Severe storm electricity

Severe storms and lightning were measured with a NASA U2 and ground based facilities, both fixed base and mobile. Aspects of this program are reported. The following results are presented: (1) ground truth measurements of lightning for comparison with those obtained by the U2. These measurements include flash type identification, electric field changes, optical waveforms, and ground strike location; (2) simultaneous extremely low frequency (ELF) waveforms for cloud to ground (CG) flashes; (3) the CG strike location system (LLP) using a combination of mobile laboratory and television video data are assessed; (4) continued development of analog-to-digital conversion techniques for processing lightning data from the U2, mobile laboratory, and NSSL sensors; (5) completion of an all azimuth TV system for CG ground truth; (6) a preliminary analysis of both IC and CG lightning in a mesocyclone; and (7) the finding of a bimodal peak in altitude lightning activity in some storms in the Great Plains and on the east coast. In the forms on the Great Plains, there was a distinct class of flash what forms the upper mode of the distribution. These flashes are smaller horizontal extent, but occur more frequently than flashes in the lower mode of the distribution.

Growth of Triglycine Sulfate (TGS) crystals aboard Spacelab-3

An experiment to study the growth of single crystals of triglycine sulfate (NH2CH2COOH)3 H2SO4 (TGS) was successfully carried out on the Spacelab-3 mission during April 29 to May 6, 1985. Two crystals of TGS were grown during the flight, using a specially developed cooled sting technique of solution crystal growth. For the first time in any flight experiment the growth was monitored on-board as well as on ground by video-schlieren technique. Hundreds of holograms were taken for the solution/crystal interaction during the growth process. Preliminary results indicate that the optical system worked very well and the quality of reconstructed holograms is satisfactory. The cooled sting technique was successfully demonstrated. Holographic interferograms indicate convection free, diffusion limited growth. Some of the preliminary results of crystal quality are also presented.

Programmable remapper with single flow architecture

The invention relates to image processing systems and methods and in particular to a machine which accepts a real time video image in the form of a matrix of picture elements (pixels) and remaps such image according to a selectable one of a plurality of mapping functions to create an output matrix of pixels. Such mapping functions, or transformations, may be any one of a number of different transformations depending on the objective of the user of the system. The system remaps input images from one coordinate system to another using a set of look-up tables for the data necessary for the transform. The transforms, which are operator selectable, are precomputed and loaded into massive look-up tables. Input pixels, via the look-up tables of any particular transform selected, are mapped into output pixels with the radiance information of the input pixels being appropriately weighted. An earlier embodiment of the system included two parallel processors: a collective processor which mapped multiple input pixels into a single output pixel and an interpolative processor. The interpolative processor performed an interpolation among pixels in the input image where a given input pixel may affect the value of many output pixels. Several advantages are provided over previous embodiments in that the two distinct processors are replaced by a single processor capable of performing both types of operations (collective and interpolative) with no more complexity. Previously, there has existed no image processor or 'remapper' that can operate with sufficient speed and flexibility to permit investigating different transformation patterns in real time.

Development of a machine vision system for automated structural assembly

Research is being conducted at the LaRC to develop a telerobotic assembly system designed to construct large space truss structures. This research program was initiated within the past several years, and a ground-based test-bed was developed to evaluate and expand the state of the art. Test-bed operations currently use predetermined ('taught') points for truss structural assembly. Total dependence on the use of taught points for joint receptacle capture and strut installation is neither robust nor reliable enough for space operations. Therefore, a machine vision sensor guidance system is being developed to locate and guide the robot to a passive target mounted on the truss joint receptacle. The vision system hardware includes a miniature video camera, passive targets mounted on the joint receptacles, target illumination hardware, and an image processing system. Discrimination of the target from background clutter is accomplished through standard digital processing techniques. Once the target is identified, a pose estimation algorithm is invoked to determine the location, in three-dimensional space, of the target relative to the robots end-effector. Preliminary test results of the vision system in the Automated Structural Assembly Laboratory with a range of lighting and background conditions indicate that it is fully capable of successfully identifying joint receptacle targets throughout the required operational range. Controlled optical bench test results indicate that the system can also provide the pose estimation accuracy to define the target position.

On line quantification of crystal surfaces by stereo imaging

The shape of an interface while a crystal is growing inside a crystal growth furnace is an important measurement to assess the crystal quality on-line. If the crystal surface can be visualized by video or x ray imaging, the interface shape can be determined by the stereo image processing techniques. This paper presents a methodology to determine the shape of the solid-melt interface by stereo based imaging techniques while the crystal is growing inside a transparent furnace. The methodology generates qualitative shape information provided that a good pair of stereo images of the interface can be captured. For a quantitative shape description, i.e., for the determination of interface points with respect to a fixed coordinate frame, both cameras must be calibrated. This paper illustrates the methodology for qualitative shape determination of lead bromide crystal interface.

Plasma arc welding weld imaging

A welding torch for plasma arc welding apparatus has a transparent shield cup disposed about the constricting nozzle, the cup including a small outwardly extending polished lip. A guide tube extends externally of the torch and has a free end adjacent to the lip. First and second optical fiber bundle assemblies are supported within the guide tube. Light from a strobe light is transmitted along one of the assemblies to the free end and through the lip onto the weld site. A lens is positioned in the guide tube adjacent to the second assembly and focuses images of the weld site onto the end of the fiber bundle of the second assembly and these images are transmitted along the second assembly to a video camera so that the weld site may be viewed continuously for monitoring the welding process.

End-to-End Data System Architecture for the Space Station Biological Research Project

The Space Station Biological Research Project (SSBRP) Is developing hardware referred to as the "facility" for providing life sciences research capability on the International Space Station. This hardware includes several biological specimen habitats, habitat holding racks, a centrifuge and a glovebox. An SSBRP end to end data system architecture has been developed to allow command and control of the facility from the ground, either with crew assistance or autonomously. The data system will be capable of handling commands, sensor data, and video from multiple cameras. The data will traverse through several onboard and ground networks and processing entities including the SSBRP and Space Station onboard and ground data systems. A large number of onboard and ground (,entities of the data system are being developed by the Space Station Program, other NASA centers and the International Partners. The SSBRP part of the system which includes the habitats, holding racks, and the ground operations center, User Operations Facility (UOF) will be developed by a multitude of geographically distributed development organizations. The SSBRP has the responsibility to define the end to end data and communications systems to make the interfaces manageable and verifiable with multiple contractors with widely varying development constraints and schedules. This paper provides an overview of the SSBRP end-to-end data system. Specifically, it describes the hardware, software and functional interactions of individual systems, and interface requirements among various entities of the end-to-end system.

Web Audio/Video Streaming Tool

In order to promote NASA-wide educational outreach program to educate and inform the public of space exploration, NASA, at Kennedy Space Center, is seeking efficient ways to add more contents to the web by streaming audio/video files. This project proposes a high level overview of a framework for the creation, management, and scheduling of audio/video assets over the web. To support short-term goals, the prototype of a web-based tool is designed and demonstrated to automate the process of streaming audio/video files. The tool provides web-enabled users interfaces to manage video assets, create publishable schedules of video assets for streaming, and schedule the streaming events. These operations are performed on user-defined and system-derived metadata of audio/video assets stored in a relational database while the assets reside on separate repository. The prototype tool is designed using ColdFusion 5.0.

Comparison of DNA fragmentation and color thresholding for objective quantitation of apoptotic cells

Apoptosis is a process of cell death characterized by distinctive morphological changes and fragmentation of cellular DNA. Using video imaging and color thresholding techniques, we objectively quantitated the number of cultured CD4+ T-lymphoblastoid cells (HUT78 cells, RH9 subclone) displaying morphological signs of apoptosis before and after exposure to gamma-irradiation. The numbers of apoptotic cells measured by objective video imaging techniques were compared to numbers of apoptotic cells measured in the same samples by sensitive apoptotic assays that quantitate DNA fragmentation. DNA fragmentation assays gave consistently higher values compared with the video imaging assays that measured morphological changes associated with apoptosis. These results suggest that substantial DNA fragmentation can precede or occur in the absence of the morphological changes which are associated with apoptosis in gamma-irradiated RH9 cells.

Development and Calibration of a Field-Deployable Microphone Phased Array for Propulsion and Airframe Noise Flyover Measurements

A new aeroacoustic measurement capability has been developed consisting of a large channelcount, field-deployable microphone phased array suitable for airframe noise flyover measurements for a range of aircraft types and scales. The array incorporates up to 185 hardened, weather-resistant sensors suitable for outdoor use. A custom 4-mA current loop receiver circuit with temperature compensation was developed to power the sensors over extended cable lengths with minimal degradation of the signal to noise ratio and frequency response. Extensive laboratory calibrations and environmental testing of the sensors were conducted to verify the design's performance specifications. A compact data system combining sensor power, signal conditioning, and digitization was assembled for use with the array. Complementing the data system is a robust analysis system capable of near real-time presentation of beamformed and deconvolved contour plots and integrated spectra obtained from array data acquired during flyover passes. Additional instrumentation systems needed to process the array data were also assembled. These include a commercial weather station and a video monitoring / recording system. A detailed mock-up of the instrumentation suite (phased array, weather station, and data processor) was performed in the NASA Langley Acoustic Development Laboratory to vet the system performance. The first deployment of the system occurred at Finnegan Airfield at Fort A.P. Hill where the array was utilized to measure the vehicle noise from a number of sUAS (small Unmanned Aerial System) aircraft. A unique in-situ calibration method for the array microphones using a hovering aerial sound source was attempted for the first time during the deployment.

Cross-correlation and image alignment for multi-band IR sensors

We present the development of a cross-‐correlation algorithm for correlating objects in the long wave, mid wave and short wave Infrared sensor arrays. The goal is to align the images in the multi-‐ sensor suite by correlating multiple key features in the images. Due to the wavelength differences, the object appears very differently in the sensor images even the sensors focus on the same object. In order to perform accurate correlation of the same object in the multi-‐band images, we perform image processing on the images so that the features of the object become similar to each other. Fourier domain band pass filters are used to enhance the images. Mexican Hat and Gaussian Derivative Wavelets are used to further enhance the features of the object. A Python based QT graphical user interface has been implemented to carry out the process. We show reliable results of the cross-‐correlation of the objects in multiple band videos.

A fuzzy measure approach to motion frame analysis for scene detection

This paper addresses a solution to the problem of scene estimation of motion video data in the fuzzy set theoretic framework. Using fuzzy image feature extractors, a new algorithm is developed to compute the change of information in each of two successive frames to classify scenes. This classification process of raw input visual data can be used to establish structure for correlation. The algorithm attempts to fulfill the need for nonlinear, frame-accurate access to video data for applications such as video editing and visual document archival/retrieval systems in multimedia environments.

Influence of Process Parameters and Alloy Composition on Crack Mitigation in Selective Laser Melting

Microcracking and residual stresses are key limitations of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), an additive manufacturing (AM) technique that uses a high power laser to consolidate successive layers of metal powder. For tungsten, these microcracks find their origin in the combination of a ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) between 200°C and 400°C and high residual stresses. This work utilized in situ high speed video to capture the cracking mechanisms, and combined the experimental results with thermomechanical modeling to unveil correlations between crack network morphology and process parameter-related variables, such as the local temperature and residual stress distributions. Consequently, preheating and alloying with rare earth oxides were adopted as possible crack mitigation strategies, the efficacy of which was tested against the initial fundamental baseline results. Preheating temperatures above 500°C eliminated all cracking, though this threshold is expected to be higher when tungsten powder (higher oxygen content) is introduced. Alloying can serve as an active oxygen getter in the system, but the rare earth oxides in this work were too large to have significant contributions to crack-mitigation.

The cognitive connection: Software maintenance and documentation

With the goal of trying to understand what software maintainers do, talking aloud, video taped protocols with four expert maintainers were conducted as they were actively engaged in the process of enhancing a relatively small, interactive database program. The subjects exhibited a number of different types of information gathering strategies. Underlying these patterns of behavior, however, was the use of expectations about what should be seen in the program under examination. These expectations were generated on the basis of knowledge previously acquired as to the goals and programming plans that are typically employed in realizing interactive database programs. Thus, while the experts seemed to posses adequate programming knowledge, their actual code patches violated a basic principle of program structure. This failure by the programmers was attributed to ineffective program documentation. Suggestions for changes in the content of program documentation that should better facilitate software maintenance are presented.
