From Obsolete to Optimal (ATR Demineralized Water System)

My project was migrating a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) program from legacy software to a modern platform, enhancing operational efficiency and eliminating unsupported, obsolete equipment. Initially, I used a migration tool to transfer the programs to the new software, then manually updated variables to align with the new PLC. I optimized the PLC code by leveraging new scaling features in the I/O cards, removing over 45 obsolete rungs, and enhancing clarity with functional tag aliases. Next, I modernized the HMI's visuals with an updated color scheme and 3D buttons. I developed multiple interface versions iteratively refining them based on operator feedback. I also designed and created a dedicated "Rounds" screen incorporating insights from a previous intern’s project to streamline daily rounds. To improve clarity, consistency, and efficiency I redesigned the entire interface. Adding visual indicators to enhance operational awareness: red is used for values outside normal specifications, green for normal operating modes, yellow for manual mode, and grey for offline units. Additionally, I added a dynamic visual representation of tank levels, creating PLC logic to show the level in inches as well as inches and feet. I then incorporated a navigation sidebar to facilitate efficient screen transitions. Risk of human error was mitigated by defining narrow input ranges for tank level shutoff and password protecting setpoint changes. I also fixed issues with datatypes that caused inaccuracies in the original code. Overall, this comprehensive upgrade significantly enhanced the HMI's functionality, user experience, and operational reliability.

Projection Analysis for ATR Irradiation of the AFC-FAST Experiment

Analyses of the Advanced Fuels Campaign Fission Accelerated Steady-state Test (AFC-FAST) in the Advanced Test Reactor are presented. A detailed methodology was employed to better account for uncertainties in the planned power and duration of sequential reactor loading cycles. By performing coupled depletion analyses at multiple power levels and durations, the differences in experiment heating outputs can be found. The effects of these uncertainties upon multiple experiment configurations were assessed in an effort to streamline the process of planning for and documenting future irradiations. In conclusion, the data generated from this work have been used to help inform assumptions on subsequent projections to perform only a nominal case depletion.

Report on Preliminary Detailed Experimental Plan for Neutron Irradiation of A709 at ATR and HFIR

Advanced nuclear power technologies will use higher temperatures as a means to extract energy at a higher efficiency than current plants and therefore put a larger demand on the structural materials. Improved performance of structural materials could enable greater safety margins, longer plant lifetimes, and reduce maintenance costs. Alloy 709 is championed as the next generation of austenitic alloys for advanced nuclear reactors. In parallel to the ASME code case pursued, the AMMT program is initiating a neutron irradiation campaign to provide first-of-a-kind engineering data to establish operational design parameters and how the mechanical response is modified by environmental factors. This document refines the AMMT neutron irradiation campaign to a 4 year program to support the generation of creep knockdown factors for Alloy 709 and welded Alloy 709. The campaign is divided among two national laboratories, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, to use the strengths of each laboratory. Through a cooperative plan, time-independent properties and time-dependent properties will be obtained across a large temperature window, nominally 300°C to 800°C, damage levels up to 10 dpa, and with and without the impacts of transmutation produced helium.

The Effects of Beta Irradiation on the Performance of ATR Fiber Probes

The use of real-time inline monitoring to track the chemical composition of slurries is recognized as a promising method to reduce the processing time of Hanford tank waste. The conversion of waste into glass suitable for long-term storage requires adherence to waste acceptance criteria and process control limits that respectively ensure safe operation of the vitrification facility and suitable glass quality. Real-time measurements of blended waste materials can ensure that the various criteria are met or can be addressed in a timely manner.

Testing of Haar-Like Feature in Region of Interest Detection for Automated Target Recognition (ATR) System

The objectives of this project were to develop a ROI (Region of Interest) detector using Haar-like feature similar to the face detection in Intel's OpenCV library, implement it in Matlab code, and test the performance of the new ROI detector against the existing ROI detector that uses Optimal Trade-off Maximum Average Correlation Height filter (OTMACH). The ROI detector included 3 parts: 1, Automated Haar-like feature selection in finding a small set of the most relevant Haar-like features for detecting ROIs that contained a target. 2, Having the small set of Haar-like features from the last step, a neural network needed to be trained to recognize ROIs with targets by taking the Haar-like features as inputs. 3, using the trained neural network from the last step, a filtering method needed to be developed to process the neural network responses into a small set of regions of interests. This needed to be coded in Matlab. All the 3 parts needed to be coded in Matlab. The parameters in the detector needed to be trained by machine learning and tested with specific datasets. Since OpenCV library and Haar-like feature were not available in Matlab, the Haar-like feature calculation needed to be implemented in Matlab. The codes for Adaptive Boosting and max/min filters in Matlab could to be found from the Internet but needed to be integrated to serve the purpose of this project. The performance of the new detector was tested by comparing the accuracy and the speed of the new detector against the existing OTMACH detector. The speed was referred as the average speed to find the regions of interests in an image. The accuracy was measured by the number of false positives (false alarms) at the same detection rate between the two detectors.

Modernizing the Legacy Fission Wire Measurement System for the Advanced Test Reactor-Critical Facility

Operational lifetime extensions of existing research reactors have emphasized the need for refurbishment, replacements, and upgrades to supporting equipment and instrumentation. The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), which entered service in 1967, has recently completed the sixth core internals change-out and has scheduled operations until at least 2040. Reactor maintenance and operational risk management is critically important in the research reactor community, however supporting measurement systems sometimes get overlooked when maintenance is planned. The Fission Wire Measurement System (FWMS) is a custom measurement system designed in the 1960s to measure the beta-particle activity of irradiated uranium-aluminum fission wires. This measurement is conducted to determine the fission rate profile of the Advanced Reactor Test Critical (ATR-C) facility. The ATR-C is an open-pool, low-power test reactor that was purpose driven to resemble ATR and is used to qualify experiment configurations and verify core models prior to full-power experiment irradiations in ATR. A power distribution measurement in ATR-C uses uranium-aluminum wires that are distributed throughout the ATR-C core to validate simulation and modeling results. These measurements require 340 to 1500 wires to be irradiated and measured within a 12-hour window. The activity of the wires is measured in the required time with the FWMS, which was put into service in 1965 at the Radiation Measurements Laboratory (RML). The system consists of 4 measurement channels and one reference channel, each with a 2-pi proportional gas flow detector and the measurement channels each have an automated sample changer. This legacy system is crucial to the continued operations of ATR and has undergone some minor hardware upgrades since 1965, however the system presently relies on custom control boards, custom gas ion chambers, analog amplifiers/discriminators, and a user interface (UI) for the system written in outdated code. Much of the equipment and software is custom with no commercial replacements or support and limited documentation. The existing control software requires an operating system that is no longer supported, creating more vulnerabilities to continued operations. A project is underway with a third-party vendor to design, build, and document a new control and data acquisition system (CDAS) for the FWMS. The new upgrade will replace the control system, computer, UI, sample changer motors, and main power supply while maintaining the interface with existing detector hardware. The upgraded system will be operated in parallel with the current hardware and software to conduct validation testing. This equipment upgrade demonstrates the commitment at ATR to ensuring successful operations and potential future research reactors at INL.

A Workflow to Optimize Fast Neutron Irradiation in A Thermal Neutron Spectrum Test Reactor Leveraging Open-Source Tools

The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) located at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is one of the key nuclear engineering research and testing facilities within the US Department of Energy (DOE). The ATR is one of few high-power research reactors in the world with different application including accelerated testing of nuclear fuel, materials irradiation in a very high neutron flux environment, and medical radioisotope production [1]. Also, the ATR offers opportunities for testing fast spectrum fission and fusion reactor materials. The key challenges in this area are in further detailing and optimizing a fast spectrum environment within a thermal test reactor. This challenge involves researching, developing, and testing novel concepts for the multiplying of neutron populations into ever higher energy spectra in high flux test reactors like ATR. The main objective of this work is to investigate candidate materials for establishing a fast neutron experiment irradiation in thermal neutron spectrum test reactors which can be accomplished by filtering thermal and epithermal neutrons and boosting fast neutrons at designated irradiation positions. However, adding these filters will render the neutron spectrum and the criticality of the system. The selection of the thickness and material layers should be accomplished by developing an optimization design algorithm that is applicable for ATR to enhance the fast neutron spectrum irradiation utilizing high-fidelity Monte Carlo methods along with advanced machine learning capabilities. This paper presents workflow for design optimization to enhance fast neutron irradiation in the ATR. The workflow leverages open-source tools to develop an algorithm that is viable to ATR and can be leveraged in other reactors. The following sections discuss the development of the experiment design optimization workflow and its application to ATR irradiation positions.
