PAH101: A GW+BSE Dataset of 101 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Molecular Crystals

Abstract The excited-state properties of molecular crystals are important for applications in organic electronic devices. TheGWapproximation and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW+BSE) is the state-of-the-art method for calculating the excited-state properties of crystalline solids with periodic boundary conditions. We present the PAH101 dataset ofGW+BSE calculations for 101 molecular crystals of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with up to ~500 atoms in the unit cell. To the best of our knowledge, this is the firstGW+BSE dataset for molecular crystals. The data records include theGWquasiparticle band structure, the fundamental band gap, the static dielectric constant, the first singlet exciton energy (optical gap), the first triplet exciton energy, the dielectric function, and optical absorption spectra for light polarized along the three lattice vectors. The dataset can be used to (i) discover materials with desired electronic/optical properties, (ii) identify correlations between DFT andGW+BSE quantities, and (iii) train machine learned models to help in materials discovery efforts.

Underground Test Area (UGTA) Sampling Plan for Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa, Nevada National Security Site, Nevada

The purpose of this groundwater sampling plan (referred to herein as “the Plan”) is to describe the approach for collecting and analyzing groundwater samples to meet the objectives of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Management (EM) Nevada Program’s Underground Test Area (UGTA) Activity. The Plan is focused on the Central and Western Pahute Mesa corrective action units (CAUs 101 and 102). The remaining UGTA CAUs are in the final stage of the UGTA strategy (Closure Report [CR] stage), and monitoring requirements for these CAUs are described in their respective CRs. The Plan supersedes the Nevada National Security Site Integrated Groundwater Sampling Plan and its ensuing Record of Technical Change (ROTC) (DOE/EMNV, 2019b). The Plan is designed to ensure compliance with the UGTA Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) and its ensuing ROTC (DOE/EMNV, 2018), and the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO) (1996, as amended). The Plan is implemented by the Environmental Program Services (EPS) contractor. Implementation of the Plan provides data to complete corrective actions prescribed by the FFACO to protect the public from groundwater contaminated by historical underground nuclear testing. The Plan’s scope comprises sample collection and analysis requirements for assessing the extent of groundwater contamination from underground nuclear testing. Sampling wells located in the communities surrounding the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) is performed by other organizations (e.g., management and operating [M&O] contractor) and is therefore not included within the Plan. The results of the community sampling are presented in the annual NNSS environmental reports.

Update to the Phase II Corrective Action Investigation Plan for Corrective Action Units 101 and 102, Central and Western Pahute Mesa, Nevada National Security Site, Nye County, Nevada

This report is an update to the Phase II Corrective Action Investigation Plan for Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada (NNSA/NSO, 2009) activities resulting from data collection and analysis conducted between 2009 and 2019. This report contains two sections: (1) a summary of how the new data have informed the updated approach to complete the characterization activities under the corrective action investigation (CAI), and (2) a table documenting the specific activities identified in the CAIP with a status and expected outcome of each activity (see Table A-1 in Appendix A). As stated in Sections 1.5 and 1.5.1 of the CAIP, the CAIP was conceptualized to be iterative, with continuous review and assessment of the data, data analysis, and modeling to provide a guide for decisions regarding additional work. This report provides the revised plan, based on an assessment of the data, to complete the characterization activities identified in the CAIP.

Unclassified Source Term and Radionuclide Data for the Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Model for Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Revision 1

This report documents the evaluation of information and data available on the unclassified source term and radionuclide (RN) contamination for Central and Western Pahute Mesa (PM): Corrective Action Units (CAUs) 101 and 102. The Central and Western PM CAUs constitute two areas of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) used for underground nuclear testing (Figure 1-1). Eighty-five underground nuclear tests were conducted at the PM CAUs between 1965 and 1992 (NNSA/NFO, 2015b). Underground nuclear tests deposit radioactive elements in the subsurface, resulting in groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the underground test locations. At the PM CAUs, the testing resulted in more than 2.68 × 10 7 curies (Ci) of radioactivity (decay-corrected to September 30, 2012) remaining underground (Finnegan et al., 2016). Of the 85 underground nuclear tests conducted at the PM CAUs, three were shallow tests detonated within 200 meters (m) of the surface and referred to as the “near-surface tests”; the remaining 82 were detonated deeper than 200 m below ground surface (bgs) and are referred to as the “deep underground tests” in this document.

Hydrologic Data for the Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Model of Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Revision 1

This hydrologic data document (HDD) has been prepared for Corrective Action Units (CAUs) 101 and 102, Central and Western Pahute Mesa, in order to support the development of a groundwater flow and contaminant transport model. Central and Western Pahute Mesa are two of the five CAUs on the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) (formerly the Nevada Test Site [NTS]) used for underground nuclear testing (Figure 1-1). The nuclear tests resulted in groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the underground test areas. As a result, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Management (EM) Nevada Program is currently conducting a corrective action investigation (CAI) of the Pahute Mesa underground test areas. This work is a part of the Underground Test Area (UGTA) Activity in accordance with the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO) (1996, as amended). The CAU groundwater flow and transport model is composed of two pieces, a flow model and a transport model, that together provide the contaminant boundary forecasts required by the FFACO. The hydrologic data necessary for the flow model portion of the CAU model are presented in this report. The transport data necessary for the transport model portion of the CAU model will be provided in a separate report.

Pits 101: The four types of nuclear weapons modernization activities

We learned why we don’t need plutonium to make new pits in an earlier edition of Pits 101, but why do we need new pits from a national security standpoint? A plutonium pit, or the core of a nuclear weapon, is like a weapon’s battery. The pits that Los Alamos will make in coming years will be like new batteries for nuclear weapons in the existing stockpile. Pit production is mandated in order to meet Department of Defense (DOD) requirements by our primary customer, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which is a semi-autonomous agency within the Department of Energy. NNSA’s mission is to “deliver safe, secure, reliable warheads for an effective nuclear deterrent.” As Marv Adams, head of NNSA Defense Programs, describes, it’s a mission that is simple to state, but challenging to deliver.

Corrective Action Decision Document/Corrective Action Plan for Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa Nevada National Security Site, Nevada (Rev. 1)

This corrective action decision document (CADD)/corrective action plan (CAP) has been prepared for the Central and Western Pahute Mesa (PM) Corrective Action Units (CAUs) 101 and 102. Corrective action is needed because underground radioactive contamination exists in these areas resulting from historic underground nuclear testing. The PM CAUs are located in the northwestern portion of the Nevada National Security Site and comprise 82 corrective action sites. A total of 85 underground nuclear detonations took place within the area covered by the PM CAUs between 1965 and 1992 and resulted in the release of radionuclides (RNs) in the subsurface in the vicinity of the test cavities.

Electric Grid and Markets 101 [Slides]

This presentation covers aspects of operating the bulk power system with a focus on the regulatory levels of the US grid at a pretty introductory level. It was meant ot help inform a request from USDA for a "101" presentation that spoke to how electricity markets, contracting and regulation interact with the engineering and physics of operating the bulk power system. They are presently moving to being able to more directly fund PPAs or other non-co-op owned assets for member co-ops, is my understanding.

The SAGA Survey. IV. The Star Formation Properties of 101 Satellite Systems around Milky Way–mass Galaxies

We present the star-forming properties of 378 satellite galaxies around 101 Milky Way analogs in the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) Survey, focusing on the environmental processes that suppress or quench star formation. In the SAGA stellar mass range of 10 6−10 M ⊙ , we present quenched fractions, star-forming rates, gas-phase metallicities, and gas content. The fraction of SAGA satellites that are quenched increases with decreasing stellar mass and shows significant system-to-system scatter. SAGA satellite quenched fractions are highest in the central 100 kpc of their hosts and decline out to the virial radius. Splitting by specific star formation rate (sSFR), the least star-forming satellite quartile follows the radial trend of the quenched population. The median sSFR of star-forming satellites increases with decreasing stellar mass and is roughly constant with projected radius. Star-forming SAGA satellites are consistent with the star formation rate–stellar mass relationship determined in the Local Volume, while the median gas-phase metallicity is higher and median H i gas mass is lower at all stellar masses. We investigate the dependence of the satellite quenched fraction on host properties. Quenched fractions are higher in systems with larger host halo mass, but this trend is only seen in the inner 100 kpc; we do not see significant trends with host color or star formation rate. Our results suggest that lower-mass satellites and satellites inside 100 kpc are more efficiently quenched in a Milky Way–like environment, with these processes acting sufficiently slowly to preserve a population of star-forming satellites at all stellar masses and projected radii.

The SAGA Survey. III. A Census of 101 Satellite Systems around Milky Way–mass Galaxies

We present Data Release 3 (DR3) of the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) Survey, a spectroscopic survey characterizing satellite galaxies around Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies. The SAGA Survey DR3 includes 378 satellites identified across 101 MW-mass systems in the distance range of 25–40.75 Mpc, and an accompanying redshift catalog of background galaxies (including about 46,000 taken by SAGA) in the SAGA footprint of 84.7 deg 2 . The number of confirmed satellites per system ranges from zero to 13, in the stellar mass range of 10 6−10 M ⊙ . Based on a detailed completeness model, this sample accounts for 94% of the true satellite population down to M ⋆ = 10 7.5 M ⊙ . We find that the mass of the most massive satellite in SAGA systems is the strongest predictor of satellite abundance; one-third of the SAGA systems contain LMC-mass satellites, and they tend to have more satellites than the MW. The SAGA satellite radial distribution is less concentrated than the MW's, and the SAGA quenched fraction below 10 8.5 M ⊙ is lower than the MW's, but in both cases, the MW is within 1σ of SAGA system-to-system scatter. SAGA satellites do not exhibit a clear corotating signal as has been suggested in the MW/M31 satellite systems. Although the MW differs in many respects from the typical SAGA system, these differences can be reconciled if the MW is an older, slightly less massive host with a recently accreted LMC/SMC system.
