Single-Layer Dititanium Oxide Ti 2 O MOene: Multifunctional Promises for Electride, Anode Materials, and Superconductor

Using the first-principles calculations, we report the existence of the single-layer (SL) dititanium oxide Ti 2 O (labeled as MOene) that constructs a novel family of MXene based on transition-metal oxides. This MOene material strongly contrasts the conventional ones consisting of transition-metal carbides and/or nitrides. SL Ti 2 O has high thermal and dynamical stabilities because of the strong Ti–O ionic bonding interactions. Moreover, this material is an intrinsic electride and exhibits extremely low diffusion barriers of ~12.0 and 6.3 meV for Li and Na diffusion, respectively. When applied as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, it possesses a high energy storage capacity (960.23 mAhg –1 ), surpassing the traditional MXenes-based anodes. The superb electrochemical performance stems from the existing anionic electron on Ti 2 O surface. Astonishingly, SL Ti 2 O is also determined to be a superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature (T c ) of ~9.8 K, which originates from the soft-mode of the first acoustic phonon branch and enhanced electron–phonon coupling in the low-frequency region. Furthermore, this soft-mode behaves much softer upon applying a compressive strain of 2%, leading to a higher T c of 11.9 K. Furthermore, our finding broadens the family of MXenes and could facilitate more experimental efforts toward future nanodevices.

Operando study of mechanical integrity of high-volume expansion Li-ion battery anode materials coated by Al 2 O 3

Group IV elements and their oxides, such as Si, Ge, Sn and SiO have much higher theoretical capacity than commercial graphite anode. However, these materials undergo large volume change during cycling, resulting in severe structural degradation and capacity fading. Al 2 O 3 coating is considered an approach to improve the mechanical stability of high-capacity anode materials. To understand the effect of Al 2 O 3 coating directly, we monitored the morphology change of coated/uncoated Sn particles during cycling using operando focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy. Here, the results indicate that the Al 2 O 3 coating provides local protection and reduces crack formation at the early stage of volume expansion. The 3 nm Al 2 O 3 coating layer provides better protection than the 10 and 30 nm coating layer. Nevertheless, the Al 2 O 3 coating is unable to prevent the pulverization at the later stage of cycling because of large volume expansion.

Large Scale Synthesis of Manganese Oxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites as Anode Materials for Long Cycle Lithium Ion Batteries

Manganese oxides have been frequently used as cathodes in primary batteries. Applications of manganese oxides in secondary batteries are limited by low electrical conductivity and rapid capacity fading because of electrode pulverization and aggregation. In this study, a solid-state synthetic strategy is presented that successfully combines nanosize (~ 50 nm) nickel doped α-MnO 2 with reduced graphene oxides as highly stable composite anodes in lithium ion batteries. The synthesis approach is easy to scale up and suitable for industrial applications. Here, the rationally designed Ni-α-MnO 2 /RGO was tested in galvanostatic half coin cells for Li + charge-discharge studies. The results show that this composite maintains a high capacity of 615 mAh g -1 even after 200 cycles at a high current rate of 1 C (830 mA g -1 ), and with a high Coulombic efficiency near 99%. The anodes exhibit excellent rate capability in a wide range of rate testing from 0.2 to 10 C, without showing capacity decay. This superior anode performance is ascribed to the reduced size of α-MnO 2 domains that are well dispersed in an RGO matrix, which affords good ionic/elec. cond., low charge transfer resistance and mitigates issues of vol. expansion of the anodic active materials. This study opens up an avenue for developing the manufacturing of high-performance electrodes for real applications, such as batteries in electrical vehicles.

Mechanics-Driven Anode Material Failure in Battery Safety and Capacity Deterioration Issues: A Review

Abstract High-capacity anodes, such as Si, have attracted tremendous research interest over the last two decades because of the requirement for the high energy density of next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The mechanical integrity and stability of such materials during cycling are critical because their volume considerably changes. The volume changes/deformation result in mechanical stresses, which lead to mechanical failures, including cracks, fragmentation, and debonding. These phenomena accelerate capacity fading during electrochemical cycling and thus limit the application of high-capacity anodes. Experimental studies have been performed to characterize the deformation and failure behavior of these high-capacity materials directly, providing fundamental insights into the degradation processes. Modeling works have focused on elucidating the underlying mechanisms and providing design tools for next-generation battery design. This review presents an overview of the fundamental understanding and theoretical analysis of the electrochemical degradation and safety issues of LIBs where mechanics dominates. We first introduce the stress generation and failure behavior of high-capacity anodes from the experimental and computational aspects, respectively. Then, we summarize and discuss the strategies of stress mitigation and failure suppression. Finally, we conclude the significant points and outlook critical bottlenecks in further developing and spreading high-capacity materials of LIBs.

Spinel high-entropy oxides (FeNiCrMnZnX) 3 O 4 (X = Al, mg) as anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

To address the high cost, cobalt dependency, and resource constraints typical of conventional high-entropy oxide (HEO) anodes, this study reports the successful synthesis of two Co-free, six-component spinel-type HEOs(FeNiCrMnZnAl) 3 O 4 (HEO-Al) and (FeNiCrMnZnMg) 3 O 4 (HEO-Mg), via a sol-gel method. The distinct effects of Al 3+ and Mg 2+ incorporation on the electrochemical performance and lithium storage kinetics were systematically investigated. XRD, Raman, and TEM characterizations confirm that both materials possess a pure spinel phase, uniform particle size, and homogeneous elemental distribution. Notably, electrochemical evaluations reveal that HEO-Al delivers a superior reversible capacity of 480.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , and maintains 354.5 mAh g −1 after 1000 long-term cycles at 1 A g −1 , significantly outperforming HEO-Mg. Kinetic analysis indicates that HEO-Al exhibits lower charge transfer resistance, a higher Li + diffusion coefficient, and a pseudocapacitive contribution of up to 82%. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that Al substitution effectively optimizes the structural stability and lithium storage kinetics of Co-free HEOs, providing a viable strategy for designing low-cost, highly stable HEO anode systems.

Topological Dirac Semimetal Phase in Bismuth Based Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Bismuth has recently attracted interest in connection with Na-ion battery anodes due to its high volumetric capacity. It reacts with Na to form Na 3 Bi which is a prototypical Dirac semimetal with a nontrivial electronic structure. Density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations are playing a key role in understanding the fascinating electronic structure of Na 3 Bi and other topological materials. In particular, the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) meta-generalized-gradient-approximation (meta-GGA) has shown significant improvement over the widely used generalized-gradient-approximation (GGA) scheme in capturing energetic, structural, and electronic properties of many classes of materials. Here, we discuss the electronic structure of Na 3 Bi within the SCAN framework and show that the resulting Fermi velocities and s-band shift around the Γ point are in better agreement with experiments than the corresponding GGA predictions. SCAN yields a purely spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) driven Dirac semimetal state in Na 3 Bi in contrast with the earlier GGA results. Our analysis reveals the presence of a topological phase transition from the Dirac semimetal to a trivial band insulator phase in Na 3 Bi x Sb 1-x alloys as the strength of the SOC varies with Sb content, and gives insight into the role of the SOC in modulating conduction properties of Na 3 Bi.

Phase engineering of layered anode materials during ion-intercalation in Van der Waal heterostructures

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a class of 2D materials demonstrating promising properties, such as high capacities and cycling stabilities, making them strong candidates to replace graphitic anodes in lithium-ion batteries. However, certain TMDs, for instance, MoS 2 , undergo a phase transformation from 2H to 1T during intercalation that can affect the mobility of the intercalating ions, the anode voltage, and the reversible capacity. In contrast, select TMDs, for instance, NbS 2 and VS 2 , resist this type of phase transformation during Li-ion intercalation. This manuscript uses density functional theory simulations to investigate the phase transformation of TMD heterostructures during Li-, Na-, and K-ion intercalation. The simulations suggest that while stacking MoS 2 layers with NbS 2 layers is unable to limit this 2H → 1T transformation in MoS 2 during Li-ion intercalation, the interfaces effectively stabilize the 2H phase of MoS 2 during Na- and K-ion intercalation. However, stacking MoS 2 layers with VS 2 is able to suppress the 2H → 1T transformation of MoS 2 during the intercalation of Li, Na, and K-ions. The creation of TMD heterostructures by stacking MoS 2 with layers of non-transforming TMDs also renders theoretical capacities and electrical conductivities that are higher than that of bulk MoS 2 .

A Novel Spinel High-Entropy Oxide (Cr0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)3O4 as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In this study, we synthesized spinel high-entropy oxide (HEO) (Cr0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)3O4 nanoparticles by a simple solution combustion method. These particles were investigated for their performance as anodes in lithium-ion batteries. The reversible capacity is 132 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA·g−1, 107 mAh·g−1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1, and 96 mAh·g−1 rate capacity at a high current density of 2 A g−1. The outstanding cycle stability under high current densities and remarkable rate performance can be attributed to the stable structure originating from the high entropy of the material.

Improved cycle stability and high-rate capability of LiNbO 3 -coated Li 3 VO 4 as anode material for lithium-ion battery

Lithium vanadate (Li 3 VO 4 ) has garnered considerable attention as an alternative negative electrode material for non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity, energy efficiency, and stable discharge voltage. Nonetheless, the Li 3 VO 4 material displays a low rate capability, attributed mainly to its poor intrinsic electronic conductivity. Here, in this study, we report the synthesis of lithium niobate LiNbO 3 -coated Li 3 VO 4 (LVO@LNO) using a one-pot sol-gel method. The resulting LVO@LNO demonstrates a high reversible capacity of approximately 530 mAh/g, which is more than double that of free Li 3 VO 4 . To explore the effect of the LNO coating process on the morphological and structural properties, Raman, XRD, operando XRD, XPS, SEM and HTEM analyses were conducted. To explain the enhancement of electronic conductivity in our modified material after a LiNbO 3 coating, we conducted an Ex-Situ electrochemical impedance (EIS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational study. Additionally, we designed a full cell utilizing a 1 wt% LNO-coated LVO anode and NMC-811 cathode. The cell yielded an output voltage of approximately 2.8 V with a high initial specific capacity of 350 mAh/g versus to the anode, at 1C with a capacity retention of 85 % after 100 cycles.

Establishing substitution rules of functional groups for high-capacity organic anode materials in Na-ion batteries

Tailoring molecular structures of organic electrode materials (OEMs) can enhance their performance in Na-ion batteries, however, the substitution rules and the consequent effect on the specific capacity and working potential remain elusive. Herein, by examining three sodium carboxylates with selective N substitution or extended conjugation structure, we exploited the correlation between structure and performance to establish substitution rules for high-capacity OEMs. Our results show that substitution position and types of functional groups are essential to create active centers for uptake/removal of Na+ and thermodynamically stabilize organic structures. Furthermore, rational host design and electrolytes modulation were performed to extend the cycle life to 500 cycles. A full cell based on the optimal 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid disodium salt anode and the polyaniline cathode is demonstrated to confirm the feasibility of achieving all-organic batteries. Lastly, this work provides a valuable guideline for the design principle of high-capacity and stable OEMs for sustainable energy storage.
