Isopod (inverse Optimization And Design): Moose-based Application For Performing Inverse Optimization On Multiphysics Modeling And Simulation

ISOPOD (InverSe OPtimizatiOn and Design) will be a MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment)-based framework which will iteratively estimate the parameters by minimizing the difference between simulated and experimental observables. While inverse optimization has long been used for parameter estimation, the unique feature of ISOPOD is rapid solution of new inverse problems, leading to accelerated Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) for complex parameter estimation problems. This will be achieved by extending the software structure of MOOSE to inverse optimization, as well as building on the unique automatic differentiation feature of MOOSE.

PYOED: AN ETENSIBLE SUITE FOR DATA ASSIMILATION AND MODEL-CONSTRAINED OPTIMAL DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS

SF-23-005 PyOED is a highly extensible scientific package that enables developing and testing model-constrained optimal experimental design (OED) for inverse problems. Specifically, PyOED aims to be a comprehensive Python toolkit for model-constrained OED. The package targets scientists and researchers interested in understanding the details of OED formulations and approaches. It is also meant to enable researchers to experiment with standard and innovative OED technologies with a wide range of test problems (e.g., simulation models). OED, inverse problems (e.g., Bayesian inversion), and data assimilation (DA) are closely related research fields, and their formulations overlap significantly. Thus, PyOED is continuously being expanded with a plethora of Bayesian inversion, DA, and OED methods as well as new scientific simulation models, observation error models, and observation operators. These pieces are added such that they can be permuted to enable testing OED methods in various settings of varying complexities. The PyOED core is completely written in Python and utilizes the inherent object-oriented capabilities; however, PyOED is meant to be extensible rather than scalable. Specifically, PyOED is developed to ``enable rapid development and benchmarking of OED methods with minimal coding effort and to maximize code reutilization.'' PyOED will be continuously expanded with a plethora of Bayesian inversion, DA, and OED methods as well as new scientific simulation models, observation error models, and observation operators.

radkit base v1.6

The radkit (base) software suite (python) consists of three primary libraries: stark, trajan, and curie. The trajan library provides the tools to analyze and manipulate data from lidar and inertial measurement unit (IMU) devices, cameras, as well as trajectories from algorithms such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). These components allow reading and writing standard data formats, performing rigid affine transformations, discretizing three-dimensional space, and visualizing data products. The curie library comprises a standard set of object-oriented tools for radiation data and analysis in the following modules: (1) listmode and binmode data classes with methods for manipulation, plotting, slicing and file IO; (2) radiological/nuclear source detection/identification analysis results; (3) source encounters of correlated analyses and (4) energy-dependent angular detector response functions. The stark package provides low-level tools that are leveraged by both curie and trajan. The tools are flexible for offline analysis as well as performant for real-time integrations.

HI-STORM Overpack and MPC-32 Thermal-Hydraulic Model with MOOSE Framework

Nuclear power is a significant source of electricity in the United States, but the average age of nuclear power plants is around 40 years old. The safe management of the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is a key aspect of the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle. Spent fuel dry storage systems are becoming a popular and effective solution in this area, given the absence of a final disposal system. The spent fuel cask system (dry cask method) provides a feasible solution to maintain spent fuel for 60 years before final disposal. Dry cask storage has many characteristics that make it attractive. It fulfills the safety requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) while providing modularity and flexibility to contractors. The HI-STORM overpack and MPC-32 canister are the main parts of the HI-STORM 100 dry cask storage system. These components remove heat from the system using natural circulation, requiring no human intervention. This is the characteristic that provides passive heat removal and low maintenance features in dry cask storage systems. To develop a thermal model for a dry cask storage system, the physics behind the system should be defined clearly. There are two natural circulation loops in the system; circulation of helium cools down the nuclear assemblies in the MPC, while circulation of air cools down the walls of the MPC. This work aims to develop a thermal model of the MPC-32 canister and HI-STORM overpack using the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). MOOSE is an open-source framework developed by Idaho National Laboratory (INL) for multiscale, multiphysics simulations. In this study, we will investigate and demonstrate the thermal-hydraulics modeling capabilities of the MOOSE framework, including natural circulation, heat transfer, and porous flow.

Kinetic Plasma Simulation in the MOOSE Framework: Verification of Electrostatic Particle In Cell Capabilities

In magnetic confinement nuclear fusion reactors, the interaction between the plasma edge and plasma facing components is extremely important. At the plasma edge, a kinetic representation such as particle-in-cell (rather than a fluid representation) is required to accurately capture the plasma behavior. General purpose particle-in-cell plasma simulation capabilities have been developed in the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework. This new capability is a part of the development of a new MOOSE-based framework for modeling plasma facing components, the Fusion ENergy Integrated multiphys-X (FENIX) framework. In this work, the verification of foundational particle-in-cell capabilities in FENIX is presented. This new plasma simulation capability has three main components: moving particles in discrete steps on the finite element mesh, mapping charge density from the particle's location to the finite element mesh, and solving for the electrostatic potential based on the charge density mapped from particles to the mesh. In this paper, simple verification problems demonstrating each of these new capabilities are presented, and future work includes electromagnetic capabilities and Monte Carlo collisions with neutral gas particles.

Initial Demonstration of New Griffin Capability for Simulating the Running-In Phase of Pebble-Bed Reactors with Multiphysics

Griffin, a MOOSE (Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment) based application targeting transient modelling of advanced reactors, has been used recently to model pebble-bed reactors (PBRs). The modelling effort has focused thus far on modelling the equilibrium core. A new capability to simulate the running-in phase of PBR operation has been added to Griffin. This work demonstrates the newcapability with a sample multiphysics running-in simulation. The basic features of the new running-in capability were documented previously; however, the sample simulation results presented there did not include multiphysics; the fuel temperatures were assumed to be constant. In this work, Griffin computes power densities in the core at each timestep of the running-in simulation and passes these to Pronghorn which models fluid flow and heat transfer to calculate temperatures that are passed back to Griffin and accounted for with temperature dependent cross-sections.
