General Approach to Solving Spin Moiré Superstructures

Recently, a host of exciting magnetic textures such as topologically protected skyrmion lattices has been discovered in several bulk metallic lanthanide compounds. In addition to hosting skyrmion phases, a hallmark of this class of materials is the appearance of numerous spin textures characterized by superposition of multiple magnetic modulations: spin moiré superlattices. In order to understand the multitude of complex phases often present in these materials, we require a general-purpose experimental and theoretical framework. Here, we demonstrate such an approach in EuAg4⁢Sb2 by comprehensively characterizing and modeling its three complex zero-field magnetic textures. Systematic symmetry-breaking experiments using uniaxial strain determine that the ground-state incommensurate magnetic phase (ICM1) is single 𝑞, meaning the magnetic moments modulate along one magnetic propagation vector. In contrast, ICM2 and ICM3 are both double 𝑞, meaning they are formed from the superposition of two sinusoidal spin modulations, i.e., spin moiré superlattices. Further, through application of polarized small-angle neutron scattering and spherical neutron polarimetry, we demonstrate that ICM1 is a single-𝑞 cycloid and ICM2 and ICM3 are double-𝑞 vortex lattices. Despite the quasi-two-dimensional nature of EuAg4⁢Sb2, the modulations propagate out of the ab plane, leading to a shift of the spin texture between triangular lattice planes. Further, the ICM3 to ICM2 transition includes an unusual 45° rotation of the magnetic vortex lattice. Motivated by the coexistence of such drastically different phases in this compound, we conclude by developing a phenomenological model that sheds light on the energetic origins of these varied phases. Our experimental probes and theoretical modeling definitively characterize three different and tunable phases in one material and provide insight for the design of topological spin-texture materials.

Topological spin texture in Janus monolayers of the chromium trihalides Cr(I, X ) 3

Topological magnetic states are promising for ultradense memory and logic devices. Recent progress in two-dimensional magnets encourages the idea to realize topological states, such as skyrmions and merons, in freestanding monolayers. However, monolayers such as CrI 3 lack Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs) and thus do not naturally exhibit skyrmions/merons but rather a ferromagnetic state. Here we propose the fabrication of Cr(I, $X)_3$ Janus monolayers, in which the Cr atoms are covalently bonded to the underlying I ions and top-layer Br or Cl atoms. By performing first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we identify strong enough DMIs, which leads to not only helical cycloid phases, but also to topologically nontrivial states, such as the intrinsic domain wall skyrmions in Cr(I, Br) 3 and the magnetic-field-induced bimerons in Cr(I, Cl) 3 . Finally, microscopic origins of such spin textures are revealed as well.

Complex magnetic order in the decorated spin-chain system Rb 2 Mn 3 ( MoO 4 ) 3 ( OH ) 2

The macroscopic magnetic properties and microscopic magnetic structure of Rb 2 Mn 3 (MoO 4 ) 3 (OH) 2 (space group Pn ma) are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The compound's crystal structure contains bond-alternating [Mn 3 O 11 ] ∞ chains along the b axis, formed by isosceles triangles of Mn ions occupying two crystallographically nonequivalent sites (the Mn1 site on the base and Mn2 site on the vertex). These chains are only weakly linked to each other by nonmagnetic oxyanions. Both superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and neutron diffraction experiments show two successive magnetic transitions as a function of temperature. On cooling, it transitions from a paramagnetic phase into an incommensurate phase below 4.5 K with a magnetic wave vector near k 1 = ( 0 , 0.46 , 0 ). An additional commensurate antiferromagnetically ordered component arises with k 2 = ( 0, 0, 0), forming a complex magnetic structure below 3.5 K with two different propagation vectors of different stars. On further cooling, the incommensurate wave vector undergoes a lock-in transition below 2.3 K. The experimental results suggest that the magnetic superspace group is Pnma. 1' (0b0) s0ss for the single- k incommensurate phase and is Pn' m a ( 0 b 0 ) 00 s for the two- k magnetic phase. We propose a simplified magnetic structure model taking into account the major ordered contributions, where the commensurate k 2 defines the ordering of the c-axis component of the Mn1 magnetic moment, while the incommensurate k 1 describes the ordering of the ab -plane components of both Mn1 and Mn2 moments into elliptical cycloids.

Magnetic excitations of the hybrid multiferroic (ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·D 2 O

We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the hybrid molecule-based multiferroic compound ( ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 · D 2 O in the zero-field incommensurate cycloidal phase and the high-field quasicollinear phase. The spontaneous electric polarization changes its direction concurrently with the field-induced magnetic transition, from mostly aligned with the crystallographic a axis to the c axis. To account for such a change in polarization direction, the underlying multiferroic mechanism was proposed to switch from the spin-current model induced via the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the p - d hybridization model. We perform a detailed analysis of the inelastic neutron data of ( ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 · D 2 O using linear spin-wave theory to quantify magnetic interaction strengths and investigate the possible impact of different multiferroic mechanisms on the magnetic couplings. Overall our result reveals that the spin dynamics of both multiferroic phases can be well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with easy-plane anisotropy. We do not find notable differences between the optimal model parameters of the two phases. The hierarchy of exchange couplings and the balance among frustrated interactions remain the same between two phases, suggesting that magnetic interactions in ( ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 · D 2 O are much more robust than the electric polarization in response to delicate reorganizations of the electronic degrees of freedom in an applied magnetic field.

Phase transitions of the ferroelectric (ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·D 2 O under magnetic field

Due to the strong coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity, (ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·D 2 O exhibits several intriguing magnetic and electric phases. In this Letter, we include higher-order onsite anisotropic spin interactions to explain the ferroelectric phase transitions of (ND 4 ) 2 FeCl 5 ·D 2 O in a magnetic field and to produce the large weights of high-order harmonic components in the cycloid structure that are observed from neutron diffraction experiments. Moreover, we predict a new ferroelectric phase sandwiched between the FE II and FE III phases in a magnetic field. Furthermore, by emphasizing the importance of the higher-order spin anisotropic interactions, our work provides a framework to understand multiferroic materials with rich phase diagrams.

Origin of circular dichroism in resonant elastic x-ray scattering from magnetic and polar chiral structures

Circular dichroism in resonant elastic x-ray scattering (CD-REXS) has recently been observed in chiral structures composed of multiferroic materials as well as magnetic moments or electric polarization vectors. In order to comprehensively understand the experimental results of these previous studies, we present here in detail the analytical formulation of CD-REXS for one-dimensional helices composed of magnetic moments and electric polarization vectors, respectively. In particular, by comparing CD-REXS for a proper-screw-shaped Bloch-type helix and cycloid-shaped Néel-type helix, we found that CD-REXS for both magnetic and polar helices can discriminate between both types of helices. We also found that the x-ray polarization factor depending on the scattering geometry is a significant factor in determining the characteristics of CD-REXS for chiral structures. The results obtained from the detailed formulas can be intuitively understood using the concept of mirror reflection. In particular, in this way it can be understood that Bloch- and Néel-type helices correspond to truly chiral and achiral structures, respectively, and why CD-REXS is able to distinguish between these two types of helices.

Interwoven atypical quantum states in CeLiBi 2

Here we report the discovery of CeLiBi 2 , the first example of a material in the tetragonal CeTX 2 ( T = transition metal; X = pnictogen) family wherein an alkali cation replaces the typical transition metal. Magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction measurements are consistent with a crystal-field Γ 6 ground-state Kramers doublet that orders antiferromagnetically below T N = 3.4 K with an incommensurate propagation wave vector k = ( 0, 0.0724(4), 0.5) that generates a nanometric modulation of the magnetic structure. The best model of the ordered state is an elliptical cycloid with Ce moments primarily residing in the ab plane. This is highly unusual, as all other Γ 6 CeTX 2 members order ferromagnetically. Further, we observe an atypical hard-axis metamagnetic transition at 2 T in magnetostriction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. CeLiBi 2 is a rare example of a highly conductive material with dominant skew scattering leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. Quantum oscillations with five frequencies arise in magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data to T = 30 K and μ 0 H = 55 T, which indicate small Fermi pockets of light carriers with effective masses as low as 0.07 m e . Density functional theory calculations indicate that square-net Dirac-like Bi-p bands are responsible for these ultralight carriers. Together, our results show that CeLiBi 2 enables multiple atypical magnetic and electronic properties in a single clean material.

Multiple incommensurate magnetic states in the kagome antiferromagnet Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8

The kagome lattice can host exotic magnetic phases arising from frustrated and competing magnetic interactions. However, relatively few insulating kagome materials exhibit incommensurate magnetic ordering. Here, we present a study of the magnetic structures and interactions of antiferromagnetic Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 with an undistorted Mn 2+ kagome network. Using neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic measurements, we show that Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 hosts two different incommensurate magnetic states, which develop at T N1 = 1.6 K and T N2 = 0.6 K. Magnetic Rietveld refinements indicate magnetic propagation vectors of the form q=(q x , q y , $\frac{3}{2}$), and our neutron-diffraction data can be well described by cycloidal magnetic structures. By optimizing exchange parameters against magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we show that the spin Hamiltonian contains ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic third-neighbor Heisenberg interactions, with a significant contribution from long-ranged dipolar coupling. This experimentally determined interaction model is compared with density-functional-theory simulations. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that these competing interactions explain the experimental observation of multiple incommensurate magnetic phases and may stabilize multi-q states. Here, our results expand the known range of magnetic behavior on the kagome lattice.

Structural distortion and incommensurate noncollinear magnetism in EuAg 4 As 2

Layered pnictide materials have provided a fruitful platform to study various emergent phenomena, including superconductivity, magnetism, charge density waves, etc. In this work, we report the observation of structural distortion and noncollinear magnetism in layered pnictide EuAg 4 As 2 via transport, magnetization, single crystal x-ray, and neutron diffraction data.EuAg 4 As 2 single crystal shows a structural distortion at 120 K, where two sets of superlattice peaks with the propagation vectors of q 1 =±(0, 0.25, 0.5) and q 2 =±(0.25, 0, 1) emerge. Between 9–15 K, the hexagonal Eu 2+ sublattice enters an unpinned incommensurate magnetic state, with magnetic Bragg reflections pictured as circular sectors. Furthermore, below 9 K, it orders in an incommensurate noncollinear antiferromagnetic state with a well-defined propagation wavevector of (0, 0.1, 0.12) and a very rare magnetic structure, which is helical along the c axis and cycloidal along the b axis with a moment of 6.4 μB/Eu 2+ . Furthermore, rich magnetic phases under magnetic fields, large magnetoresistance, and strong coupling between charge carriers and magnetism in EuAg 4 As 2 are revealed.

Incommensurate magnetic orders and topological Hall effect in the square-net centrosymmetric EuGa 2 Al 2 system

Neutron diffraction on the centrosymmetric square-net magnet EuGa 2 Al 2 reveals multiple incommensurate magnetic states (AFM1, 2, 3) in zero field. In applied field, a new magnetic phase (A) is identified from magnetization and transport measurements, bounded by two of the μ 0 H=0 incommensurate magnetic phases (AFM1, helical, and AFM3, cycloidal) with different moment orientations. Moreover, magnetotransport measurements indicate the presence of a topological Hall effect, with maximum values centered in the A phase. Together, these results render EuGa 2 Al 2 a material with noncoplanar or topological spin texture in applied field. X-ray diffraction reveals an out-of-plane (OOP) charge density wave (CDW) below T CDW ~50 K while the magnetic propagation vector lies in plane below T N =19.5 K. Together these data point to a new route to realizing in-plane noncollinear spin textures through an OOP CDW. In turn, these noncollinear spin textures may be unstable against the formation of topological spin textures in an applied field.

Competing magnetic phases in Li-Fe-Ge kagome systems

Competing interlayer magnetic interactions in kagome magnets can lead to diverse magnetic phases, which enable promising topological or quantum material properties. In this work, the electronic structure and magnetic properties are studied using first-principles calculations for the Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e6, Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e4, and Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e5 compounds sharing the kagome F⁡e3⁢Ge layer motif but with different interlayer arrangements. For Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e4 and Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e5, the predicted magnetic ground states are collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) states involving a mix of ferromagnetic (FM) and AFM interlayer orientations. In contrast, for Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e6, an incommensurate cycloidal spin spiral ground state is stabilized, although its energy is close to a collinear A-type AFM state. The analysis of magnetic RKKY exchange coupling confirms the results of calculations. The values of atomic magnetic moments are in good agreement with existing experimental estimations. Our experiments on Li⁢Fe6⁢G⁡e6 single crystals reveals AFM ordering at ∼540 K and transition to another magnetic phase with a small FM component, possibly with spin canting, below ∼270 K.

Effects of Radiation Reaction Physics on High-Current Power Flow

In this study, we examine the effects of the radiation reaction force on electrons in a radial magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) near a load with peak currents of 60+ MA. More specifically, we study the differences in electron motion and kinetic energy with or without radiation reaction physics using a novel guiding center drift approach that incorporates E $\times$ B and ∇B drifts. A key finding of this study is that an electron's magnetic moment, which would be conserved when radiation reaction physics is not incorporated, can be significantly reduced in magnetic fields on the order of 10,000's T when radiation reaction is included. The reduction of magnetic moment gives rise to a significant reduction in cycloidal kinetic energy as well as a reduction in the electron's ∇B drift.

Topological spin/structure couplings in layered chiral magnet Cr 1/3 TaS 2 : The discovery of spiral magnetic superstructure

Significance Magnets in which chirality of crystal lattice gives rise to noncollinear spin orders are ideal playgrounds for studies of novel physical phenomena originating from the nontrivial topology of magnetic textures. Most studies have been focused on homochiral materials, while topological magnetic states of heterochiral magnets have rarely been explored. Here, we report a layered chiral helimagnet with highly tunable topological heterochiral states. Tuning the chiral domain density, we have observed a topological magnetic texture that has the form of a spiral unfolding in the radial direction. In weak in-plane fields, this spiral magnetic superstructure transforms into a nonspiral array of concentric rings. Our results open a horizon for studies of tunable topological magnetic textures.
