Cerium(IV) Enhances the Catalytic Oxidation Activity of Single-Site Cu Active Sites in MOFs

The rates of catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane and CO are four and twenty times higher, respectively, with Cu supported on a cerium-based MOF than on the structurally analogous zirconium material. Both Ce- and Zr-based copper catalysts feature uncommon threecoordinate CuII sites bearing different nuclearities, as observed by Cu K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. These findings offer molecular-level understanding of the metal-support interface in MOF catalysts and establish correlations with the more established literature on zirconia and ceria-supported heterogeneous catalysis.

Sliceable, Moldable, and Highly Conductive Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Batteries

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) require solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, stability, and deformability for optimal energy and power density. Here, we developed lithium-deficient lithium yttrium bromide (LYB) solid electrolytes, Li 3–x YBr 6–x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50), using a comelting method with controlled lithium deficiency. These electrolytes exhibit favorable mechanical properties such as high moldability and sliceability. The Li 2.65 YBr 5.65 composition has an ionic conductivity of 4.49 mS cm –1 at 25 °C and an activation energy of 0.28 eV. Compared to Li 3 YBr 6 , Li 2.65 YBr 5.65 demonstrates improved rate performance and cycling stability in ASSBs. High-resolution X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of the LYB phase with a C2/m space group. Structural analysis reveals increased cation disorder and larger polyhedral volumes for x > 0 in Li 3–x YBr 6–x , contributing to reduced Li + migration energy barriers. Bond valence site energy calculations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal enhanced 3D lithium-ion transport. NMR spectroscopy further highlights increased Li + dynamics and impurity elimination.

Developing a Chemical and Structural Understanding of the Surface Oxide in a Niobium Superconducting Qubit

We report superconducting thin films of niobium have been extensively employed in transmon qubit architectures. Although these architectures have demonstrated remarkable improvements in recent years, further improvements in performance through materials engineering will aid in large-scale deployment. Here, we use information retrieved from secondary ion mass spectrometry and electron microscopy to conduct a detailed assessment of the surface oxide that forms in ambient conditions for transmon test qubit devices patterned from a niobium film. We observe that this oxide exhibits a varying stoichiometry with NbO and NbO 2 found closer to the niobium film and Nb 2 O 5 found closer to the surface. In terms of structural analysis, we find that the Nb 2 O 5 region is semicrystalline in nature and exhibits randomly oriented grains on the order of 1-2 nm corresponding to monoclinic N-Nb 2 O 5 that are dispersed throughout an amorphous matrix. Using fluctuation electron microscopy, we are able to map the relative crystallinity in the Nb 2 O 5 region with nanometer spatial resolution. Through this correlative method, we observe that amorphous regions are more likely to contain oxygen vacancies and exhibit weaker bonds between the niobium and oxygen atoms. Based on these findings, we expect that oxygen vacancies likely serve as a decoherence mechanism in quantum systems.

Tuning Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) Topology by Regulating Ligand and Secondary Building Unit (SBU) Geometry: Structures Built on 8-Connected M 6 (M = Zr, Y) Clusters and a Flexible Tetracarboxylate for Propane-Selective Propane/Propylene Separation

Topology evolution originating from variations of linker and SBU (Secondary Building Unit) geometries could largely enrich the chemistry of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Here we report the synthesis and characterization of three MOF structures built on the same organic linker, N,N,N',N'-Tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (tcppda) and similar 8-connected M 6 (M = Zr or Y) clusters. The three compounds, HIAM-402, HIAM-403, and HIAM-311, feature 4,8-connected sqc, scu, and flu topology, respectively. Detailed structural analysis revealed that different geometries of the inorganic M 6 SBUs as well as the organic linker have led to the formation of distinct MOF nets. In particular, HIAM-402 features exceptional framework stability and high porosity and acts as a propane-selective adsorbent for the discrimination of propane and propylene. Its balanced adsorption selectivity (S propane/propylene = 1.43) and capacity (Q propane = 133.3 cm 3 /g, 298 K and 1 bar) endow it with the capability of separating propane and propylene mixtures and one-step production of highly pure propylene (purity >99.9%), as validated by column breakthrough measurements, with the presence of moisture or propyne. As a result, ab initio calculations further confirm that the propane-selective behavior of HIAM-402 is a result of its higher binding energy toward propane compared to that of propylene.

Chemical Framework to Design Linear-like Relaxors toward Capacitive Energy Storage

ABO 3 -type perovskite relaxor ferroelectrics (RFEs) have emerged as the preferred option for dielectric capacitive energy storage. However, the compositional design of RFEs with high energy density and efficiency poses significant challenges owing to the vast compositional space and the absence of general rules. Here, we present an atomic-level chemical framework that captures inherent characteristics in terms of radius and ferroelectric activity of ions. By categorizing A/B-site ions as host framework, rattling, ferroelectrically active, and blocking ions and assembling these four types of ions with specific criteria, linear-like relaxors with weak locally correlated and highly extendable unit-cell polarization vectors can be constructed. As example, we demonstrate two new compositions of Bi 0.5 K 0.5 TiO 3- based and BaTiO 3- based relaxors, showing extremely high recoverable energy densities of 17.3 and 12.1 J cm –3 , respectively, both with a high efficiency of about 90%. Further, the role of different types of ions in forming heterogeneous polar structures is identified through element-specific local structure analysis using neutron total scattering combined with reverse Monte Carlo modeling. Further, our work not only opens up new avenues toward rational compositional design of high energy storage performance lead-free RFEs but also sheds light on atomic-level manipulation of functional properties in compositionally complex ferroelectrics.

Unveiling the Multielectron Acceptor Properties of π-Expanded Pyracylene: Reversible Boat to Chair Conversion

In this work, the chemical reduction of a hybrid pyracylene-hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HPH) nanographene was investigated with different alkali metals (Na, K, Rb) to reveal its remarkable multielectron acceptor abilities. The UV–vis and 1 H NMR spectroscopy monitoring of the stepwise reduction reactions supports the existence of all intermediate reduction states up to the hexaanion for HPH. Tuning the experimental conditions enabled the synthesis of the HPH anions with gradually increasing reduction states (up to –5) isolated with different alkali metal ions as crystalline materials. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure analysis demonstrates that the highly negatively charged HPH anions (–4 and –5) exhibit a drastic geometry change from boat-shaped (observed in the neutral parent, mono- and dianions) to a chair conformation, which was proved to be fully reversible by NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations show that this geometry change is induced by an enhanced interaction between the coordinated metal ions and negatively charged HPH core in the chair conformation.

Alternant Hydrocarbon Diradicals as Optically Addressable Molecular Qubits

High-spin molecules allow for bottom-up qubit design and are promising platforms for magnetic sensing and quantum information science. Optical addressability of molecular electron spins has also been proposed in first-row transition-metal complexes via optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) mechanisms analogous to the diamond-nitrogen-vacancy color center. However, significantly less progress has been made on the front of metal-free molecules, which can deliver lower costs and milder environmental impacts. At present, most luminescent open-shell organic molecules are π-diradicals, but such systems often suffer from poor ground-state open-shell characters necessary to realize a stable ground-state molecular qubit. In this work, we use alternancy symmetry to selectively minimize radical–radical interactions in the ground state, generating π-systems with high diradical characters. We call them m-dimers, referencing the need to covalently link two benzylic radicals at their meta carbon atoms for the desired symmetry. Through a detailed electronic structure analysis, we find that the excited states of alternant hydrocarbon m-diradicals contain important symmetries that can be used to construct ODMR mechanisms leading to ground-state spin polarization. Furthermore, the molecular parameters are set in the context of a tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl (TTM) radical dimer covalently tethered at the meta position, demonstrating the feasibility of alternant m-diradicals as molecular color centers.

Rooting binder-free tin nanoarrays into copper substrate via tin-copper alloying for robust energy storage

The need for high-energy batteries has driven the development of binder-free electrode architectures. However, the weak bonding between the electrode particles and the current collector cannot withstand the severe volume change of active materials upon battery cycling, which largely limit the large-scale application of such electrodes. Using tin nanoarrays electrochemically deposited on copper substrate as an example, here we demonstrate a strategy of strengthening the connection between electrode and current collector by thermally alloying tin and copper at their interface. The locally formed tin-copper alloys are electron-conductive and meanwhile electrochemically inactive, working as an ideal "glue" robustly bridging tin and copper to survive harsh cycling conditions in sodium ion batteries. The working mechanism of the alloy "glue" is further characterized through a combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic structural analysis and in situ X-ray diffraction, presenting itself as a promising strategy for engineering binder-free electrode with endurable performance. The authors here report a binder-free electrode based on tin nanoarrays deposited on copper substrate. It is found that the locally formed electrochemically inactive tin-copper alloys work as a glue that bridges tin and copper to survive harsh cycling conditions in sodium ion batteries.

Development of a thermophilic coculture for corn fiber conversion to ethanol

Abstract The fiber in corn kernels, currently unutilized in the corn to ethanol process, represents an opportunity for introduction of cellulose conversion technology. We report here that Clostridium thermocellum can solubilize over 90% of the carbohydrate in autoclaved corn fiber, including its hemicellulose component glucuronoarabinoxylan (GAX). However, Thermoanaerobacterium thermosaccharolyticum or several other described hemicellulose-fermenting thermophilic bacteria can only partially utilize this GAX. We describe the isolation of a previously undescribed organism, Herbinix spp . strain LL1355, from a thermophilic microbiome that can consume 85% of the recalcitrant GAX. We sequence its genome, and based on structural analysis of the GAX, identify six enzymes that hydrolyze GAX linkages. Combinations of up to four enzymes are successfully expressed in T. thermosaccharolyticum . Supplementation with these enzymes allows T. thermosaccharolyticum to consume 78% of the GAX compared to 53% by the parent strain and increases ethanol yield from corn fiber by 24%.

Colloidal CdSe nanocrystals are inherently defective

Abstract Colloidal CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) have shown promise in applications ranging from LED displays to medical imaging. Their unique photophysics depend sensitively on the presence or absence of surface defects. Using simulations, we show that CdSe NCs are inherently defective; even for stoichiometric NCs with perfect ligand passivation and no vacancies or defects, we still observe that the low energy spectrum is dominated by dark, surface-associated excitations, which are more numerous in larger NCs. Surface structure analysis shows that the majority of these states involve holes that are localized on two-coordinate Se atoms. As chalcogenide atoms are not passivated by any Lewis base ligand, varying the ligand should not dramatically change the number of dark states, which we confirm by simulating three passivation schemes. Our results have significant implications for understanding CdSe NC photophysics, and suggest that photochemistry and short-range photoinduced charge transfer should be much more facile than previously anticipated.

Structural insight on assembly-line catalysis in terpene biosynthesis

Fusicoccadiene synthase from Phomopsis amygdali (PaFS) is a unique bifunctional terpenoid synthase that catalyzes the first two steps in the biosynthesis of the diterpene glycoside Fusicoccin A, a mediator of 14-3-3 protein interactions. The prenyltransferase domain of PaFS generates geranylgeranyl diphosphate, which the cyclase domain then utilizes to generate fusicoccadiene, the tricyclic hydrocarbon skeleton of Fusicoccin A. Here, we use cryo-electron microscopy to show that the structure of full-length PaFS consists of a central octameric core of prenyltransferase domains, with the eight cyclase domains radiating outward via flexible linker segments in variable splayed-out positions. Cryo-electron microscopy and chemical crosslinking experiments additionally show that compact conformations can be achieved in which cyclase domains are more closely associated with the prenyltransferase core. This structural analysis provides a framework for understanding substrate channeling, since most of the geranylgeranyl diphosphate generated by the prenyltransferase domains remains on the enzyme for cyclization to form fusicoccadiene.

Coupling sensor to enzyme in the voltage sensing phosphatase

Voltage-sensing phosphatases (VSPs) dephosphorylate phosphoinositide (PIP) signaling lipids in response to membrane depolarization. VSPs possess an S4-containing voltage sensor domain (VSD), resembling that of voltage-gated cation channels, and a lipid phosphatase domain (PD). The mechanism by which voltage turns on enzyme activity is unclear. Structural analysis and modeling suggest several sites of VSD-PD interaction that could couple voltage sensing to catalysis. Voltage clamp fluorometry reveals voltage-driven rearrangements in three sites implicated earlier in enzyme activation—the VSD-PD linker, gating loop and R loop—as well as the N-terminal domain, which has not yet been explored. N-terminus mutations perturb both rearrangements in the other segments and enzyme activity. Our results provide a model for a dynamic assembly by which S4 controls the catalytic site.

p14 ARF forms meso-scale assemblies upon phase separation with NPM1

NPM1 is an abundant nucleolar chaperone that, in addition to facilitating ribosome biogenesis, contributes to nucleolar stress responses and tumor suppression through its regulation of the p14 Alternative Reading Frame tumor suppressor protein (p14 ARF ). Oncogenic stress induces p14 ARF to inhibit MDM2, stabilize p53 and arrest the cell cycle. Under non-stress conditions, NPM1 stabilizes p14 ARF in nucleoli, preventing its degradation and blocking p53 activation. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of p14 ARF by NPM1 are unclear because the structural features of the p14 ARF -NPM1 complex were elusive. Here we show that p14 ARF assembles into a gel-like meso-scale network upon phase separation with NPM1. This assembly is mediated by intermolecular contacts formed by hydrophobic residues in an α-helix and β-strands within a partially folded N-terminal portion of p14 ARF . These hydrophobic interactions promote phase separation with NPM1, enhance p14 ARF nucleolar partitioning, restrict NPM1 diffusion within condensates and nucleoli, and reduce cellular proliferation. Our structural analysis provides insights into the multifaceted chaperone function of NPM1 in nucleoli by mechanistically linking the nucleolar localization of p14 ARF to its partial folding and meso-scale assembly upon phase separation with NPM1.

Structural determinants for pH-dependent activation of a plant metacaspase

Arabidopsis thaliana metacaspase 9 (AtMC9) plays roles in clearing dead cells, forming xylem vessels, and regulating immunity and programmed cell death in plants. The protease's activation is controlled by pH levels, but the exact structural mechanism behind this has not been elucidated. In this work, high-resolution crystal structures for AtMC9 at active (pH 5.5 and pH 4.2) and inactive (pH 7.5) conditions are reported. The three structures are similar except for local conformations where their hydrogen bonding interactions with solvents are mediated through the protonation of specific titratable amino acid residues' side chains. By combining structural analysis, molecular dynamics simulations under constant pHs, and biochemical assays coupled with site-directed mutagenesis, we show that the regulation of AtMC9 activation involves multiple titratable glutamate and histidine residues across the three domains of p20, linker, and p10. Specifically, deprotonated Glu112, His193, and His208 can suppress AtMC9 proteolytic activity, while protonation of Glu255 and His307 at acidic pH may promote it. This study provides valuable insights into the pH-dependent activation of AtMC9 and could potentially lead to improving crops with enhanced immunity and controlled cell death, ultimately increasing agricultural productivity.

Phosphorylation toggles the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein between two membrane-associated condensate states

Abstract The Nucleocapsid protein (N) of SARS-CoV-2 plays a critical role in the viral lifecycle by regulating RNA replication and by packaging the viral genome. N and RNA phase separate to form condensates that may be important for these functions. Both functions occur at membrane surfaces, but how N toggles between these two membrane-associated functional states is unclear. Here, we reveal that phosphorylation switches how N condensates interact with membranes, in part by modulating condensate material properties. Our studies also show that phosphorylation alters N’s interaction with viral membrane proteins. We gain mechanistic insight through structural analysis and molecular simulations, which suggest phosphorylation induces a conformational change in N that softens condensate material properties. Together, our findings identify membrane association as a key feature of N condensates and provide mechanistic insights into the regulatory role of phosphorylation. Understanding this mechanism suggests potential therapeutic targets for COVID infection.

A highly active Burkholderia polyketoacyl-CoA thiolase for production of triacetic acid lactone

Triacetic acid lactone (TAL) is a versatile platform chemical traditionally biosynthesized via decarboxylative Claisen condensation by 2-pyrone synthase. However, this route is limited by poor efficiency and dependence on malonyl-CoA. Here, we show that non-decarboxylative Claisen condensation by polyketoacyl-CoA thiolases offers a more efficient alternative. Through mining homologs of a previously reported enzyme from Cupriavidus necator, we identify five thiolases with TAL production activity. One candidate, BktBbr from Burkholderia sp. RF2-non_BP3, exhibits approximately 30-fold higher activity in vitro and supports 30-fold higher TAL titers in Escherichia coli compared to the original enzyme. Fed-batch fermentation achieves titers up to 2.8 g L⁻¹. Structural analysis of BktBbr co-crystallized with CoA esters guides rational engineering to further enhance performance. Our discovery of a highly active thiolase establishes an alternative enzymatic route to produce TAL efficiently, providing a scalable foundation for sustainable biomanufacturing.

Influence of AA6061 surface preparation on the resistance to surface degradation of thermally grown boehmite films

Understanding substrate–coating interactions is crucial for designing durable, corrosion-resistant systems. This study investigates the effects of surface treatments— polishing, acid etching, and alkaline etching—on AA6061 aluminum alloy and its thermally grown boehmite coatings. Surface treatments were found to significantly alter boehmite film properties by modifying the alloy’s surface composition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a 10% alumina drop after acid etching alongside chemisorbed species formation in wet treatments. Structural analysis, including grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and TEM, showed α-Al 2 O 3 formation on polished surfaces, improving wear resistance but inducing cathodic E corr shifts, pointing to higher corrosion susceptibility. In contrast, acid and alkaline etching produced anodic E corr shifts with stable, pit-free films observed via potentiodynamic scans. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy highlighted reduced oxide resistance with extended boehmite growth. The findings emphasize the role of surface pre-treatments and boehmite optimization in balancing durability and corrosion resistance for AA6061 substrates.

Removal and recovery of ammonia from simulated wastewater using Ti3C2Tx MXene in flow electrode capacitive deionization

Abstract Flowing electrode capacitive deionization systems (FE-CDI) have recently garnered attention because of their ability to prevent cross contamination and operate in uninterrupted cycles ad infinitum. Typically, FE-CDI electrodes suffer from low conductivity, reducing deionization performance. Utilization of higher mass loadings to combat this leads to poor rheological properties. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was introduced as 1 mg mL −1 slurry electrodes in an FE-CDI system for the removal and recovery of ammonia from simulated agricultural wastewater. The electrode performance was evaluated by operating the FE-CDI system with a feed solution of 500 mg L −1 NH 4 Cl running in batch mode at a constant voltage of 1.20 and −1.20 V in charging and discharging modes, respectively. Despite the low loading, Ti 3 C 2 T x flowing electrodes showed markedly improved performance, achieving 60% ion removal efficiency in a saturation time of 115 min with an adsorption capacity of 460 mg g −1 . To understand the high adsorption performance of the electrodes, physiochemical and structural analysis was done via a variety of characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, DLS, and Raman spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge profiles were obtained to evaluate the electrochemical properties of the electrodes. The system proved to be an energy-saving technology by exhibiting a charge efficiency of 58–70% while operating at an energy consumption of 0.45 kWh kg −1 . A 92% regeneration efficiency showed that the electrodes were stable and suitable for long term and scalable usage. The results demonstrate that MXenes have the potential to improve the FE-CDI process for energy-efficient removal and recovery of ammonia.
