Superior Metal‐Organic Framework Activation with Dimethyl Ether

Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are demonstrated to be readily activated by treatment with the low surface tension, low boiling point solvent dimethyl ether (DME). The mildness of the method enables access to high surface areas by avoiding structural changes in the framework that often plague thermal activation methods. A distinction from previous methods is that DME activation succeeds for materials with coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) and non‐CUS MOFs as well. DME displaces solvent molecules occupying the pores of the MOF as well as those coordinated to metal centers; reducing evacuation temperature by using a coordinating, yet highly volatile guest enables low temperature activation with structural retention as demonstrated surface area measurements that match or exceed existing activation protocols.

Efficient near-field ptychography reconstruction using the Hessian operator

X-ray ptychography is a powerful and robust coherent imaging method providing access to the complex object and probe (illumination). Ptychography reconstruction is typically performed using first-order methods due to their computational efficiency. Higher-order methods, while potentially more accurate, are often prohibitively expensive in terms of computation. In this study, we present a mathematical framework for reconstruction using second-order information derived from an efficient computation of the bilinear Hessian and Hessian operator. The formulation is provided for Gaussian-based models, enabling the simultaneous reconstruction of the object, probe, and object positions. Synthetic data tests, along with experimental near-field ptychography data processing, demonstrate a ten-fold reduction in computation time compared to first-order methods. The derived formulas for computing the Hessians, along with the strategies for incorporating them into optimization schemes, are well-structured and easily adaptable to various ptychography problem formulations.

UPC++ v1.0 Programmer’s Guide, Revision 2020.10.0

UPC++ is a C++11 library that provides Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) programming. It is designed for writing parallel programs that run efficiently and scale well on distributed-memory parallel computers. The PGAS model is single program, multiple-data (SPMD), with each separate constituent process having access to local memory as it would in C++. However, PGAS also provides access to a global address space, which is allocated in shared segments that are distributed over the processes. UPC++ provides numerous methods for accessing and using global memory. In UPC++, all operations that access remote memory are explicit, which encourages programmers to be aware of the cost of communication and data movement. Moreover, all remote-memory access operations are by default asynchronous, to enable programmers to write code that scales well even on hundreds of thousands of cores.

Closing the Accuracy Gap in Tandem Photovoltaic Testing: An Accessible and Efficient Spectral Tuning Method Using LED-Based Simulators for Research Laboratories and Industry

Accurate performance calibration of multijunction (MJ) solar cells is critical for advancing this technology toward large-scale terrestrial application, yet existing testing methods developed by photovoltaics calibration laboratories remain prohibitively complex and resource intensive for most research laboratories. Current approaches rely on expensive multisource simulators and/or intricate spectral tuning algorithms, limiting accessibility and hindering standardized comparisons of emerging MJ technologies such as perovskite-based tandems. This paper introduces a streamlined spectral irradiance adjustment method for light-emitting diode (LED)-based solar simulators, which are increasingly adopted in the photovoltaics community due to their versatility and cost-effectiveness. The method we present bins LED channels into groups based on the number of junctions of the MJ photovoltaic device under test (DUT) and their corresponding band gaps and incorporates an automated tuning algorithm that eliminates the need to adjust each channel’s irradiance individually. This tuning algorithm requires the relative spectral responsivities of both the DUT and a broadband reference cell, as well as a calibrated spectroradiometer. Measurement validation across various MJ devices, including III-V and perovskite/silicon tandems, demonstrates excellent agreement within 1% with well-established xenon-tungsten multisource simulators and associated tuning algorithms. By enabling precise spectral tuning with readily available equipment and a simple tuning algorithm, our approach bridges the measurement accuracy gap between research laboratories and accredited testing facilities, fostering more reliable device comparisons and accelerating the translation of MJ technologies into real-world energy systems.

A review of regulatory standard test methods for residential wood heaters and recommendations for their advancement

In many regions, residential wood heaters are a leading source of harmful air pollution but only satisfy a small portion of local heating demands. In response, standardized laboratory test methods have been developed to characterize and limit wood heater emissions. While these test methods are a key tool for advancing both wood heater technology and environmental regulations, many of the experimental procedures are outdated and provide few actionable insights for improving heater performance. Furthermore, these test methods vary widely around the world and may not adequately capture the performance of wood heaters operating in residences. This study presents a comprehensive review of standardized wood heater test methods to identify fundamental experimental objectives and regulated performance metrics. Using the results of this review, recommendations are provided to make the test methods more accessible and representative of residential performance, while generating actionable data to motivate heater design improvements. This study elucidates the current state of standard test methods, and the developments needed to advance clean wood heater technologies and public policies.

Deep-learning-aided forward optical coherence tomography endoscope for percutaneous nephrostomy guidance

Percutaneous renal access is the critical initial step in many medical settings. In order to obtain the best surgical outcome with minimum patient morbidity, an improved method for access to the renal calyx is needed. In our study, we built a forward-view optical coherence tomography (OCT) endoscopic system for percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) guidance. Porcine kidneys were imaged in our experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of the imaging system. Three tissue types of porcine kidneys (renal cortex, medulla, and calyx) can be clearly distinguished due to the morphological and tissue differences from the OCT endoscopic images. To further improve the guidance efficacy and reduce the learning burden of the clinical doctors, a deep-learning-based computer aided diagnosis platform was developed to automatically classify the OCT images by the renal tissue types. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) were developed with labeled OCT images based on the ResNet34, MobileNetv2 and ResNet50 architectures. Nested cross-validation and testing was used to benchmark the classification performance with uncertainty quantification over 10 kidneys, which demonstrated robust performance over substantial biological variability among kidneys. ResNet50-based CNN models achieved an average classification accuracy of 82.6%±3.0%. The classification precisions were 79%±4% for cortex, 85%±6% for medulla, and 91%±5% for calyx and the classification recalls were 68%±11% for cortex, 91%±4% for medulla, and 89%±3% for calyx. Interpretation of the CNN predictions showed the discriminative characteristics in the OCT images of the three renal tissue types. The results validated the technical feasibility of using this novel imaging platform to automatically recognize the images of renal tissue structures ahead of the PCN needle in PCN surgery.

Automated integration gate selection for Gaussian mixture model pulse shape discrimination

Pulse shapes differ between neutron and gamma particles when measured with detector devices employing pulse shape discriminating (PSD) scintillators. Digitized waveforms can be used in detection systems to perform pulse shape discrimination for this application. Prior Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) methods require access to the pulse full-waveform. Reducing the waveform to a smaller set of combined samples reduces computational cost while affecting PSD performance. In this work, we develop a method for selecting the best performing combination of integration gates, or contiguous summed segments of the digitized pulse for PSD. The method uses a discrimination score based on the GMM PSD approach. Furthermore, the final selection is performed using Bayesian Optimization. PSD detection results are compared with varying numbers of selected gates on time-of-flight (TOF) data. This method can be used to fully automate the selection of gates in an unsupervised (without ground truth labels) setting.

Energy-Casimir, dynamically accessible, and Lagrangian stability of extended magnetohydrodynamic equilibria

The formal stability analysis of Eulerian extended magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) equilibria is considered within the noncanonical Hamiltonian framework by means of the energy-Casimir variational principle and the dynamically accessible stability method. Specifically, we find explicit sufficient stability conditions for axisymmetric XMHD and Hall MHD (HMHD) equilibria with toroidal flow and for equilibria with arbitrary flow under constrained perturbations. The dynamically accessible, second-order variation of the Hamiltonian, which can potentially provide explicit stability criteria for generic equilibria, is also obtained. Moreover, we examine the Lagrangian stability of the general quasineutral two-fluid model written in terms of MHD-like variables, by finding the action and the Hamiltonian functionals of the linearized dynamics, working within a mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian framework. Upon neglecting electron mass, we derive a HMHD energy principle, and in addition, the perturbed induction equation arises from Hamilton’s equations of motion in view of a consistency condition for the relation between the perturbed magnetic potential and the canonical variables.

Dynamic wavelength control of laser pulse profiles at picosecond to nanosecond timescales

We report on a novel combined laser pulse shaping and dynamic wavelength encoding capability based on a simple architecture implementing direct space to time mapping. There are several potential applications that can be enabled by the ability to control the instantaneous intensity or wavelength of an optical waveform on a picosecond-to-nanosecond timescale. To our knowledge, no known methods can access this temporal regime with a practical architecture. Here, we demonstrate an extension of the Space–Time Induced Linearly Encoded Transcription for Temporal Optimization (STILETTO) technique that can generate optical waveforms with a programmable instantaneous wavelength vs. time. We experimentally demonstrate the technique by generating self-gated spectrograms and show that it can encode dynamic wavelength vs time profiles at timescales not achievable by any other known method.

Melt State Reinforcement of Polyisoprene by Silica Nanoparticles Grafted with Polyisoprene

Here, we systematically vary the nanoparticle (NP) dispersion state in composites formed by mixing polyisoprene homopolymers with polyisoprene grafted silica particles, and demonstrate how creep measurements allow us to overcome the limitations of small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) experiments. This allows us to access nearly 13 orders in time in the mechanical response of the resulting composites. We find that a specific NP morphology, a percolating particle network achieved at intermediate graft densities, significantly reinforces the system and has a lower NP percolation loading threshold relative to other morphologies. These important effects of morphology only become apparent when we combine creep measurements with SAOS re-emphasizing the role of synergistically combining methods to access the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites over broad frequency ranges.

Memory row recording for mitigating crosstalk in dynamic random access memory

A method includes adding a set of one or more victim rows to a first probabilistic filter and to a second probabilistic filter, in response to a memory access request, identifying a candidate victim row adjacent to a memory address specified by a memory access request, identifying the candidate victim row as a victim row in the set of victim rows based on performing a lookup of the candidate victim row in a selected filter, where the selected filter includes one of the first probabilistic filter and the second probabilistic filter, in response to identifying the candidate row as the victim row, enabling a row hammering countermeasure, clearing the first probabilistic filter in each of a first set of time periods, and clearing the second probabilistic filter in each of a second set of time periods interleaved with the first set of time periods.

On the 3D printability of one-part moisture-curable polyurethanes via direct ink writing (DIW)

Direct ink writing (DIW) is an ambient temperature additive manufacturing (AM) method that accommodates many possible ink materials. Here, in this work, we demonstrate using a moisture-curable commercially available polyurethane (PU) sealant as an alternative ink for DIW. We discussed the fundamentals of PU chemistry and determined the best 3D printing parameters. Studies on rheological, thermogravimetric, spectroscopic characterization, and initial finite element analyses (FEA) showed properties expected from a performance sealant with high elongation and low modulus of a 3D-printed object. This affirms the flexibility of the DIW technique as an accessible AM method amenable for future materials development from commercial model formulations.

Magnetic field mapping of inaccessible regions using physics-informed neural networks

A difficult problem concerns the determination of magnetic field components within an experimentally inaccessible region when direct field measurements are not feasible. In this paper, we propose a new method of accessing magnetic field components using non-disruptive magnetic field measurements on a surface enclosing the experimental region. Magnetic field components in the experimental region are predicted by solving a set of partial differential equations (Ampere’s law and Gauss’ law for magnetism) numerically with the aid of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). Prediction errors due to noisy magnetic field measurements and small number of magnetic field measurements are regularized by the physics information term in the loss function. We benchmark our model by comparing it with an older method. The new method we present will be of broad interest to experiments requiring precise determination of magnetic field components, such as searches for the neutron electric dipole moment.

Upcycling of Polystyrene Waste to Poly(ionic liquid) Materials

The C–H functionalization of commodity polymers could be a promising approach for upcycling plastic waste into advanced materials, which can alter the properties of the original materials through the introduction of different functionalities onto the existing backbone structures. In this study, waste polystyrene (PS) was modified by Friedel–Crafts acylation using 4-chlorobutyryl chloride (4-CBC) followed by reaction with N-alkylimidazoles to form cationic polyelectrolytes. These methods provide access to what are essentially poly(ionic liquid) (poly(IL)) materials with properties that are distinctly different from those of the PS from which they were formed. In one notable example, the glass transition temperature (T g ) of imidazolium-functionalized PS was ∼16 °C, which is a nearly 90 °C reduction from PS. This is also evidenced by macroscopic mechanical properties where the poly(IL) product is highly elastic in stark contrast to brittle PS. Moreover, the resulting ionomers showed self-healing behaviors in the presence of a “free” IL further contributing to the utility of the materials. Here, the methods in this work can open opportunities to utilize waste PS to obtain a vast array of poly(IL) materials with highly tailored structures and properties.

Diastereoselective Hydrogenation of Tetrasubstituted Olefins using a Heterogeneous Pt‐Ni Alloy Catalyst

Abstract Stereoselective hydrogenation of tetrasubstituted olefins is an attractive method to access compounds with two contiguous stereocenters. However, homogeneous catalysts for enantio‐ and diastereoselective hydrogenation exhibit low reactivity toward tetrasubstituted olefins due to steric crowding between the ligand scaffold and the substrate. Monometallic heterogeneous catalysts, on the other hand, provide accessible surface active sites for hindered olefins but exhibit unpredictable and inconsistent stereoinduction. In this work, we develop a Pt−Ni bimetallic alloy catalyst that can diastereoselectively hydrogenate unactivated, sterically‐bulky tetrasubstituted olefins, utilizing the more oxophilic Ni atoms to adsorb a hydroxyl directing group and direct facially‐selective hydrogen addition to the olefin via the Pt atoms. Structure‐activity studies on several Pt−Ni compositions underscore the importance of exposing a uniform PtNi alloy surface to achieve high diastereoselectivity and minimize side reactions. The optimized Pt−Ni/SiO 2 catalyst exhibits good functional group tolerance and broad scope for tetrasubstituted olefins in a cyclopentene scaffold, generating cyclopentanol products with three contiguous stereocenters. The synthetic utility of the method is demonstrated in a four‐step synthesis of (1R,2S)‐(+)‐cis‐methyldihydrojasmonate with high yield and enantiopurity.
