Analysis Report documenting the Assessment of the Solubility of Lead, EDTA and other Organic Ligands in non-Sulfide systems performed under TP 08-02 and under TP 20-01

The objective of this report is to accept or reject the hypothesis that the experiments conducted under TP 08-02 Revision 0 (Ismail et al., 2008) were affected by CO 2 (g) intrusion and sample contamination. The test of the hypothesis is accomplished by comparing the experimental data collected under the protocols of TP 08-02 Revision O and TP 20-01 Revision O (Kirkes and Zhang, 2020). The protocols of TP 20-01 Revision 0 minimize the possibilities of CO 2 (g) intrusion and sample contamination. The experimental data sets obtained under both TPs will be assessed statistically to see if they are identical or not.

PROACTIVE Focus Area 4: Structured Decision Metrics Analysis (Final Report)

A structured decision metrics analysis was developed as one of the tasks under PROACTIVE’s Focus Area 4 (FA4) and used structured decision metrics for processes, items, and facilities (PIF) to determine the efficacy of an M&V system in meeting treaty goals and technical objectives. The method starts with the functional decomposition of a “treaty” with the M&V system overlaid on it. A Functional Decomposition Rubric (FDR) for each PIF is used to determine a score ranging from 0 (weak) to 4 (strong) for assurance, security, and burden. The individual scores are combined to provide an overall Verification System Score (VSS) which assesses the overall verification system’s suitability given goals; scores for each step of the process are also given. The outcome of the evaluation is to identify needs or modifications to the enterprise model, verification system, or proposed testbed capabilities. VeriScore was used to evaluate FA4’s Spiral 0 exercise; those results are included in this report. The VeriScore and FDR framework can also be used in a non-treaty environment, as any goal/objective/method structure will work, thus expanding its applicability beyond traditional arms control structures.

CWMD Nuclear Forensics Quarterly Report

Analysis and evaluation of nuclear debris is a key component to identify forensic signatures in a post-detonation environment. Currently, methods exist and are practiced in obtaining signatures from post-detonation debris. However, efforts to reduce the timeline in obtaining signatures is continuous within nuclear forensics research and will be forwarded by this research. This education and research project will explore combined material chemistry and separations of radionuclides to provide actionable signatures in less time than standard methods. The research will use the phase distribution of radionuclides in debris to develop targeted and rapid dissolution methods. These dissolution methods will be coupled with microfluidics to achieve samples suitable for analysis within reduced timelines.

Shot 3 Post-Shot Report: Fault Analysis of MK-X Data [Slides]

This presentation constitutes a post-shot report for the MK-X performance on Shot 3 (13 July 2022). It focuses primarily on the analysis of electrical faults which have been a persistent issue in MK-X performance and were a significant focus of the test. The MK-X is a helical flux compression generator (HFCG) that has been manufactured in a novel and very cost-effective way. Shot 3 was the fourth test in a series which began with a low initial-current-level HFCG test coupled to a dummy load (Shot 0) and then a high stress test (Shot 1) coupled to a primitive pulse forming network (PFN). Shot 0 performed close to expectation but Shot 1 had early time losses that could not be explained. As a result, Shots 2 and 3 had dual goals. Each shot looked at MK-X performance relative to the early time losses, and since the amount of current generated on the first two tests was a useful amount, we coupled to a fast R43S Ranchero flux compression generator for Shot 2 to ascertain Ranchero’s performance with higher-than-ever initial current and another PFN load. Then Shot 3 implemented a specific change to the MK-X and coupled to only a low inductance PFN load. The report shows that Shots 1-3 all have qualitatively similar losses and the change made for Shot 3 to explore losses led to even further losses. However, the PFN on shot 3 was low inductance and in spite of the losses, 32 MA was generated. This report discusses the losses seen specifically on Shot 3 and compares the electrical and camera data along with a careful comparison to 3 D MHD modeling.
