An Investigation of Applications for Thermodynamic Work Potential Methods: Working Tables and Charts for Estimation of Thermodynamic Work Potential in Equilibrium Mixtures of Jet-A and Air

The objective of this report is to provide a tool to facilitate the application of thermodynamic work potential methods to aircraft and engine analysis. This starts with a discussion of the theoretical background underlying these methods, which is then used to derive various equations useful for thermodynamic analysis of aircraft engines. The work potential analysis method is implemented in the form of a set of working charts and tables that can be used to graphically evaluate work potential stored in high-enthalpy gas. The range of validity for these tables is 300 to 36,000 R, pressures between between 0.01 atm and 100 atm, and fuel-air ratios from zero to stoichiometric. The derivations and charts assume mixtures of Jet-A and air as the working fluid. The thermodynamic properties presented in these charts were calculated based upon standard thermodynamic curve fits.

Monitoring of International Space Station Telemetry Using Shewhart Control Charts

Shewhart control charts have been established as an expedient method for analyzing dynamic, trending data in order to identify anomalous subsystem performance as soon as such performance would exceed a statistically established baseline. Additionally, this leading indicator tool integrates a selection methodology that reduces false positive indications, optimizes true leading indicator events, minimizes computer processor unit duty cycles, and addresses human factor concerns (i.e., the potential for flight-controller data overload). This innovation leverages statistical process control, and provides a relatively simple way to allow flight controllers to focus their attention on subtle system changes that could lead to dramatic off-nominal system performance. Finally, this capability improves response time to potential hardware damage and/or crew injury, thereby improving space flight safety. Shewhart control charts require normalized data. However, the telemetry from the ISS Early External Thermal Control System (EETCS) was not normally distributed. A method for normalizing the data was implemented, as was a means of selecting data windows, the number of standard deviations (Sigma Level), the number of consecutive points out of limits (Sequence), and direction (increasing or decreasing trend data). By varying these options, and treating them like dial settings, the number of nuisance alerts and leading indicators were optimized. The goal was to capture all leading indicators while minimizing the number of nuisances. Lean Six Sigma (L6S) design of experiment methodologies were employed. To optimize the results, Perl programming language was used to automate the massive amounts of telemetry data, control chart plots, and the data analysis.

Performance Charts for the Turbojet Engine

Charts are presented for computing the thrust, fuel consumption, and other performance values of a turbojet engine for any given set of operating conditions and component efficiencies. The effects of the pressure losses in the inlet duct and combustion chamber, the variation in the physical properties of the gas as it passes through the cycle, and the change in mass flow by the addition of fuel are included. The principle performance charts show the effects of the primary variables and correction charts provide the effects of the secondary variables.

Charts Showing Relations Among Primary Aerodynamic Variables for Helicopter-performance Estimation

In order to facilitate solutions of the general problem of helicopter selection, the aerodynamic performance of rotors is presented in the form of charts showing relations between primary design and performance variables. By the use of conventional helicopter theory, certain variables are plotted and other variables are considered fixed. Charts constructed in such a manner show typical results, trends, and limits of helicopter performance. Performance conditions considered include hovering, horizontal flight, climb, and ceiling. Special problems discussed include vertical climb and the use of rotor-speed-reduction gears for hovering.

Charts designate probable future oceanographic research fields

Charts outline the questions and problems of oceanographic research in the future. NASA uses the charts to estimate the probable requirements for instrumentation carried by satellites engaged in cooperative programs with other agencies concerned with identification, analysis, and solution of many of these problems.

Tool for reading psychrometric charts

Three-legged, clear plastic tool is designed so that the angles of each leg correspond with the angles of psychometric chart construction for each of the three required scales. The appropriate edges are tapered to the chart surface.

Charts for predicting turbulent skin friction from the Van Driest method (2)

Charts are presented for rapidly estimating local or average turbulent skin friction on flat plates from Reynolds numbers, based on either length or momentum thickness. These charts facilitate the conversion from one Reynolds number to the other. Ranges of variables covered are: Mach number, 0 to 10; length Reynolds number, 10 to the 5th to 10 to the 9th power; and wall-to-adiabatic-wall temperature ratio, 0.2 to 1.0.

A chart of cosmic ray isotopes

A chart has been prepared that lists some of the properties relevant to cosmic ray studies of all the significant nuclides between lithium and nickel. On this chart there are shown all the possible decays that might be of interest in the unique conditions experienced by cosmic ray nuclei, various abundance figures and the probable nucleosynthesis processes of origin.

Observations of winter polynyas and fractures using NOAA AVHRR TIR images and Nimbus-7 SMMR sea ice concentration charts

The validity of the daily sea ice concentration charts obtained from Nimbus-7 SMMR data is tested against thermal IR NOAA AVHRR-4 images with a 1.1 x 1.1 km resolution. Polynyas and fractures recorded in both data sets are compared for the same times over the same areas. Although the coarser resolution of SMMR data leads to a loss of detail, it is found that the ice concentration charts provide valuable data on openings in the ice. The SMMR data on the location, orientation, and size of polynyas and fractures are shown to be in good agreement with the AVHRR data. Also, the results suggest that the location and orientation of plynyas and fractures are related to the direction of surface winds.
