Integration of Rucio in Belle II

The Belle II experiment, which started taking physics data in April 2019, will multiply the volume of data currently stored on its nearly 30 storage elements worldwide by one order of magnitude to reach about 340 PB of data (raw and Monte Carlo simulation data) by the end of operations. To tackle this massive increase and to manage the data even after the end of the data taking, it was decided to move the Distributed Data Management software from a homegrown piece of software to a widely used Data Management solution in HEP and beyond : Rucio. This contribution describes the work done to integrate Rucio with Belle II distributed computing infrastructure as well as the migration strategy that was successfully performed to ensure a smooth transition.

The imaging Time-of-Propagation detector at Belle II

Here, we report on the construction, operation, and performance of the Time-of-Propagation detector with imaging used for the Belle II experiment running at the Super-KEKB e + e - collider. This detector is located in the central barrel region and uses Cherenkov light to provide particle identification among hadrons. The Cherenkov light is radiated in highly polished bars of synthetic fused silica (quartz) and transported to the ends of the bars via total internal reflection. One bar end is instrumented with finely segmented micro-channel-plate photomultiplier tubes to record the light, while the other end has a mirror attached to reflect the photons back to the instrumented end. Both the propagation times and hit positions of the Cherenkov photons are measured; these depend on the Cherenkov angle and together provide good discrimination among charged pions, kaons, and protons with momenta up to around 4 GeV/ c . To date, the detector has been used to record and analyze almost 600 fb −1 of Belle II data.

Novel experimental probes of QCD in SIDIS and e + e - annihilation (Final Technical Report)

The research addressed with this award seeks to advance our understanding of the structure and dynamics underlying the properties of visible matter. In our current understanding the nucleons (protons and neutrons) are not fundamental but are comprised of quarks and gluons, which are collectively called partons. A static quark picture fails to explain the properties of the nucleons, such as their mass and intrinsic spin, which are thought to emerge dynamically from the quark-gluon interactions via the strong force. In this work, novel observables employing correlations of particles produced in the scattering of high energy electrons off protons at the CLAS12 experiment at Jefferson Lab were analyzed to probe quark-gluon interactions. The ultimate goal of this line of inquiry is to be able to describe the properties of protons and neutrons from first principles, similar to how studying the hydrogen atom has led to the formulation of the theory of Quantum Electrodynamics. Because quarks cannot be observed directly but only as part of more complex composite particles, a smaller, complimentary part of this work was the analysis of particle production in electron-positron annihilation at the Belle II experiment to understand the production of particles from initial quarks. This takes advantage of the fact that in e + e - annihilation the initial quark dynamics is known, unlike in the scattering of nucleons. Several new applications using Machine Learning algorithms for event tagging and reconstruction to support this program were developed as part of this award. In addition, we had a significant role in the development of the physics program for the future Electron-Ion Collider, which is a new collider to be build in the US within the next decade.

Measurement of the D → K - π + π + π- and D → K - π + π 0 coherence factors and average strong-phase differences in quantum-correlated $ D\overline{D} $ decays

The decays D → K - π + π + π - and D → K - π + π 0 are studied in a sample of quantum-correlated \( D\overline{D} \) pairs produced through the process e + e - → ψ (3770) → \( D\overline{D} \) , exploiting a data set collected by the BESIII experiment that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb - 1 . Here D indicates a quantum superposition of a D 0 and a \( {\overline{D}}^0 \) meson. By reconstructing one neutral charm meson in a signal decay, and the other in the same or a different final state, observables are measured that contain information on the coherence factors and average strong-phase differences of each of the signal modes. These parameters are critical inputs in the measurement of the angle γ of the Unitarity Triangle in B - → DK - decays at the LHCb and Belle II experiments. The coherence factors are determined to be R K 3 π = \( {0.52}_{-0.10}^{+0.12} \) and \( {R}_{K{\pi \pi}^0} \) = 0 . 78 ± 0 . 04, with values for the average strong-phase differences that are \( {\delta}_D^{K3\pi }=\left({167}_{-19}^{+31}\right){}^{\circ} \) and \( {\delta}_D^{K{\pi \pi}^0}=\left({196}_{-15}^{+14}\right){}^{\circ} \) , where the uncertainties include both statistical and systematic contributions. The analysis is re-performed in four bins of the phase-space of the D → K - π + π + π - to yield results that will allow for a more sensitive measurement of γ with this mode, to which the BESIII inputs will contribute an uncertainty of around 6°.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ – → μ – μ + μ – decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decay τ – → μ – μ + μ – using a 424 fb –1 sample of data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e – collider. The selection of e + e – → τ + τ – events is based on an inclusive reconstruction of the non-signal tau decay, and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. We observe one signal candidate, which is compatible with the expectation from background processes. We set a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.9 × 10 –8 on the branching fraction of the τ – → μ – μ + μ – decay, which is the most stringent bound to date.

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays τ − → e ∓ ℓ ± ℓ − , where ℓ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 428 fb −1 recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider. The selection of e + e − → τ + τ − events containing a signal candidate is based on an inclusive-tagging reconstruction and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. Upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.3 and 2.5 × 10 −8 are set at the 90% confidence level. These results are the most stringent bounds to date for four of the modes.

Calibrated particle identification for Belle II

We present several efforts aimed at improving charged particle identification at the Belle II experiment. We define an ablation test to quantify and evaluate the impact of each sub-detector on the global particle identification performance. We demonstrate that the performance of the identification scheme can be improved via a simple calibration of the sub-detector likelihoods through a set of per hypothesis, per sub-detector weights. Finally, we present preliminary results on an improved definition of the likelihoods contributed by the electromagnetic calorimeter. A set of multiclass boosted decision trees is trained to exploit the shape of energy depositions of different particle species. In simulated $B\bar{B}$ events, the pion-to-electron and muon fake rates are reduced by 55% and 31% respectively at low-medium momentum.

Performance evaluation of an RFSoC operating in a 1.25 Tesla magnetic field

Here, the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider is preparing for an upgrade after 2027–2028 to handle higher luminosity and increased background rates. A Radio Frequency System-on-Chip (RFSoC) has been identified as a potential candidate for a common front-end upgrade for subsystems requiring high-speed waveform digitization. The RFSoC's ADC and DAC channels were tested across various magnetic field strengths and a few different field orientations. Power consumption and boot memory functionality were also assessed. Results indicate stable operation with negligible performance degradation, suggesting the RFSoC's viability for high-speed digitization tasks in high magnetic field environments.

We measure the 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 + → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 0 decays reconstructed in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collisions at the Belle II experiment using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 428 fb −1 . A control sample of 𝐷 + → 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾$^0_𝑆$ decays is used to correct for detection and production asymmetries. Model-independent measurement of 𝐷 0 −$\overline{D}$ 0 mixing parameters in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − decays at Belle and Belle II

We perform a model-independent measurement of the 𝐷 0 −$\overline{D}$ 0 mixing parameters using samples of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − -collision data collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments that have integrated luminosities of 951 fb −1 and 408 fb −1 , respectively. Approximately 2.05 × 10 6 neutral 𝐷 mesons are reconstructed in the 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − channel, with the neutral 𝐷 flavor tagged by the charge of the pion in the 𝐷* + → 𝐷 0⁢ 𝜋 + decay. Assuming charge-parity symmetry, the mixing parameters are measured to be 𝑥 = (4.0 ±1.7 ±0.4) × 10 −3 and 𝑦 = (2.9 ±1.4 ±0.3) × 10 −3 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with previous determinations.

Measurement of the B 0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using hadronic decays reconstructed in 2019–2021 Belle II data

We measure the B0 lifetime and flavor-oscillation frequency using B 0 → D(*) – π + decays collected by the Belle II experiment in asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e – collisions produced by the SuperKEKB collider operating at the Υ⁡(4⁢S) resonance. We fit the decay-time distribution of signal decays, where the initial flavor is determined by identifying the flavor of the other B meson in the event. The results, based on 33000 signal decays reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to 190 fb –1 , are τ B 0 = (1.499 ± 0.013 ± 0.008) ps, Δ⁢m d = (0.516 ± 0.008 ± 0.005) ps –1 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world-average values.

Search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at s = 10.745 GeV

We search for the e + e − → η b ( 1 S ) ω and e + e − → χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω processes at a center-of-mass energy of 10.745 GeV, which is close to the peak of the ϒ ( 10753 ) state. We use data collected by the Belle II experiment during a special run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.8 fb − 1 . We reconstruct ω → π + π − π 0 decays and use the ω meson’s recoil mass to search for the signals. We do not find evidence for either process, and set upper limits on the corresponding Born-level cross sections of 2.5 pb and 7.8 pb, respectively, at the 90% confidence level. The χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ω limit is the result of a combination of this analysis and a previous search using full reconstruction. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for a μ + μ − resonance in four-muon final states at Belle II

We report on a search for a resonance X decaying to a pair of muons in e + e − → μ + μ − X events in the 0.212 – 9.000 GeV / c 2 mass range, using 178 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of X beyond the standard model: a Z ′ vector boson in the L μ − L τ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV / c 2 , the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 and 428 fb − 1 , respectively. Search for an Invisible Z ' in a Final State with Two Muons and Missing Energy at Belle II

The $L_μ – L_τ$ extension of the standard model predicts the existence of a lepton-flavor-universality-violating Z' boson that couples only to the heavier lepton families. We search for such a Z' through its invisible decay in the process $e^+e^– → μ^+μ^–$Z'. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions at a center- of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019-2020, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.7 fb –1 . We find no excess over the expected standard-model background. We set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the cross section for this process as well as on the coupling of the model, which ranges from 3 × 10 –3 at low Z' masses to 1 at Z' masses of 8 GeV=$c^2$.
