Differential absorption of circularly polarized light by a centrosymmetric crystal

Crystalline solids are governed by universal structure-property relationships derived from their crystal symmetry, leading to paradigmatic rules on what properties they can and cannot exhibit. A long-held structure-property relationship is that centrosymmetric crystals cannot differentially absorb circularly polarized light. In this study, we demonstrate the design, synthesis, and characterization of the centrosymmetric material Li 2 Co 3 (SeO 3 ) 4 , which violates this relationship not by defying symmetry-imposed selection rules but by invoking a photophysical process not previously characterized for crystalline solids. This process originates from an interference between linear dichroism and linear birefringence, referred to as LD-LB, and involves strong chiroptical signals that invert upon sample flipping. Here, in addition to enabling a chiroptical response under centrosymmetry, this process opens up photonic engineering opportunities based on crystalline solids.

Turn‐on Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Chiral Indium Chlorides by 5s 2 Metal Centers

Abstract Introducing chirality into the metal‐halide hybrids has enabled many emerging properties including chiroptical activity, spin‐dependent transport, and ferroelectricity. However, most of the chiral metal‐halide hybrids to date are non‐emissive, and the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, we show a new strategy to turn on the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in chiral metal‐halide hybrids. We demonstrate that alloying Sb 3+ into chiral indium‐chloride hybrids dramatically increases the photoluminescence quantum yield in two new series of chiral indium‐antimony chlorides. These materials exhibit strong CPL signals with tunable energy and a high dissymmetry factor up to 1.5×10 −2 . Mechanistic studies reveal that the emission originates from the self‐trapped excitons centered in 5s 2 Sb 3+ . Moreover, near‐ultraviolet pumped white light is demonstrated with a polarization up to 6.0 %. Our work demonstrates new strategies towards highly luminescent chiral metal‐halide hybrids.

Aggregation-Induced Emission and Circularly Polarized Luminescence Duality in Tetracationic Binaphthyl-Based Cyclophanes

Here, we report an approach to the synthesis of highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes by the insertion of axially chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl fluorophores into the constitutions of pyridinium-based macrocycles. Remarkably, these fluorescent tetracationic cyclophanes exhibit a significant AIE compared to their neutral optically active binaphthyl precursors. A combination of theoretical calculations and time-resolved spectroscopy reveal that the AIE originates from limited torsional vibrations associated with the axes of chirality present in the chiral enantiomeric binaphthyl units and the fine-tuning of their electronic landscape when incorporated within the cyclophane structure. Furthermore, these highly charged enantiopure cyclophanes display CPL responses both in solution and in the aggregated state. This unique duality of AIE and CPL in these tetracationic cyclophanes is destined to be of major importance in future development of photonic devices and bio-applications.

Chiral Four-Wave Mixing Signals with Circularly Polarized X-ray Pulses

Chiral four-wave mixing signals are calculated using the irreducible tensor formalism. Different polarization and crossing angle configurations allow to single out the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole interactions. Other configurations can reveal that the chiral interaction occurs at a given step within the nonlinear interaction pathways. Applications are made to the study of valence excitations of S-ibuprofen by chiral stimulated X-ray Raman signals at the carbon K-edge and by chiral visible 2D electronic spectroscopy.
