required to impinge on the pinion or gear and the optimum oil jet velocity to obtain the maximum impingement depth.

High-Performance Heat Pipe With Screen Mesh

Liquid distributed more evenly in evaporator section. Improved heat pipe contains an artery and wick rolled from stainless-steel screen of 180 mesh (openings about 80 micrometers). Screen material helps to prevent dryout in evaporator section by conducting liquid through hotspots and to vaporchannel wall. Insert reduces incidence of dryout at hotspots or during intervals of general thermal overload.

Wrinkle-Free Hydroforming of Wire Mesh

Plastic films lubricate workpiece so it deforms smoothly. Thin layers of plastic below top die and above bottom die ensure wire screen slides as shaped by hydroforming. Plastic layers are 0.0043 in. (0.11 m) thick. Preformed to contours of dies and final workpiece. New method of hydroforming fine-wire-mesh heat-shield screens eliminates wrinkles and marks. Prevents screen from being damaged and pores from becoming blocked.

Stability of interfaces with mesh refinement

A study is conducted of the stability of mesh refinement in space and time for several different interface equations and finite-difference approximations. First, a root condition which implies stability for the initial-boundary value problem for this type of interface is derived. From the root condition, the stability of several interface equations is proved, using the maximum principle. In some cases, the final verification steps can be done analytically; in other cases, a simple computer program has been written to check the condition for values of a parameter along the boundary of the unit circle. Using this method, stability for Lax-Wendroff with all the interface conditions considered, and for Leapfrog with interpolation interface conditions when the fine and coarse grids overlap is proved.

A mesh re-zoning technique for finite element simulations of metal forming processes

Based on some fundamental properties of finite element approximations, a mesh re-zoning scheme is proposed for finite element simulations of metal forming problems. It is demonstrated that this technique is indispensable in analyzing many difficult forming processes, especially when there exist corners or very irregular shapes on the boundaries. The algorithm is tested by a backward extrusion process and direct extrusion through a square die.

Finite difference operators on unstructured triangular meshes

A new form of the Laplace operator is derived which is shown to be second-order accurate when calculated at mesh triangle nodes if the cells corresponding to the nodes have a high degree of symmetry. It is demonstrated that the Laplace operator directly derived from Stokes' integral theorem is only zeroth-order accurate on these same cells. The construction of gradient and Laplace operators on unstructured triangular grids are discussed from the variational point of view. Two discrete representations of the Laplacian are compared to each other, and conclusions are drawn regarding their accuracy on a pointwise basis. Finally, geometric relations valid on arbitrary polygons are given for completeness in an appendix.

A Lagrangian method for the shallow water equations based on a Voronoi mesh - Flows on a rotating sphere

A Lagrangian scheme using the Voronoi mesh is applied to study shallow water flow on a sphere. Discrete approximations to the shallow water equations are obtained for the surfaces of a nonrotating and a rotating sphere, and discrete differential operators are defined for the gradient and the divergence on the sphere. Dissipation is put into the model, when needed, by merging fluid points when they get too close to each other. The full numerical scheme is described and results of numerical computations on various test cases are given, including zonal flow and the Riemann problem.

Extension and applications of flux-vector splitting to unsteady calculations on dynamic meshes

The Van Leer method of flux-vector splitting for the Euler equations is extended for use on moving meshes and all the properties of the original splittings are maintained. The solution is advanced in time with an implicit, approximately factored algorithm. The use of multiple grids to reduce the computer time is investigated. A substantial reduction in computer time to resolve a pitching cycle is easily obtained with virtually no loss in accuracy. A subiterative procedure to eliminate factorization and linearization errors so that larger time steps can be used is also investigated. Subsequent computations show good agreement with experimental data for transonic and supersonic airfoils and wings undergoing forced pitching oscillation.

Accurate multigrid solution of the Euler equations on unstructured and adaptive meshes

A method for accurately solving inviscid compressible flow in the subcritical and supercritical regimes about complex configurations is presented. The method is based on the use of unstructured triangular meshes in two dimensions, and special emphasis is placed on the accuracy and efficiency of the solutions. High accuracy is achieved by careful scaling of the artificial dissipation terms, and by reformulating the inner and outer boundary conditions for both the convective and dissipative operators. An adaptive grid refinement strategy is presented which enhances the solution accuracy for complex flows. When coupled with an unstructured multigrid algorithm, this method is shown to produce an efficient solver for flows about arbitrary configurations.

Construction and evaluation of an imaging focussed-mesh electron multiplier for space instrumentation

A focused-mesh electron multiplier (FMEM) has been combined with a wedge and strip position-sensitive anode to create a novel detector that is considered likely to have a number of applications in space astronomy and laboratory image sensing. Results from the first application of a wedge and strip anode to an FMEM are presented including spatial resolution, spatial linearity, background rate, and pulse risetime. The converted multiplier retains the attributes of an FMEM that made it attractive in the first place, such as low background, high speed, and high dynamic range.
