Stringy Bubbles Solve de Sitter Troubles

Finding four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime solutions in string theory has been a vexing quest ever since the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe. Building on a recent analysis of bubble-nucleation in the decay of (false-vacuum) AdS backgrounds where the interfacing bubbles themselves exhibit a de Sitter geometry we show that this resonates strongly with a stringy cosmic brane construction that naturally provides for an exponential mass-hierarchy and the localization of both gravity and matter, in addition to an exponentially suppressed positive cosmological constant. Finally, we argue that these scenarios can be realized in terms of a generalization of a small resolution of a conifold singularity in the context of a (Lorentzian) Calabi–Yau 5-fold, where the isolated (Lorentzian) two complex dimensional Fano variety is a four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime.

Partial wave analyses of ψ ( 3686 ) → p p ¯ π 0 and ψ ( 3686 ) → p p ¯ η

Using a sample of ( 2712 ± 14 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform partial wave analyses of the decays ψ ( 3686 ) → p p ¯ π 0 and ψ ( 3686 ) → p p ¯ η . The branching fractions of ψ ( 3686 ) → p p ¯ π 0 and ψ ( 3686 ) → p p ¯ η are determined to be ( 133.9 ± 11.2 ± 2.3 ) × 10 − 6 or ( 183.7 ± 13.7 ± 3.2 ) × 10 − 6 and ( 61.5 ± 6.5 ± 1.1 ) × 10 − 6 or ( 84.4 ± 6.9 ± 1.4 ) × 10 − 6 , respectively, where the two solutions are caused by an ambiguous phase angle between resonant and continuum processes. Several well-established N * states are observed in the p π 0 and p η systems, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of decay widths Γ N ( 1535 ) → N η / Γ N ( 1535 ) → N π is determined to be 0.99 ± 0.05 ± 0.19 . Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Amplitude analysis of the $D^+$ → $π^-π^+π^+$ decay and measurement of the $π^-π^+$ S-wave amplitude

An amplitude analysis of the $D^+$ → $π^-π^+π^+$ decay is performed with a sample corresponding to 1.5 fb -1 of integrated luminosity of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected by the LHCb detector in 2012. The sample contains approximately six hundred thousand candidates with a signal purity of 95%. The resonant structure is studied through a fit to the Dalitz plot where the $π^-π^+$ S-wave amplitude is extracted as a function of $π^-π^+$ mass, and spin-1 and spin-2 resonances are included coherently through an isobar model. The S-wave component is found to be dominant, followed by the $ρ(770)^0π^+$ and $f_2(1270)π^+$ components. A small contribution from the $ω$(782) → $π^-π^+$ decay is seen for the first time in the $D^+$ → $π^-π^+π^+$ decay.

Search for Rare b → d ℓ + ℓ − Transitions at Belle

We present the results of a search for the b → d ℓ + ℓ − flavor-changing neutral-current rare decays B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π + , 0 , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( η , ω , π 0 , ρ + ) μ + μ − using a 711 fb − 1 data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 B B ¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We find no evidence for signal and set upper limits on branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the range ( 3.8 – 47 ) × 10 − 8 depending on the decay channel. The obtained limits are the world’s best results. This is the first search for the channels B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + , 0 ) e + e − and B + , 0 → ( ω , ρ + ) μ + μ − . Photoproduction of the f 2 ( 1270 ) Meson Using the CLAS Detector

The quark structure of the f 2 ( 1270 ) meson has, for many years, been assumed to be a pure quark-antiquark (q$\bar{q}$) resonance with quantum numbers J PC = 2 ++ . Recently, it was proposed that the f 2 ( 1270 ) is a molecular state made from the attractive interaction of two ρ mesons. Such a state would be expected to decay strongly to final states with charged pions due to the dominant decay ρ → π + π - , whereas decay to two neutral pions would likely be suppressed. Here, we measure for the first time the reaction γp → π 0 π 0 p , using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector at Jefferson Lab for incident beam energies between 3.6 and 5.4 GeV. Differential cross sections, dσ/dt , for f 2 ( 1270 ) photoproduction are extracted with good precision due to low backgrounds and are compared to theoretical calculations.

Determination of the lifetime of the Mercury 6/3/P-1 state

A pulsed tunable dye laser was used for a high resolution experimental study of mercury fluorescence from the 6(3)P-1 state. The output of the dye laser was frequency doubled into the 253.7 nm region using a potassium pentaborate crystal. Exponential decays were separately observed for each of the five individual components of the hyperfine structure and the effects of the trapping of resonance radiation on the observed lifetime of the 6(3)P-1 state of mercury were investigated for each resolvable component. Within experimental error, the natural radiative lifetime of the 6(3)P-1 state was found to be independent of the hyperfine component irradiated and a value of 122 + or 2 nsec was obtained, consistent with results found by other methods.

The decay of highly excited open strings

The decay rates of leading edge Regge trajectory states are calculated for very high level number in open bosonic string theories, ignoring tachyon final states. The optical theorem simplifies the analysis while enabling identification of the different mass level decay channels. The main result is that (in four dimensions) the greatest single channel is the emission of a single photon and a state of the next mass level down. A simple asymptotic formula for arbitrarily high level number is given for this process. Also calculated is the total decay rate exactly up to N=100. It shows little variation over this range but appears to decrease for larger N. The formalism is checked in examples and the decay rate of the first excited level calculated for open superstring theories. The calculation may also have implications for high spin meson resonances.

Spatiotemporal behavior and nonlinear dynamics in a phase conjugate resonator

The work described can be divided into two parts. The first part is an investigation of the transient behavior and stability property of a phase conjugate resonator (PCR) below threshold. The second part is an experimental and theoretical study of the PCR's spatiotemporal dynamics above threshold. The time-dependent coupled wave equations for four-wave mixing (FWM) in a photorefractive crystal, with two distinct interaction regions caused by feedback from an ordinary mirror, was used to model the transient dynamics of a PCR below threshold. The conditions for self-oscillation were determined and the solutions were used to define the PCR's transfer function and analyze its stability. Experimental results for the buildup and decay times confirmed qualitatively the predicted behavior. Experiments were carried out above threshold to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of the PCR as a function of Pragg detuning and the resonator's Fresnel number. The existence of optical vortices in the wavefront were identified by optical interferometry. It was possible to describe the transverse dynamics and the spatiotemporal instabilities by modeling the three-dimensional-coupled wave equations in photorefractive FWM using a truncated modal expansion approach.

Study of the lineshape of X ( 3872 ) using B decays to D 0 D ¯ * 0 K

We present a study of the X⁡(3872) lineshape in the decay B →X(3872)⁢K →D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 ⁢K using a data sample of 772 ×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the Y⁡(4⁢S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e +⁢ e - collider. The peak near the threshold in the D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be m BW =3873.7⁢1$^{+0.56}_{-0.50⁢}$(stat) ±0.13⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 and Γ BW =5.2$^{+2.2}_{-1.5}$⁢(stat) ±0.4⁢(syst) MeV, respectively. The branching fraction is found to be $\mathscr{B}$⁡(B + → X⁡(3872)⁢K + ) × $\mathscr{B}$⁡(X⁡(3872) → D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 ) = (0.9⁢7$^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$⁢(stat) ± 0.10⁢(syst)) ×10 -4 . The signal from B 0 decays is observed for the first time with 5.2σ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral B decays is measured to be $\mathscr{B}$(B 0 → X⁡(3872)⁢K 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$⁡(B + →X⁡(3872)⁢K + ) =1.34$^{+0.47}_{-0.40}$⁢(stat) $^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$⁢(syst). Amplitude Analysis of $\omega\pi^0$ Photoproduction at GlueX

Excited meson states can often lie hidden within mass spectra beneath more dominant resonances, making it difficult to extract their physical properties. We can unveil these states through amplitude analysis, which disentangles the overlapping states via fits to their unique production and decay angular distributions. Understanding the light-meson spectrum is essential for confirming Lattice QCD predictions, especially in regards to the search for possible hybrid mesons. The Gluonic Excitation (GlueX) experiment at Jefferson Lab aids this search by studying the production of excited light mesons in $\gamma p$ interactions in the 8.2 - 8.8 GeV photon-beam energy range. We show in these proceedings preliminary results of an amplitude analysis of a large $\omega\pi^0$ dataset, concentrating on measuring the interference between the $b_1(1235)$ and an excited $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ vector resonance.

Search for an axion-like particle with forward proton scattering in association with photon pairs at ATLAS

A search for forward proton scattering in association with light-by-light scattering mediated by an axion-like particle is presented, using the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer to detect scattered protons and the central ATLAS detector to detect pairs of outgoing photons. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV were analysed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb –1 . A total of 441 candidate events were selected. A search was made for a narrow resonance in the diphoton mass distribution, corresponding to an axion-like particle (ALP) with mass in the range 150–1600 GeV. No excess is observed above a smooth background. Upper limits on the production cross section of a narrow resonance are set as a function of the mass, and are interpreted as upper limits on the ALP production coupling constant, assuming 100% decay branching ratio into a photon pair. The inferred upper limit on the coupling constant is in the range 0.04–0.09 TeV –1 at 95% confidence level.

Probing lepton flavor violation at Circular Electron-Positron Colliders

Lepton flavor violation is one of the cleanest probes of physics beyond the standard model. In this work, we explore the sensitivity of the process e + e – → τμ to new physics above the TeV scale at the proposed circular electron-positron colliders FCC-ee and CEPC. We compute the e + e – → τμ cross-section in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and assess the relevant backgrounds. We compare our sensitivity projections to existing and expected constraints from tau decays and Z decays and find that the future electron-positron colliders provide competitive probes of new physics. We highlight the complementarity of searches for resonant e + e – → Z → τμ production on the Z pole and searches for non-resonant e + e – → τμ at higher center-of-mass energies.

Electron-radiation effects on the ac and dc electrical properties and unpaired electron densities of three aerospace polymers

The effects of gigarad-level total absorbed doses from 1-MeV electrons on the post-irradiation alternating-current (ac) and direct-current (dc) electrical properties and the unpaired electron densities have been studied for Kapton, Ultem, and Mylar. The unpaired electron densities (determined from electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy) and the dc electrical conductivities of the irradiated materials were monitored as functions of time following the exposures to determine their decay characteristics at room temperature. The elevated-temperature ac electrical dissipations of the Ultem and Mylar were affected by the radiation. The dc conductivity of the Kapton increased by five orders of magnitude, while the dc conductivities of the Ultem and Mylar increased by less than an order of magnitude, due to the radiation. The observed radiation-generated changes in the ac electrical dissipations are explained in terms of known radiation-generated changes in the molecular structures of the three materials. A preliminary model relating the dc electrical conductivity and the unpaired electron density in the Kapton is proposed.

The 1991 November 9 flare at 03.2 UT: Observations from Yohkoh

We discuss X-ray spectra and soft X-ray images of an M1.9 flare that occurred on 1991 November 9 near 03.2 UT. These data were obtained with instrumentation on the Japanese Yohkoh spacecraft. They cover the entire rise phase and peak flare emission, and the beginning of the decay phase. We determine the dynamics, temperature, and emission measure of the flare as inferred from the X-ray line profiles of resonance lines of Fe XXV, Ca XIX, and S XV. We discuss the morphology of the flare as inferred from the soft X-ray images. The November 9 flare is atypical in that a stronger than usual blueshifted emission component (relative to the stationary component) is observed for the resonance lines at flare onset. We discuss several methods for deconvolving the blueshifted component from the stationary component. The X-ray line profiles are consistent with predictions of numerical simulations of chromospheric evaporation. The X-ray images reveal a flare with a complicated loop geometry that is not fully understood. Many of the features in the images are moving upwards at speeds ranging from a few km/s to about 800 km/s. The blueshifted emission begins near the onset of hard X-ray emission, implying that particle acceleration and upflowing plasma have a common energy source.

PAIReD jet: A multi-pronged resonance tagging strategy across all Lorentz boosts

We propose a new approach of jet-based event reconstruction that aims to optimally exploit correlations between the products of a hadronic multi-pronged decay across all Lorentz boost regimes. The new approach utilizes clustered small-radius jets as seeds to define unconventional jets, referred to as PAIReD jets. The constituents of these jets are subsequently used as inputs to machine learning-based algorithms to identify the flavor content of the jet. We demonstrate that this approach achieves higher efficiencies in the reconstruction of signal events containing heavy-flavor jets compared to other event reconstruction strategies at all Lorentz boost regimes. Classifiers trained on PAIReD jets also have significantly better background rejections compared to those based on traditional event reconstruction approaches using small-radius jets at low Lorentz boost regimes. The combined effect of a higher signal reconstruction efficiency and better classification performance results in a two to four times stronger rejection of light-flavor jets compared to conventional strategies at low Lorentz-boosts, and rejection rates similar to classifiers based on large-radius multi-pronged jets at high Lorentz-boost regimes.

Resonant double-core excitations with ultrafast, intense X-ray pulses

Intense few-to-sub-femtosecond soft X-ray pulses can produce neutral, two-site excited double-core-hole states by promoting two core electrons to the same unoccupied molecular orbital. We theoretically investigate double nitrogen K-edge excitations of nitrous oxide (N$_2$O) with multiconfigurational electronic structure calculations. We show that the second core-excitation energy is reduced with respect to its ground state value. A site-selective double core-excitation mechanism using intense few-femtosecond x-rays is investigated using time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) simulations. The subsequent two-step Auger-Meitner and two-electrons-one-electron decay spectra of the double core-excited states are analysed using a Mulliken population analysis of the multiconfirational wavefunctions. The change in the electron emission lineshape between the absorption of 1 or 2 photons in the resonant core-excitation is predicted by combining this approach with the TDSE simulations. Furthermore, we examine the possibility of resolving the double core-excited states with X-ray pump-probe techniques by calculating the chemical shifts of the core-electron binding energy of the core-excited states and decay products.
