Facilitated Discussion Template to Define Scenarios for a Grid Integration Study [Slides]

This presentation template provides examples of questions that can inform the definition of assumptions for the business-as-usual and high-RE scenarios for a grid integration study. The presentation also includes examples of scenario selection from other integration studies. This template is a companion to the document 'Variable Renewable Energy Grid Integration Studies: A Guidebook for Practitioners.'

Global Security: 5-10 Year Strategy [Slides]

Global Security delivers innovative engineering solutions to protect the nation from strategic threats home and abroad. Global Security programs focus on developing and implementing technical solutions to address global security challenges through three enduring missions: Global Monitoring, Preventing Proliferation, and Nuclear Weapon Security.

The Potential of Quantum Annealing for Rapid Solution Structure Identification [Slides]

This presentation covers a framework for categorizing heuristics including neighborhood size, iterated local search, and performance metrics. The question, "How does Quantum Annealing stack up?" is addressed through Random with Fields (RANF-1), Biased Ferromagnet (BFM), and Corrupted Biased Ferromagnet (CBFM). Concluding thoughts are then given.

Shocks in the Scrape-off Layer: Hydrodynamical Aspects (Summary) [Slides]

Hydrodynamical model provides a robust description of mass, momentum, and energy transfer. It can be used for benchmarking hydrodynamical modules of SOL codes. It clarifies the role of boundary conditions at the end-plates. It provides a “geometrical” model for partition of power flows between two divertor legs, both for the steady-state and pulsed flows. It indicates possible presence of shocks in the divertor legs. A framework for finding the shock location and strength has been developed.

Moore ME Feb 18 2019 aerosol class for Northern NM College [Slides)

This presentation was prepared for the request from Northern New Mexico College. "For your talk I’m thinking a bit more detail about the specific sampler you’re bringing, and the types in use at LANL, then setup and ops check, loading and removing a filter, cutting out the right size circle, reading the sample (we have a couple Eberline SAC-4s and Ludlum 2929s here), and radon/daughters corrections."

MAD using INRAD and Radiography [Slides]

We have previously evaluated Intrinsic Radiation Detection Algorithms from vendors for the Department of Homeland Security. These algorithms have limited spectra capability due to both the relatively low spectral content of the signal due to the use of PVT in the Radiation Portal detectors as well as relatively simple algorithms which are based on energy windowing and other simple algorithms to perform classification of Special Nuclear Material. Current detection algorithms are suceptible to nuissance alarms due to Naturally Occuring Radiation (NORM) and variations in background suppression. In this work, we propose to fuse the intrinsic radiation and radiographic data in conjunction with well-established machine learning algorithms to developed enhanced Threat Object detection capability.
