Crystal structures and comparisons of huntite aluminum borates RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 ( RE = Tb, Dy and Ho)

Three huntite-type aluminoborates of stoichiometry RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 ( RE = Tb, Dy and Ho), namely, terbium/dysprosium/holmium trialuminium tetrakis(borate), were synthesized by slow cooling within a K 2 Mo 3 O 10 flux with spontaneous crystallization. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data. The synthesized borates are isostructural to the huntite [CaMg 3 (CO 3 ) 4 ] structure and crystallized within the trigonal R 32 space group. The structural parameters were compared to literature data of other huntite RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 crystals within the R 32 space group. All three borates fit well into the trends calculated from the literature data. The unit-cell parameters and volumes increase linearly with larger RE cations whereas the densities decrease. All of the crystals studied were refined as inversion twins.

The Zintl pnictides Yb10CdSb9 and Yb14CdSb11: New candidate thermoelectric materials

The synthesis of new materials is the lifeline of solid-state science, and it continues to offer us unique opportunities for testing various theoretical formulations and models on a practical material. Such an avenue, therefore, provides a breeding ground for technological innovations and advancements that can completely revolutionize our world. Here, we report the results of our exploratory syntheses in the Yb–Cd–Sb compositional space that lead to the identification of two new Zintl antimonides, namely, Yb10CdSb9 and Yb14CdSb11. Their crystal structures were established via single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods; the basic electronic and transport properties of the new materials were also characterized. Yb10CdSb9 crystallizes in a disordered variant of the tetragonal Ca10LiMgSb9 structure type with unit cell parameters a = 11.8473(8) Å and c = 17.1302(12) Å (space group P42/mnm). Yb14CdSb11 crystallizes in the tetragonal Ca14AlSb11 structure type with unit cell parameters: a = 16.605(3) Å and c = 12.144(7) Å (space group I41/acd). Although the structures of both compounds can be rationalized within the framework of the Zintl formalism, based on the partitioning of the valence electrons in the much disordered Yb10CdSb9 phase, the charge is indicative of a slightly electron-rich composition. Electronic structure calculations in both cases support the notion of intrinsic semiconductor behavior, as expected for a Zintl phase. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of a single crystal of Yb10CdSb9 is in line with that, and the evolution of the Seebeck coefficient indicates an electron-dominated transport mechanism, and a respectable power factor of 0.71 μW/cm K2 at 460 K can be calculated for Yb10CdSb9. The electrical resistivity of Yb14CdSb11, however, evolves in a semimetallic manner, which could suggest an overdoped sample or degenerate semiconducting behavior.

A new layered kagome strip structure Na 2 Co 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 : static and dynamic magnetic properties

One-dimensional kagome strip chains share much of the same frustrated structural motif as two-dimensional kagome antiferromagnets, making them valuable for deepening our understanding of kagome lattice magnetism. In this paper, we report the hydrothermal synthesis and detailed structural and property characterization of Na 2 Co 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 , a striped kagome system. The crystal structure was characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction which reveals that Na 2 Co 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 crystallizes in monoclinic crystal system C2/m. The structure features a one-dimensional kagome strip lattice built from Co 2+ ions and undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at T N = 14 K. The magnetic ground state at zero field was characterized using neutron powder diffraction. Below the magnetic transition, Na 2 Co 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 orders into an antiferromagnetic structure with a k-vector (0.5, 0.5, 0.5). In the proposed model, the Co1 moment is predominantly confined to the ac-plane while the Co2 moment is primarily aligned along the b-axis. Two flat bands were observed in the inelastic neutron spectra below the magnetic transition, 5 and 10 meV. Inelastic neutron spectra were modeled with a Heisenberg Hamiltonian including three nearest-neighbor exchange interactions (J 1 , J 2 , J 3 ) and strong single-ion anisotropy to stabilize the observed magnetic structure. Our study highlights the complexity of Co 2+ -based kagome strip magnetic lattice compound Na 2 Co 3 (AsO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 which provides an excellent platform to broaden our understanding of the frustrated kagome magnetic lattice space.

Structure and Bonding of 1,2,4-Triazole Thiones Derived from Nitron

The molecular structures of two 1,2,4-triazole thiones derived from Nitron, namely Nitron(S) and Nitron(S) Me , have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Comparison with the structure of Nitron indicates that the formation of the thiones is accompanied by a shortening of the C–N bond within the 5-membered ring that is opposite to the thione group, and a lengthening of the exocyclic C–N bond. Analysis of the structures of Nitron, Nitron(S) and Nitron(S) Me , together with hypothetical versions in which the phenyl substituents are replaced by hydrogen, indicates that these changes are in accord with bond order differences predicted by natural bond orbital methods. Here, a similar evaluation of the thione groups of Nitron(S) and Nitron(S)Me indicates that the C–S bonds are composed of both covalent and ionic components and are best described by a combination of resonance structures that feature C=S double and C–S single bonds.

From the Ternary Phase Ca 14 Zn 1+δ Sb 11 (δ ≈ 0.4) to the Quaternary Solid Solutions Ca 14– x RE x ZnSb 11 (RE = La–Nd, Sm, Gd, x ≈ 0.9). A Tale of Electron Doping via Rare-Earth Metal Substitutions and the Concomitant Structural Transformations

In this work, the ternary compound Ca 14 Zn 1.37(1) Sb 11 and its six rare-earth metal substituted derivatives Ca 14–x RE x ZnSb 11 (RE = La–Nd, Sm, Gd; x ≈ 0.90±0.06) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. All com-pounds formally crystallize in the tetragonal Ca 14 AlSb 11 structure type (space group $I$4 1 $/ acd$, No. 142, $Z$ = 8). The crystal structure of Ca 14 Zn 1.37(1) Sb 11 subtly differs from the structure of the remaining six, as well as from the structure of the archetype, due to the presence of a partially occupied interstitial Zn position. The extra zinc atom is needed in this structure to alleviate the unfavorable number of valence electrons in the imaginary Ca 14 ZnSb 11 . Electron doping, via substitution of RE 3+ ions on Ca 2+ sites is shown as an alternative route to achieve electron balance in these Zn-based analogs of the Ca 14 AlSb 11 structure, which does not require the in-corporation of interstitial atoms. Electrical resistivity measurements done on single-crystalline samples are in agreement with the notion that Ca 14–x RE x ZnSb 11 behave as either bad metals or heavily-doped semi-conductors. Magnetization measurements show Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior related to the local-moment magnetism of the RE 3+ ions.

Tensile Deformation of DED Graded IN718-René41 Superalloy at 650°C by in-situ Neutron Diffraction and Digital Image Correlation

A compositionally graded material comprised IN718 (718, γ'/γ" strengthened superalloy) and René41 (R41, a medium γ' strengthened superalloy) was fabricated using laser blown-powder directed energy deposition (DED/LB-M). Hot gas path components that require high and low temperature capabilities at different locations may benefit from such graded superalloy, potentially eliminating the use of welded or mechanically joined components and reducing cost. In the present work, microstructure and 650°C tensile behavior of 718-R41 graded superalloy in as-built and heat-treated states are investigated by Digital Image Correlation (DIC), in-situ neutron diffraction, coupled with conventional characterization techniques. The applied heat treatment generates static recrystallization and equiaxed grains in 718 rich compositions, while R41 rich compositions remain partially or un-recrystallized. Yield strengths of 718 and R41 sections in heat-treated state are comparable to wrought forms but the graded compositions show weakness. From neutron experiment, diffraction elastic constants and single crystal elastic constants are calculated, which show small difference between the as-built and heat-treated states and between the γ and γ' phases. Grain-level load transfer from the (220) grains to (200) grains is found to be composition dependent, and qualitatively agrees with DIC measured macroscopic yield strength. Within the (200) grains, the γ/γ' phases deform elastically until the γ phase yields and afterwards the γ' phase takes load from γ phase.

Crystal structures and comparisons of potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu)

Six potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu) were synthesized by flux-assisted growth in K 2 Mo 3 O 10 . The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The synthesized molybdates crystallize with the orthorhombic Pbcn space group (No. 60). Trendlines for unit-cell parameters were calculated using data from the current study. The unit-cell parameters a and c increase linearly whereas b decreases with larger RE cations, based on crystal radii. The unit-cell volumes increase linearly and the densities decrease linearly with larger RE cations. The average distances between the RE cations and the nearest O atoms increase with larger cations whereas the average distances of Mo—O and K—O do not show specific trends.

Crystal Growth of Quaternary RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) Using Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method: Investigation of Magnetic and Luminescence Properties

A series of quaternary rare-earth containing thiosilicates with the general formula RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 (RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) has been synthesized via the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) crystal growth method. High-quality single crystals were obtained, and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 series crystallizes in the trigonal system, adopting the space group R-3c. Polycrystalline samples were employed for physical property measurements, including magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV–visible diffuse reflectance, and photoluminescent response. Magnetic data of RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce, Nd, and Gd) were collected over the 2–300 K temperature range. The samples were paramagnetic behavior with negative Weiss constants (θ W = −11.05, −10.55, and −1.35 K respectively). Their thermal stability was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optical band gaps, estimated from diffuse reflectance spectra, were determined to be 2.2(1) eV for Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , 1.8(1) eV for Nd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , and 1.7(1) eV for Gd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 respectively. Finally, photoluminescence measurements were collected on Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 and Tb 2 EuSi 2 S 8 single crystals.

New ternary tantalum borides containing boron dumbbells: Experimental and theoretical studies of Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB

The new ternary transition metal-rich borides Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB have been successfully synthesized by arc-melting the elements in a water-cooled crucible under an argon atmosphere. The crystal structures of both compounds were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and their metal compositions were confirmed by EDX analysis. It was found that Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB crystallize in the tetragonal Nb{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} (space group P4/mnc, no. 128) and the orthorhombic NbRuB (space group Pmma, no. 51) structure types with lattice parameters a=5.878(2) Å, c=6.857(2) Å and a=10.806(2) Å, b=3.196(1) Å, c=6.312(2) Å, respectively. Furthermore, crystallographic, electronic and bonding characteristics have been studied by density functional theory (DFT). Electronic structure relaxation has confirmed the crystallographic parameters while COHP bonding analysis indicates that B{sub 2}-dummbells are the strongest bonds in both compounds. Moreover, the formation of osmium dumbbells in Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} through a Peierls distortion along the c-axis, is found to be the origin of superstructure formation. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that the two phases are Pauli paramagnets, thus confirming the theoretical DOS prediction of metallic character. Also hints of superconductivity are found in the two phases, however lack of single phase samples has prevented confirmation. Furthermore, the thermodynamic stability of the two modifications of AMB (A=Nb, Ta; M =Ru, Os) are studied using DFT, as new possible phases containing either B{sub 4}- or B{sub 2}-units are predicted, the former being the most thermodynamically stable modification. - Graphical abstract: The two new ternary tantalum borides, Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB, have been discovered. Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB are Pauli paramagnet and potential superconductors. - Highlights: • Two new ternary tantalum borides, Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB, discovered. • Boron dumbbells are the strongest bonds in Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB. • Peierls distortion responsible for Os{sub 2}-dumbbells formation in Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2.} • Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB are Pauli paramagnet. • Ta{sub 2}OsB{sub 2} and TaRuB contain pseudogaps and are potential superconductors.

Closely packed, low reorganization energy $π$-extended postfullerene acceptors for efficient polymer solar cells

New organic semiconductors are essential for developing inexpensive, high-efficiency, solution-processable polymer solar cells (PSCs). PSC photoactive layers are typically fabricated by film-casting a donor polymer and a fullerene acceptor blend, with ensuing solvent evaporation and phase separation creating discrete conduits for photogenerated holes and electrons. Until recently, n-type fullerene acceptors dominated the PSC literature; however, indacenodithienothiophene (IDTT)-based acceptors have recently enabled remarkable PSC performance metrics, for reasons that are not entirely obvious. Herein we report two isomeric IDTT-based acceptors 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-benz-(5, 6)indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-nonylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]di-thiophene (ITN-C9) and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-benz(6,7)indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-nonylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2′,3′-d′]-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene (ITzN-C9) that shed light on the exceptional IDTT properties vis-à-vis fullerenes. The neat acceptors and blends with fluoropolymer donor poly{[4,8-bis[5-(2- ethylhexyl)-4-fluoro-2-thienyl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5- b′ ]dithiophene2,6-diyl]- alt -[2,5-thiophenediyl[5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4,8-dioxo4H,8H-benzo[1,2- c :4,5- c′ ]dithiophene-1,3-diyl]]} (PBDB-TF) are investigated by optical spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, photovoltaic response, space-charge-limited current transport, atomic force microscopy, grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and density functional theory-level quantum chemical analysis. The data reveal that ITN-C9 and ITzN-C9 organize such that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital-rich end groups have intermolecular π−π distances as close as 3.31(1) Å, with electronic coupling integrals as large as 38 meV, and internal reorganization energies as small as 0.133 eV, comparable to or superior to those in fullerenes. ITN-C9 and ITzN-C9 have broad solar-relevant optical absorption, and, when blended with PBDB-TF, afford devices with power conversion efficiencies near 10%. Performance differences between ITN-C9 and ITzN-C9 are understandable in terms of molecular and electronic structure distinctions via the influences on molecular packing and orientation with respect to the electrode.

Second Coordination Sphere Effects in an Evolved Ru Complex Based on Highly Adaptable Ligand Results in Rapid Water Oxidation Catalysis

A new Ru complex containing the deprotonated 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine-6,6"-diphosphonic acid (H 4 tPa) and pyridine (py) of general formula [Ru II (H 3 tPa-κ-N 3 O)(py) 2 ] + , 2 + , has been prepared and thoroughly characterized by means of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, X-ray diffraction analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Complex 2 + presents a dynamic behavior in the solution that involves the synchronous coordination and the decoordination of the dangling phosphonic groups of the tPa 4– ligand. Yet, at oxidation state IV, complex 2 + becomes seven coordinated with the two phosphonic groups now bonded to the metal center. Further, at this oxidation state at neutral and basic pH, the Ru complex undergoes the coordination of an exogenous OH – group from the solvent that leads to an intramolecular aromatic O atom insertion into the CH bond of one of the pyridyl groups, forming the corresponding phenoxo-phosphonate Ru complex [Ru III (tPaO-κ-N 2 O P O C )(py) 2 ] 2– , 4 2– , where tPaO 5– is the 3-(hydroxo-[2,2':6',2"-terpyridine]-6,6"-diyl)bis(phosphonate) ligand. This new in situ generated Ru complex, 4 2– , has been isolated and spectroscopically and electrochemically characterized. In addition, a crystal structure has been also obtained using single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 4 2– turns out to be an exceptional water oxidation catalyst achieving record maximum turnover frequencies (TOF max ) on the order of 16 000 s –1 . A mechanistic analysis complemented with DFT calculations has further been carried out, showing the critical role of intramolecular second coordination sphere effects exerted by the phosphonate groups in lowering the activation energy at the rate-determining step.

Real-Time Observation of Order-Disorder Transformation of Organic Cations Induced Phase Transition and Anomalous Photoluminescence in Hybrid Perovskites

A fundamental understanding of the interplay between the microscopic structure and macroscopic optoelectronic properties of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials is essential to design new materials and improve device performance. However, how exactly the organic cations affect the structural phase transition and optoelectronic properties of the materials is not well understood. Here, real-time, in situ temperature-dependent neutron/X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal a transformation of the organic cation CH 3 NH 3 + from order to disorder with increasing temperature in CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 perovskites. The molecular-level order-to-disorder transformation of CH 3 NH 3 + not only leads to an anomalous increase in PL intensity, but also results in a multidomain to single-domain structural transition. Lastly, this discovery establishes the important role that organic cation ordering has in dictating structural order and anomalous optoelectronic phenomenon in hybrid perovskites.

Effects of Catalyst Phase on the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction of Water Splitting: Preparation of Phase-Pure Films of FeP, Fe 2 P, and Fe 3 P and Their Relative Catalytic Activities

The comparative catalytic activities of iron phosphides, Fe x P (x = 1–3), have been established with phase-pure material grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from single-source organometallic precursors. This is the first report of the preparation of phase-pure thin films of FeP and Fe 2 P, and their identity was established with scanning-electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. All materials were deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) for evaluation of their activities toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of water splitting in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . HER activity follows the trend Fe 3 P > Fe 2 P > FeP, with Fe 3 P having the lowest overpotential of 49 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm –2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are congruent with the observed activity trend with hydrogen binding favoring the iron-rich terminating surfaces of Fe 3 P and Fe 2 P over the iron-poor terminating surfaces of FeP. The results present a clear trend of activity with iron-rich phosphide phases outperforming phosphorus rich phases for hydrogen evolution. The films of Fe 2 P were grown using Fe(CO) 4 PH 3 (1), while the films of FeP were prepared using either Fe(CO) 4 P t BuH 2 (2) or the new molecule {Fe(CO)4P(H)tBu}2 (3) on quartz and FTO. Compound 3 was prepared from the reaction of PCl 2 t Bu with a mixture of Na[HFe(CO) 4 ] and Na 2 [Fe(CO) 4 ] and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI-MS, elemental analysis, and 31 P/ 1 H NMR spectroscopies. Films of Fe 3 P were prepared as previously described from H 2 Fe 3 (CO) 9 P t Bu (4).

Short-Range Order in α-FeAl Soft Magnetic Alloy

The atomic structure of iron–aluminum alloy samples containing about 7 at % of aluminum (α region of the phase diagram) was investigated by X-ray diffraction. The samples were annealed in the paramagnetic (T > {sup T}{sub C}) and ferromagnetic (T < T{sub C}) states. In the first case, the structural state was fixed by quenching from the annealing temperature in water, and, in the second case, by slow cooling. Diffraction patterns of single-crystal samples were taken on an X-ray four-circle diffractometer. It is shown that local ordering, regardless of the prehistory of a sample, is a combination of B2-phase clusters (the CsCl type structure), which were previously found in iron–silicon alloys with Si content up to 10%, and small regions with D0{sub 3} short-range order. The former consist of two B2-cells having a common face, while the latter consist predominantly of one unit cell of the D0{sub 3}-phase. Within the accuracy of the experiment, no significant difference in the structural states in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases was observed.

Building Blocks for High-Efficiency Organic Photovoltaics: Interplay of Molecular, Crystal, and Electronic Properties in Post-Fullerene ITIC Ensembles

Accurate single-crystal X-ray diffraction data offer a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the atomistic details of bulk heterojunction photovoltaic small-molecule acceptor structure and packing, as well as provide an essential starting point for computational electronic structure and charge transport analysis. Herein, we report diffraction-derived crystal structures and computational analyses on the n-type semiconductors which enable some of the highest efficiency organic solar cells produced to date, 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC) and seven derivatives (including three new crystal structures: 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-propylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC-C3), 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(3-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (m-ITIC-C6), and 3,9-bis(2-methylene-((3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-6,7-difluoro)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-butylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC-C4-4F). IDTT acceptors typically pack in a face-to-face fashion with π–π distances ranging from 3.28–3.95 Å. Additionally, edge-to-face packing is observed with S...π interactions as short as 3.21–3.24 Å. Moreover, ITIC end group identities and side chain substituents influence the nature and strength of noncovalent interactions (e.g. H-bonding, π–π) and thus correlate with the observed packing motif, electronic structure, and charge transport properties of the crystals. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal relatively large nearest-neighbor intermolecular π-π electronic couplings (5.85–56.8 meV) and correlate the nature of the band structure with the dispersion interactions in the single crystals and core–end group polarization effects. Overall, this combined experimental and theoretical work reveals key insights into crystal engineering strategies for indacenodithienothiophene (IDTT) acceptors, as well as general design rules for high-efficiency post-fullerene small molecule acceptors.
